Well, thanks to this thread I am relieved that Merrill didn't just ignore what happened on Sundermount. Although I did not hear her grief beforehand as well. Maybe the glitch is glitched.
What annoyed me though, was that Varric said Isabella stayed with me when I actually romanced Merrill.

Hopefully BioWare will fix the romance bug and especially the Merrill glitch. It's probably the best quest in the game and it is messed up because you either hear Merrill grief too early or not at all. :(

Nobody threatens me or people under my command so naturally I pressed the "Kiss my ass" button and had to kill all the Dalish on my first playthrough.

So I have to kill Merril's clan for a successful romance? Can't I just "take responsibility" for it? I have her Friendship maxed out.

No, you don't have to kill the clan. Once you maxed out her Friendship, it doesn't change. You can accept responsibility (aka blame Merrill because the Dalish hunters harrassing her are bigoted, narrow-minded morons) and it won't impact the romance.

Ah ok. I might just go with that as I have no other biz there and I never cared for the dalish merchandise. Part of the reason is this:

During the scene right after the Keeper's death, there's that moment where you can either blame Merril, or say it was Marethari's fault. First time through I accidentally blame Merril and it led to more experience (possibly because the convo was a little longer after that). I got over 2k. Then the second time I played through, I blamed Marethari and the convo was shorter. I only got 1800 exp.

I'll probably go back and blame Merril again since the friendship won't change on me. More experience that way. I need it to fight the damn High Dragon. :P

I avoided confict with the elves and left peacefully at the end of Merrill's quest. But when I came back to Sundermount later for A Murder of Crows, there was Variel with the quest arrows above her head. Yet before I could talk to her, the rest of the clan turned hostile and we had to kill them all anyway. When the smoke cleared, Variel was nowhere to be found and I got the "quest finished" message. Never did get to the cave.

Seems like the team rushed on Act 3 to finish the game.
