I think we have all been noticing how difficult the game is with knock back and casting spells and/or even melee as a DW rogue or even Archer rogue. That said, I am not complaining and I think the challenge is great. I hope we can tunr this into a productive discussion about this issue in the game. Obviously this is far less applicable to warriors.

Solutions to Knock Back:

Rogues

-the best solution for rogues lies in avoidance and threat reduction, particularly for DW rogues who have to get in close; for this reason I heavily advocate investing in Shadow before Assassin and getting decoy as soon as possible; Shadow also has great synergy with Subterfuge and it might be worth it to upgrade stealth on that tree. That said, there might be other solutions; the Sabotage tree can take enemies out of commission and get them off your back but I think Shadow and Subterfuge are better for this. Scroundrel is also an option but I would advice putting that on Varric; your DW rogues does not have enough points to invest in everything.Archers might be less concerned since they do not need to get in close and will have less exposure. BUT I think it should clear to everyone that you CANNOT tank as a rogue.

-the most effective strategy I found was the liberal use of stealth abilities and twin fang and/or Shadow rear criticals; you want to be popping in and out and making heavy use of decoy; Elites should be dropped one by one whilst your tank soaks up aggro. Threat reduction goes hand in hand with this and Shadow is great for this.

Let us say then that you can reach level 25 (haven't gotten past Act I so don't really know) and you can receive a total of 4 bonus talent points via potions and tomes; that's 29 points to invest in over the game. Below I list what I consider essential talents to deal with knock back and make the DW shine. In no particular order:

Shadow

Posted Image Pinpoint Precision

Posted Image Inconspicuous

Posted Image Disorienting Criticals

Posted Image Predator

Posted Image Decoy (very important!)

Posted Image Shadow Veil

Subterfuge

Posted Image Stealth (bread and butter)

Posted Image
Silent Running

Posted Image
Camouflage

Posted Image Lingering Shroud

Posted Image Subtlety

Specialist

Posted Image Precision (not the best imo but required for synergistc upgrades)

Posted Image Speed (bread and butter as are both upgrades to it)

Posted Image
Lightning Speed

Posted Image
Energizing Speed (very, very important: this provides a 90% cool down on ALL rogues talents, including of couse your Shadow and Subterfuge ones)

Posted Image Power (required but not the best)

Posted Image Harmony

Dual Wield

Posted Image Backstab (not terribly effective but required for other talents)

Posted Image Unforgiving Chain

Posted Image Explosive Strike

Posted Image
Merciless Strike (Stagger CCC)

Posted Image Twin Fangs

Posted Image
Reversed Grip

Assassin

Posted Image Bloodlust (your only way of recovering stamina since you are only investing in dex and cun)

Posted Image Devious Harm

Posted Image Mark of Death

Posted Image
Enduring Mark

Posted Image
Mark of Doom

Posted Image Assassinate

Party

Aveline: with maxed out Shield tree  and upgraded pommel strike provides multiple stagger opportunies with shield bash; maxed out shield also offers great protection and synergises with Varric's Subterfuge for CCC

Varric: near maxed out Subterfuge provides both obscure cover to the DW rogue, enhancing his/her attacks and sets up disorient criticals via Aveline and Shield talents; Goad and Armistice are also useful to keep aggro on Aveline; in this DW build, Varric is a support party member as you are the major DPSer.

Anders: with near maxed out Creation tree (except glyphs), Panacea, Swift Justice (20% cooldown reduction), elemental weapons and whatever else you think is useful for support.

Ring

Apparently there is a ring which prevents knockback in Act II but I have not got that far so it is only a rumour so far.

I hope this was helpful and feedback is welcome.

Best solution is to grab an item with immunity. Also dropping Aveline and taking someone useful and dropping shadow for duelist will make things substantially easier for you. Effectively trying to be a stealthy rogue does nothing but make things more difficult. Spec more tankish and use varric to use goad/corral as well as duelist skills to hold threat.

There are also items that grant immunity to flanking and stuns... very useful.

exactly, as previous poster i decided to go duelist not shadow. with upgraded arcane shield + duelist talents my rogue should be able to tank just fine for a short period of time when needed, then drop into stealth and reopen.

Well, there is that ring but I admit, going Shadow is as much a role playing decision as it is anything else.

Shadow is much more than just a roleplay specialization. If you want to build a full crit/ambush rogue then that is your best option. I played Assassin/Duelist on my first nightmare play through and loved being able to Vendetta/Assassinate back to back. I never found myself pulling hate on many things because everything dies so fast. If you find yourself in over your head with multiple peels, just stealth or decoy, wait, then reopen. I'm running a solo DW Assassin/Shadow Rogue play through right now and it's a friggin' blast.

From my experience, roleplay build wont get an accomplish goal if difficulty curve is set too high.

Adjust the difficulty according to roleplay build is the best bet.

I end up playing on casual/easy more than any setting tho.

I should let you know it doesn't really work.  You're hung up on the same thing that got me too, 90% cooldown.  Its exactly that.  90%.  Not 90% reduction.  Its essentially a 10% reduction so therefore useless.  Its not worth the 6 points you have to put into that tree to get it.  You're better off putting 5 of those points elsewhere, like on the specific upgrades that really make a cooldown difference.  Now if I put 6 points into speed and got at least a 40 to 50% reduction, then it would be worth it.  But 10% is lame for that many points.

Here is a link to my final rogue build I ended the game with as Assassin/Shadow.  Its designed to maximize damage and crit.  Get your dex to 41 (you don't need any more then that, best daggers I've found take 41 dex and you have precision to help get that attack up over 100%) and blow the rest in cunning.  I would also suggest in the later levels you spend 3-6 points in willpower for the extra stamina, but if you are doing your job and exploding people with stabbity-stab, stamina will never be an issue for you anyway.

It's a bit weak in the beginning until you really start rolling.  Afterwards you will be exploding people left and right.
