I played through most DA2 with Varric because, well, he's awsome(and he's very good with that crossbow, Bianca).  One thing that mind was he reminds me a lot of Garrus in ME2, between his voice and his combat dialog i'd swear he was played by the same actor.

Anyone else agree?

After putting up with Ogren in DAO, I was happy to find that Varrick wasn't at all like Ogren and love the character. Varrick was always on my team, every where I went so yes, I do think he is the Garrus of DA2.

Varric is probably the best written companion in any Bioware game I know. So no, he's not the Garrus of Dragon Age. If Garrus is lucky he can one day be the Varric of Mass Effect.

I like this human. He understands.

Women fans will be naming their firstborn sons Varric just like that couple who named their daughter Leliana a while back.

I have a similar bromance (even though I am a lady) with Varric as I do with Garrus, but I have to agree that Varric is more awesome than Garrus. I really love Varric.

Ouch, that hurts.

I'm a Mass Effect fanboy so i'm with Garrus but i wouldn't mind seeing both em go toe-to-toe.  Varric and Bicanca vs Garrus and his M-97 Viper sniper rifle.

Varric was cool, but come on... this is Garrus you're comparing him to. Not even close. That said, Varric is the one companion that I never had any problem with. Everyone else annoyed me to varying degrees.

Varric seemed to me like he was everybodys Big Brother trying to watch out for Hawke and all companions. Leandra should of adopted Varric into the Hawke Family he has no one left :(
And Garrus is cool too but not better than Varric.

Varric is a lot more laid-back than Garrus. I'll give him that.

He is an equal, but given that Garrus has been in our consciousness for so long, it may take a while for Varric to truly make his place as one of BioWare's best characters.

both ME1 and ME2 i had garrus with me at all possible times. and i had varric with me at all times in DA2 since you see him in the begining i  never switched him out because he is one of the best characters in the game, alot like Garrus so my opinion they are about equal

I never liked Garrus much. I mean he was ok, but not really awesome or anything. And he kept doing his calibrations instead of talking to me. Varric is more like a type that you want for a friend.

Varric is like Garrus that doesn't need to calibrate with his gun all the time.

LOL my husband said that too. He thinks Verric and Garrus are alot alike. I wasn't a huge Garrus fan, but I certainly love Verric!

And Varric is more the social type. He looks out for everyone, visits everyone, keeps in touch. He makes sure that Daisy can have her 'save' walks in lowtown at night. He kinda holds the group together. What Hawke does by killing mobs to help them with their companion quests, Varric is doing in socializing. He is just a type you can't dislike. I mean I don't like dwarves. But somehow Varric became my most liked character of DA2. This means means something.

Varric has nothing on Garrus as he doesn't calibrate.

There. I said it

I had to resurrect this to agree. His voice and his total awesomeness (and his utter likeability) draw startling parallels, methinks.

I've barely started the game, but I am seeing the parallels you're talking about kg.

No, Anders is the Garrus of Dragon Age, not only does he angst but like Garrus he is a cat

Nobody.
Ser Pounce-a-lot was possessed by the spirit of Justice, and
transformed his body to look like his former owner. Then one day he
chased a mouse onto a ship and ended up in Kirkwall. It was the weirdest
thing.

My memory may be long but my wrath isn't too terrible. It's like a kitten unleashed from the vet after being dosed with anesthetics.

How people can be anti a character before actually playing the game is a bit beyond me.

However, this is the Bioware forums I should not be surprised.

I'll reserve judgement on Varric=DA version of Garrus when I've finished playing.
