Okay, is it just me?

I played through once as a warrior already and now I started up a mage, but this brother of Hawke's is already making me regret that decision. I'm going through the game and already considering whether or not I should drag him into the Deep Roads to maybe die of some taint.

I love Bethany. I absolutely despise Carver.

Well I like them both. For me it is only a question about mage playthrough or melee playthrough. I don't know why people hate Carver. He is an idiot sometimes, but ... he is your brother. There is no deeper connection in the world than family.

Same boat here, like Bethany - dislike Carver.

Bethany feels strong willed, fiery and interesting.

Carver so far feels boring, shallow and reminds me of a whiny brat.

It's hard to put a sibling you hate out of your party and never use them. Hard, hard stuff.

At first I kind of hated Carver but he's growing on me a bit. As sweet as Bethany is she's kind of bland. I know Carver comes off as a dick sometimes but his willingness to diverge from my PC gives him the extra points in my book for not being a sheep and resigning his destiny to what The Champion would allow or permit.

Bethany is okay, but I find Carver far more interesting with more potential for growth (especially at the endgame). That family spat where Hawke and Carver finally lose their cool with each other but can't reach an impasse is brilliantly realistic of their family dynamic and offers some of the best scripting in the game. But hey, your loss.

Bethany is agreeable, and super friendly. most importantly she's BORING. she has the personality of a cardboard box. she gets max friendship in the first 20 minutes of the game or something nuts like that and barely talks when you bring her along on quests.

Carver is FAR more interesting, yes he argues with you, yes he challenges your choices, yes he's resentful of you. but that makes him significantly more interesting and fun to have around. carver acts like a counter balance, while bethany just sorta goes with whatever you pick.

i went through act 1 as a rogue with bethany with me most of the time. she just sorta sat there and every now and then said "hey im a mage! teehee!". she was so wishy-washy, not even strong in what she believes. she's all i gotta hide from templars but then she's all "well i bet my life would be alright in the circle", wtf woman why you making us hide all the time if you WANT to be in the circle?

however, going through act 1 as a mage with carver in my party most of the time was FAR more fun and interesting, he's constantly challenging your choices, pushing for his beliefs, questioning others. involving himself in situations. arguing with him through all of act 1 was far more fun and interesting than bethany just tagging along like a lost little puppy.

i guess people hate it when people disagree with them? having carver disagree with me alot made my decisions feel more meaningful.

I will never understand people who make class decisions based on the availability of a temporary companion. Sure, Carver was a jerk, but you'd really deprive yourself of magic just so you can hang out with your in-game sister for like... 2 acts? Obviously the people who think that way never had any real interest in magic to begin with.

Carver is a billion times more interesting than Bethany, who is sweet enough but yaaaaawn. Carver saying to Fenris that if he had a problem with my Hawke, then there was a problem with him won me over completely to Team Carver. He is a lot like one of my younger sisters, actually. Big chip on the shoulder because of the perception of not being special (my sister is the middle girl, ANGST AHOY, and Carver has even more justification to be a headcase about it), but when you get down to it, loves her siblings.

Well Bethany isn't that bland. She i pro mages and pro apostates and you are from a family of apostates. Carver is more of a black sheep of the family. He has more the templar/chantry view. You have to see that you get Carver only if you play mage. And he probably thinks the chantry view of mages is the right one and isn't really fond of you being the head of the family and having to help you to hide from the circle or whatever. Bethany is an apostate and probably hopes for your protection. Though later in the game her allegiance with the mages is made more clear.

*spoiler*

I mean you can fight and kill her if you side with the templars.

Carver at first is not at all sympathetic to the templars. It's only after we deal with some crazy blood mage crap that he starts to say, "Uhh ... maybe there's a bit of a point after all. Not for you and Bethany, of course! But other people."

I absolutely enjoyed the Carver rivalry. Pissing him off with snarky comments is always fun, and it's awesome to see him go back to me from the Templars ("[If you want her] you'll have to go through me!"). My dear little brother.

Bethany... nah. If I want a sweet innocent girl, there's always Merrill.

I am not sure if I would call Merrill innocent. She is surely acting the part though.

My first playthrough was a mage and I started hating Carver quickly but then by the end of the game I sort of liked him again. I'm only two hours into the game and I'm already liking her alot more than I did Carver at this point.

I prefer Bethany, she is sweet, caring and everyone seems to like her and she gets along with most everyone. She has found peace with her role as a mage and in the family.

Carver is a rescentful baby brother who feels like the outsider of the family and dont like the concept of dedicating his life to the safety of his family rather than making his own way. That said he is not outright a douche, just unhappy with his lot, he is still protective of Hawke throughout act 1. He feels magic has ruined his life, remember the twins are just 18 years old and it´s obvious Bethany matured alot faster, Carver is still a teen ager in mind.

I'll take Bethany over Carver all the time.

Carver just seems whiny and immature.

Bethany still has that sense of youth to her but has more maturity and her relationships with the other squadmates are awesome, such as Isabella's joking around with her about sex and Varric opening her eyes to the World.

I was heartbroken every time Varric referred to her as "Sunshine" after her passing.

Because of this, In future playthroughs I'll make sure she's either a Warden or in the Circle.

well he is. Bethany is a mage so she had to grow up alot faster, while hawke protected her as the eldest. He took on the younger brother role, they are generally like that

The only good thing I can say about the cardbox box that is Bethany is that she's the only mage in all of Kirkwall who apparently doesn't succumb to Blood Magic.

Carver was intensely loyal, even though he knows full well that mages are dangerous psycopaths. He'll still side with you against his beliefs, because family ultimately comes first for him. I may think he's a huge douche, but I can respect that type of commitment.

Nargh always Carver....
My first Hawke was a rogue and I was pissed of by Bethany...she doesn't argue with my Hawke. And it was always "Oh big sister/brother:" Carver is more like to doubt your decisions and so on. And I will always make him a warden no matter what.

I like Bethany is principle, but since I like playing a mage I tend to be stuck with Carver. The thing about Carver is that he's suffering a classic case of the middle child syndrome and is acting out to get attention. If Hawke takes the time to be nice to him, the relationship between them actually turns kind of heartwarming, if in a strained way.

Carver's problem is he's constantly stuck in you're shadow he's just "hawke's brother" not Carver Hawke infact He actually tries to be his own man by joining the guard he can't help that Aveline was a ****.Infact unless your Hawke is a complete jerk towards him he mellows out as a Warden wheras Bethany gets pissy at you ethier way.

With regards to Bethany, the thing that kinda bugs me about her is that she doesn't really get a happy ending. She either dies, becomes this angst-ridden mess as a Warden, or a obedient servant of the Chantry in the Circle up unto the point that Anders gets his Hezbollah Merit Badge. And am I the only one who feels how screwed up it is that she prefers the medieval gulag run by a gang of religious fanatics and sexual predators over a group of badass heroes of legend?

Just me?
