With regards to Bethany, the thing that kinda bugs me about her is that she doesn't really get a happy ending. She either dies, becomes this angst-ridden mess as a Warden, or a obedient servant of the Chantry in the Circle up unto the point that Anders gets his Hezbollah Merit Badge. And am I the only one who feels how screwed up it is that she prefers the medieval gulag run by a gang of religious fanatics and sexual predators over a group of badass heroes of legend?

Just me?

I don't know, it makes sense to me.

Carver's always wanted to be his own man, so he's happier going with the Wardens.

Bethany just want things to be peaceful, so she's happier in the circle.

Not just you, but in the Circle Mage ending Bethany realizes that mages need their freedom she even says so herself.

I absolutely love having Carver around, he feels so real to me. It is also interesting having a companion who really goes out of his way to challenge you. The Legacy-dlc has some really good conversations with Carver in it.

carver is a bit whiney at first, but i really like the outcome of turning him into a warden. he is incredibly pissed at you at first, but eventually finds purpose and fulfillment in his new role. he then comes to appreciate everything that you have done for him. it was a happy ending for my hawke :P

I'm team Carver all the way. The only time I let him be a templar is with my evil healer/force mage Hawke who wants to be Viscount just so she can always be above him. She's a real b-itch to him and likes to pretend to be Kirkwall's last hope as part of her plan to rule all over Thedas. She's kind of the mage version of Meredith. My good Hawke is a blood mage/force mage that does everything in his power to foster a good relationship with Carver. Although he can never convince Kirkwall about the good heartedness of a blood mage, he does earn his brother's love and respect. Good thing he was a grey warden, that way he didn't have to leave him in Kirkwall after he saved the mages.

In theory I'd like to play with Carver a bit more (I only did it once, and that ended with him in the Templars) but I just can't get past playing the game as a mage Hawke. I mean I love it (Force Mage FTW), but certain parts of the story (ie, any interaction at all with a templar, especially in Act 1) make absolutely zero sense with a mage in your party, let alone actually being one.

At first I liked Bethany more but Carver has a peculiar way of growing on you.

Okay, is it just me?

I played through once as a warrior already and now I started up a mage, but this brother of Hawke's is already making me regret that decision. I'm going through the game and already considering whether or not I should drag him into the Deep Roads to maybe die of some taint.

I love Bethany. I absolutely despise Carver.

I actually like Carver more because of the sibling rivalry. Bethany is sweet and all but Carver has a spark about him. He makes me want to slam his face into something...but then again I feel the same way about my own brother so maybe that's why I like him. ^_^

It's not just you. Carver does come off as kind of a whiny brat, even to his team mates. I think he grows up a little bit towards the end of the game.

Frankly, I found Carver's petulant whining and perpetual sibling inferiority complex absolutely draining on my gaming experience and was happy to rival him completely and send him off to betray the family and be a stupid Templar.

Maybe because I'm already sick of my real siblings giving me crap in real life. XD

When I played through my first times I hated Carver with a passion.

But as with other Characters like Anders and Loghain I have come to like them in their own way after having more playthroughs.
I still prefer Bethany, but perhaps that's because I have younger sisters irl, or perhaps I just like her.
I would readily have romanced Bethany had my own character not been her sister or brother.

I appreciate Carver for his character but still think he's a arse at times, but once you get to friendship him he shows some more charming qualities towards Hawke, especially in the Legacy and MOtA DLC's.

I think I prefer making Bethany a warden. If she goes to the circle I feel she stays her swishy washy self. On the other hand, as a warden she gains a hard edge that makes her more fun. What can I say, I'm cruel like that. lol

Besides, you can get Bethany to fight the circle as a warden. Cruel, I know. But theres no denying there are a ton of blood mages in Kirkwall. Besides, you can assume your Hawke has put two and two together and suspects Orsino as being "O". Perfect for a Templar playthrough.

Carver, he is a bit whiny true, but I can understand why he is like he is. Not being able to do anything meaningful for fear it would bring attention to the family. Everything has to revolve around keeping the mages in the family secret. So a feeling of being unimportant would def bring out some anger.

Bethany is too ugh sweet, even with my Rogue who sided with the Templars, Bethany stood by me, I mean come on, I am slaughtering your people girl.

And I actually prefer Carver joining the Templars, because it's HIS choice and he is finally doing something for himself, and as it turns out he is actually quite sympathic to the mages when he is one, plus he stands up for you at the end.

Carver is inferior to Fenris, so he dies in the Deep Roads.

Bethany is a Mage Hawke missing 2 optional specializations, making her one of the best party members to use.

I prefer Bethany... she's just a sweet girl who wants nothing to do with magic.

Granted, I admit I'm the overprotective Hawke (especially after Lothering)-- and would've done anything to keep her safe. I never use the "red" conversation options in Bioware games (I'm a total angel in all RPD games), but anything regarding Bethanys safety I always chose em'; hell, my Hawke threatened to kill Stroud when he said he won't make her into a Warden.

I was so depressed when I learned Bethany hated my Hawke afterwards. At the time, I figured she would live like how my Warden did in DAO- but apparently the Wardens in DAO aren't really considered standard "Warden" protocol. So I felt like i failed her on both counts. Luckily she confronted my Hawke in Act 3 and confessed her feelings, so that made things a lot better.

Does anyone know if she left the Wardens to go back to Hawke? Cassandra says in an earlier cutscene that Bethany WAS a Warden. However in Act 3, Bethany says "Right now, I'm not a Warden- I'm your sister."

I liked them both, probably Bethany more. Although admittedly the one time I had Carver I went friendship with him, which I think helped a lot.

Interesting speculation - but I doubt it. The Anders subplot, I think, is meant to emphasise that you never really leave the Wardens.

Though I do think that Warden Bethany pops up a little too often. It hardly goes along with the "Boo hoo I'll never see my sister again" thing when she can pop up up to 6 times in the rest of the game. I'm not sure you're meant to read too much about Bethany's motives into that - her character is just a slave to Hawke's plot requirements.

Yeah I thought that was ironic since Warden Bethany appears way more than Circle Bethany. I like her development better as a Warden though. Even though she's tainted with nightmares for the rest of her life, but hey-- great sibling drama. At least with Circle Bethany she still retains some of her pre-Deep Roads innocence.

Bethany is much better than Carver but there are ways to make him less of an ass.

First of all have Carver in party ALL the time because last time I checked Carver gets approval points either friendship or rivalry in every quest. Check Dragon age wikia and raise Carver's friendship, its actually possible but you have to choose 90% of dialouge that carver approves of therefore sometimes siding with templars...

Anyway after raising his friendship enough and he is considered a friend instead of a rival decide to take him to deep roads that grants another 10 points to friendship. Take Anders with you and make him become a grey warden, its a much better option for Carver than being a Templar. When you play DLC legacy or when he joins you at the end of the game you'll see that he is a much better person. On last conversation he apologizes to Hawke and says he will never leave your side or turn against you again.

When becoming a Warden Bethany suffers all the time and she hates that she is not in contact with her family but Carver likes it. Bethany with times likes circle and  is in total contact with her family. Becoming a Grey Warden changes Carver greatly especially when he is a friend.

Are Carver and Bethany only around in Act 1?

Should I remove their equipment before the end of Act 1?

All I know is Warrior/rogue Hawke has Bethany at his/her side.
Mage Hawke has Carver at his/her side.

I haven't experienced Bethany, since I'm on my first playthrough, but I really liked having Carver at my side. He is an opinionated guy who will remain loyal whilst also challenging at the same time. He is the best friend who will outright say when he disagrees with you.

Yeah. Carver is a little too whiny. Still. I'm still at Act 1.

I also played Legend, with him. Given that this is the story about Malcolm Hawke and also involves Varric, having sibling and Varric is a must.

Carver also has amusing banter with fellow companions. Either being unintentionally offensive or being so self absorbed that everyone points out what a fusspot he is. I also like seeing the Protagonist Hawke and Carver arguing.

I don't like Carver as a person. If he existed in real life, I would not get on with him. But as a fictional character (which he is thank goodness), I like him. Not love him, just like him.

As companions, yes. They will always leave you at the end of Act 1, one way or another (each has several possible fates at that point).

Depending on what happens to them through Act 1, they can make cameo appearances later, but as you've already done Legacy, the most you'll get out of Carver as a companion is one mission (and possibly the Mark of the Assassin DLC).

Should I remove their equipment before the end of Act 1?

You can. If they reappear later they will have their own (better) equipment. But I don't consider it a high priority. You shouldn't really be strapped for cash after Act 1.
