I like Carver's growth through the game if you make an effort to friend him. He realizes he's been an ass and while he may not agree with everything you do, he will still fight on your behalf.
Carver vs Bethany

I enjoyed the sibling rivalry aspect of their relationship, with sarcastic Hawke kind of knowing she's better than him at everything and playfully tweaking him about it at every opportunity, even though it was kind of clear she still loved him (but maybe that's because I occasionally threw a few diplomatic responses in to avoid pushing him too far) and would never do anything to truly hurt him.
^This. I'm an older sister myself, and the Carver/Hawke dynamic reminds me of the tension I still have with my own sister. Case in point, I was over at her house last night, put two pieces into a jigsaw puzzle (two pieces out of a 1000 piece puzzle that was less than half finished) and she got upset at me for "taking over her puzzle." Ah... siblings. ![]()

I prefer Bethany. I really like the sister dynamic she and femHawke have. She's like the little sister I never had. I could embarrass her and tease her, but in the end, I just wanted what was best for her. I wanted her to be safe. And then she's taken away by forces beyond Hawke's control, that actually upset me.
Everybody rips on DA2, but if the game did anything right, it was Hawke's family arc. I got way more invested in Hawke's family than I thought I would. And then one day you just find yourself alone in the Hawke estate and you realize that Hawke doesn't have anybody from her old life left anymore, that hit me hard.

Carver bites back more than Bethany, who feels more submissive to her older sibling. He can be kind of hardheaded, but I see that as a mark in his favor. He's willing to clash with you over things he cares about, while I wouldn't trust Bethany to tell me anything more than what I want to hear.
I'll always value independence more than dependency.

This. Regardless of which sibling survives, Hawke's relationship with their family was very well done.
From a purely personal standpoint, I prefer Carver... but that's 'cause I like grumpy insecure try-hards.

I much prefer Bethany, simply put I find Carver to be too much of an ass. He is massively insecure despite the fact that he is an accomplished soldier by age 18 who can swing a sword that is bigger than me. Doesn't help that it makes no sense for a Mage Hawke to tramp around Kirkwall completely unimpeded by all of the Templars everywhere. Anders has an entire group of refugees looking out for him, and Merril keeps to herself in the alienage. But Hawke? Oh don't mind me I'll just become Champion and ladeedada stay out in the open.
Bethany is much happier in the Circle, but I like the fact that as a Grey Warden she has a connection to her distant cousin the Hero of Fereldan (an Amell mage in my canon).
Does it suck that my character's brother gets used as an ogre stress ball in an unavoidable cinematic? Yes, but far less than losing my sister and ending up with said brother for the rest of the game. Rogue and Warrior Hawkes all the way for me then.

How do Bethany and Carver develop on the friendship and rivalry paths?
I don't know about Bethany, but with Carver it's mostly a few dialogue changes - he's a little more easygoing if you somehow manage to Friend him.
The possible divergent storylines have a MUCH greater impact on Bethany and Carver's personalities and attitudes than friendship/rivalry, imo. It's not like with the rest of the companions.

Does Carver grow up as a person in the rivalry path or just friendship?
He'll be whiny until The Last Straw (if he's a warden) as a rival. Not sure if he whines as a templar during The Last Straw though. If you encounter him in the Deep Roads in Act 3 as a rival he whines about you taking his thunder like a child. Keep in mind he hadn't seen you for 3 years and barely seen you for 6. Such behavior is pitiful.

I'll take Bethany over Carver all the time.
Carver just seems whiny and immature.
Bethany still has that sense of youth to her but has more maturity and her relationships with the other squadmates are awesome, such as Isabella's joking around with her about sex and Varric opening her eyes to the World.
I was heartbroken every time Varric referred to her as "Sunshine" after her passing.
Because of this, In future playthroughs I'll make sure she's either a Warden or in the Circle.
yeah I prefer Bethany as well. I like both but in different ways but of the 2 I prefer Bethany. Carver does kind of remind me of how my own brother used to be selfish and pretty ignorant. I've never let Bethany die and I don't think I could she's too nice and caring. It's a shame theother mages aren't more like her there wouldn't have been half the trouble there was if that was the case. Carver was always a troublemaker. I've not let either of them die in any of my playthroughs but of the 2 I'd rather sacrifice Carver than Bethany.

Yeah I like the little Hawke sisters thing going on too in DA2 especially in the Legacy DLC The Hawke sister dynamic ripping through the Carta thugs. Kinda cute

I find Bethany to be so dull. Her characterization is sweet and afraid of templars. That's about as much as there is to her. She does get a bit of an edge if she becomes a Warden and is bitter towards Hawke, but it's too little development. Carver feels like a real person and seems to have more reactions to the other companions, as well. Yes, I ship Merrill/Carver. But honestly, most of Bethany's banters seem to be about magic and templars. She has no other defining characteristics.

Granted, I play as a male mage Hawke, so I get Carver, but I find it so familiar.
I'm the older brother in my family, and some of the arguments between Carver and Hawke are SO similar between myself and my younger brothers it is astonishing.
But it was satisfying that despite our differences, we always had each other's backs, and I always felt it was a strong message at the end of act 3:
The mage and the templar, a family again.

I'd be interested in seeing that only to see how Carver and Bethany interact. iirc, we barely get a glimpse at their interaction with each other.

I feel that the Lothering prologue was a result of the rushed development schedule. First because it looks nothing like Lothering and feels very rushed, but also because I think it would make more sense emotionally and narratively if we actually saw the entire Hawke family living their life in Lothering before it hit the fan.
We could have seen the three Hawke siblings plus mama Amell all together, so that when we loose one of the siblings in the prologue, we actually know them better as a character. Right now, until a player has finished a playthrough with each sibling, the ogre attack doesn't mean much, as the player doesn't know the sibling at all. There's no connection.
