I 'like' Sebastian, but I'm disappointed on how he turned out. He had so much potential, both as an LI and a DLC companion. Shale was a DLC and felt a lot more indepth than Sebastian did and Sebastian as a LI is... disappointing. While he's the only character you can get 'married' to, you don't even get passed the holding hands stage, the hell is up with that?

When I first heard of Sebastian, I was hoping for someone like Leliana, someone with a firm belief in the maker, but also had his own sense of personality. Sebastian seems utterly obsessed with the Chantry/Maker though, even more so than Anders about mages freedom and rights and such.

I was a lucky person who got him for free though and I have yet to finish my first 'offical' play through of DA2 though, so maybe it's just me.

Sebastian is 'very' religious? I don't know about that... His outlook on the issues that surround him is just as much rooted on reason as it is on devotion.

To me he looks and sounds like an average and believable hot-blooded, slightly conflicted young man who's been brought up in a religious environment. I like him.

...I have to admit that he really did grate on my nerves thanks to the way how he dissed mages, as if blindly spewing what he has been taught. He kept rambling about mages, not caring a damn for the fact of his other party members being all mages themselves. I can understand Fenris' hate here, as it's well based, but Sebastian's reasons sound a bit hollow.

Or how he kept urging the Grand Cleric to leave, yammering about it all the time...who does he think he is? She is a grown woman, of wisdom and social standing, dammit. Same goes for his brave outburst of laying siege to Kirkwall...only to back off spinelessly when Hawke just merely hisses at him for that. If he went and grew a pair of real balls, I'd be willing to take him into consideration. :D

I appreciate the clarification. And I agree with you about today's typical gamer, and probably especially the RPG gamer. It was actually the only solid reason I could come up with for so many people ranking Sebastian as their least favorite party member. Since I'm not at all religious personally, but appreciate hearing rational arguments from people who are, I like Sebastian a lot. I suppose I'm just surprised at how far in the minority I am. :)

It's not the fact that he's religious in general that bothers me. It's the fact that I really hate the Chantry and his being religious means he's a huge supporter. It's not a case of RL biases, just that I have plenty of reason to hate this fictional religion that's far too secular and corrupt.

JamesX wrote...
Ander and Fenris is every bit as preachy, just they don't preach religion. It is a mystery why people would like mass murderer like Anders and hate Sebastian.

I think it would only be a mystery if people felt that Anders was more moral than Sebastian (and even then I suppose you could go somewhere with Anders' dedication to ending oppression). For fictional characters, morality doesn't always have a lot to do with whether they are liked or not. Anders is a very interesting character no matter what else you might think of him. I don't really find Sebastian very compelling.

Eveangeline wrote...
He'll side with the mages, despite it being against his religion.

Not really. He will side against executing every mage in Kirkwall. He specifically says that the mages will need to be dealt with (not allowed to be left on their own as some in the Circle are fighting for) but only after they all die. I don't see why protesting the unnecessary massacre of mages would go against Sebastian's religion.

RinjiRenee wrote...
Exactly that.  Even if you friend him and get him to follow his path with the Chantry, and if you even just let Anders go, he goes back on everything he stands for and spits venom at you before leaving.  Ugh.  I understand that you're angry, dude, but destroy an entire city for one man's actions?  Maybe he'll calm the heck down when he gets back to Starkhaven, and then post up a bounty poster for Anders and rant about the MARDAR.

It's made even worse since Elthina made it clear that she was planning on staying and putting herself in danger to protect Kirkwall. You can't really honor someone's memory or get justice for them by destroying everything they stood for.

I guess I can understand why someone might view him as flighty.  He does go back and forth, possibly because he isn't certain that the Chantry is where he belongs and he also isn't sure that Starkhaven is where he belongs.  He certainly *wants* the Chantry to be his place, but considering that he's young and a bit hot-headed, when faced with something really dreadful that tests his faith, he doesn't stop to think before he acts.  Plus considering that the Grand Cleric has become sort of a mother figure to him as well as an embodiment of the true faith in his eyes, expecting him to act with grace and aplomb on the instant of her shocking, tragic death might be expecting a little too much.

Maybe RinjiRenee is right and he will post an advertisement about the MARDAR (LOL btw) when he finally stops to think on his way back to Starkhaven.  I guess we won't know for quite a while, but it's interesting to speculate.

In any event, thanks to the people who took time out to share their thoughts on the topic.

Meh, I loved Sebastian.

I think people just don't like religion. People are way quicker to defend Anders, who was so fanatically devoted to his beliefs that he killed hundreds of innocent people with the goal of seeing thousands more die as a result. And then they turn around in the same breath and get angry that Sebastian was a "zealot," because ... he encouraged Fenris towards a spiritual awakening? Because he got angry/sad when the woman who was practically a mother to him was murdered for a cause he was opposed to? IDK.

It's a religion thing, I'm pretty sure. Leliana got away with it because she was such a rebel thinker. If someone follows the "rules" of an organized religion, they're hated on principle. Society we live in.

For the record, I'm agnostic leaning atheist, so I'm not just defending the faith here. I just think a well written religious character is interesting, ESPECIALLY because it's a trait we tend to look on as negative.

I just got his DLC and have only played the first mission, so this is a first impression. I wasn't planning on being taken with his character, and still am skeptical, but he has quiet presence that I think is largely down to the voice acting. (Muad'dib!) I am a little disappointed that hearing his romance angle doesn't involve him wavering based on human weakness. I guess that would give him more humanity to me, even if he ended up rejecting Hawke for the Maker.

Well, I was a mage. I think any mage has reason enough to dislike Sebastian (and Fenris). They're both rather insulting. "Mages are all evil, blahblahblah, mages are out of control!" Leader. Mage. Right here.

Also, his character felt... incomplete?

I didn't mind him, but I didn't care about him either.
In the end, when he asked me how I'd feel if he had been inside the Chantry when Anders blew it up, I wished for one of Hawke's cutscene shrugs. Because honestly, my Hawke (and I) wouldn't have cared all that much.

Simply put he's very close-minded. He's kind, but he's so far deep into his own beliefs which he believes is the only right way to go in life. There's hardly any consideration or respect for other's views and ways of living.

I find him a little preachy, but he joined me when I sided with the Magi, so all is forgotten.

he was my favorite. I found him to be the most mentaly balanced of all the companions with his moral compass pointing in the right direction. I am not the most religious person, but I admire people with conviction. I did not find him preachy, he mearly pointed out what the maker had to offer and left it up to the person to decide if it was something they were interested in. Ferris even made an appearence at the chantry on his own. As far as "hating mages", this is not true. He did not approve of their abuse or templars overstepping their power. However, after Anders goes Tim McVeigh on the chantry - who else would you expect him to side with.

I don't hate Seb but I sometimes find him a bit much with his preaching at times just like with Anders who I love to death (no pun intended there). I guess it's just a matter of tolerance. I don't use Seb that much in my party because I opt for Varric as ranged dps and as a rogue when I'm playing a mage. I guess eventually I'll have to put Seb in my party to see how he reacts but I have a feeling he won't like me that much lmao. I'm pro save the mages afterall ;)

Because he's a self rightous little (tut tut)?

I actually do like him.....but his moaning and preaching gets too much fast....bit like with Fenris.

When he threatened me with coming back with his personal army, I wanted a dialogue scene where I could say....I've just slaughtered half of kirkwall.....and you're threatening me?

The only things redeeming Sebastian are his cool armor and the banter he has with Varric that ends with Varric saying "You can't even pretend to be interesting, can you?"

Also, when Merrill points out (quite rightly) the problems of having gleaming white armor he says "The light of the Maker is my armor". I wanted to gag.

"I can think of a few services you could perform for me..."
"What??? I didn't mean that. I think I have to pray... A lot."

Very like Alistair but more sincerely devout. One can imagine Alistair is a believer in a free and easy way (I do) but Bastian is pro Chantry. Doesn't seem to be a bad guy for all that. He gave me 15 friendship after the above dialogue.

Rosa, I disagree. An apostate Hawke can easily dislike Sebastian because he supports the slavery of mages (and this is precisely what Hawke calls it in conversation to Fenris) and his outright anti-Mage views. It's apparent from the attempt to bring him into the Fade to help the half-elven mage that he buys into the negative perception of mages overall, so he got under my skin when I initially thought of friendship because He lost his family.

I enjoy Vael and Fenris precisely because of their contrarian, anti-mage views. It's so terribly fun to have them around and then do things like support blood mages or enslave elves, and watch for their reactions.

I'd love to listen to Sebastian's voice for hours and hours... if I could stand to hear a word he was saying. Well, that's a bit too harsh a response, but he does bug me sometimes.

When he's in my group, I have to balance it out with those who will take their own snipes at him. Merrill, Anders and Isabela are usually pretty good at that! Makes having him around easier. I loved Merrill's chat about the Chant of Light and how it was a great story, but had a lot of holes.

Sebastian and Fenris have some pretty good banters, too, though it seems that Sebastian is slowly converting Fenris.

Wow, this sounds terribly anti-religious, and I'm really not. I have my own very strong beliefs, but I think religious beliefs are incredibly personal and best kept to yourself, and it grates me when it's not.

His voice is still terribly yummy, though.

The character I really like because he's pretty much perfect for my templar.  And he loves Dog.

I hate him because he's a BioWare bait and switch. Even the official strategy guide says you can romance him.

Yeah, you get one ridiculous line and then nothing.

But this is a Bioware game!  Take your pants off or GTFO!   Lol, kidding.  (Mostly. :?)

I'm not a huge Sebastian fan either.  The party banter I've heard so far with him is mostly boring (except for Anders messing with him about his belt and the cloud discussion).  And if I need an awesome archer, I already have Varric, whose stats I've been controlling since the very beginning of the game, not Act 2.

On the flip side, does anyone else like Sebastian because his romance is chaste? I do.
