I haven't had any success with either Isabela or Varric being able to pick locks on chests and such. Even the simple ones are beyond their capabilities.
How do I train that? I can't see anything in either's talent tree. Or is the only way to play a rogue Hawke?

you need to pump up their cunning, 20 for standard locks, 30 for complex and 40 for master locks

Btw do not use "Auto LevelUp" function for your rogues and max their cunning as archiev1976 mentioned

OK, then. I had been using auto-level-up; apparently none of them got that high. I hope I am not missing anything important by not picking the chests.

If you find an item that gives Bonus to Lockpicking, you can pick any lock in the game with just 27 cunning.

As far as I remember, there's nothing important in a locked chest that's going to make you miss out on a quest or anything.
Even your armor sets are all found in non-locked containers. It just adds a little extra loot (ie: gold) to your playthrough. Nothing to loose sleep over.
