I found it really strange that of all the people you meet in the game, who see you performing magic, when you first meet Cullen when he's confronting Wilmod, even if you unload with thunder and lightning and the very fires of damnation, he seems totally oblivious to the fact you're a mage.  This after other NPC's (Fenris!) have commented on you casting spells in front of them.

I just found that meeting with Cullen to be really jarring, because it's like he's in a different universe or something, especially since he delivers that little lecture to you about mages being dangerous and so forth.  For the entire conversation, I had the feeling my MageHawke was standing there going, um, dude, you DID see me shooting lightning bolts out of my fingertips just a few seconds ago, right?  Are you trying to be subtle?  Are you just really unobservant?  If you've decided not to attack me because I just saved your ass, come out and say so, man.  Sheesh.

Yes, that was really bad. What they could have done is make Cullen be unconscious during the fight.

But I recognize the difficulty of making a mage PC feel like a real mage, with people reacting accordingly. I mean...you are wearing robes and have a staff...could you possibly be a mage? You are casting firestorms in the streets and no one notices. I realize it's hard to achieve a real "mage experience", but things like Cullen start to sound extremely stupid.

Well, Wesley doesn't seem to realize you're a mage either, addressing only Bethany as an apostate.

While it's probably lazy writing, I'm sure you can use your imagination to fill in these incongruities with something more fanciful. It's part of why we play RPGs right?

Yeah, nobody in the game seems to notice that you're a mage. But i can accept that in term of gameplay and story segregation, because otherwise there would be no other story than "Hawke gets hunted by templars and is made tranquil for resisting" if you ask me ;)

No, he does, if you play a mage.  It's a subtle difference, but the conversation is different if Hawke is also a mage.  Cullen was the only one that struck me as particularly bad--in other places, people do notice that you're a mage.  It's just that usually, you've done something like save their life and they are (reasonably) disposed to leave you alone.  (Either that, or they're too scared to say anything to your face.)

It kind of startled me that the Arvaraad tries to kill you even if you AREN'T a mage, though.  It made perfect sense on my mage playthrough that he'd worry about me getting infected, but if he's worried about the Saarebas speaking to ANYONE, what about all the Qunari standing around there?  What about HIMSELF?

Granted, he seemed pretty pissed off about the corpses, so he could have just been using that as an excuse to fit killing you under his "role".

Sometimes you're fighting in broad daylight in the streets of Kirkwall and no one blinks an eye.

I'm willing to let the whole Cullen thing slide under "He's a massive idiot", there's certainly enough hints to that.
Still, I remain by what I already expressed several times - the biggest opportunity DA2 missed, was not dragging apostate Hawke off to the circle.
(See also my signature, for a first attempt of fixing that, shameless advert warning)

The fact that Cullen is blond in DA2 bothered me more. But... that's just me...

Maybe he was just relieved that Hawke saved his ass. I'm willing to consent that he is a moron, if it wasn't for needing Wynne in Origins I would have murdered Cullen every time.

I have to say though, he is much less annoying in this game. Over the years in game I guess he lost a bit of his hatred.
