I'm reading forum posts and constantly stumbling over expressions like CC and AoE and other abbreviations, and going HUH? every time.  Those who are posting obviously know what they're talking about, but for me who are relatively new on the forum yet, such posts don't make sense cause I have no idea what they are talking about.  There are other abbreviations too, like FF, DLC and others.

Could we make a thread (this one or another) where such expressions are explained for easy use, so we all can read and understand posts (and don't need to ask) ? Would be really useful.

I'm starting it by offering: DLC = Downloadable Contents  (I think?)
and asking what CC, AoE and FF stands for, and hope someone will explain those.  Please add other frequently used abbreviations with explanations too. :)

CQC is close quarter combat, CC is indeed crowd control.

Yeah, usually CC means "crowd control," i.e. abilities that disable enemies for a time (examples are Force Field, Crushing Prison, Petrify, etc.).

Another one is "DPS," meaning damage per second or rate of damage output. It is often just simply used to mean "damage."

FF also means Focus Fire - all characters attacking the same enemy to kill it as quickly as possible.

LOS means Line of Sight

A2M means... ah, nevermind.

PVP in DAO is FUBAR, but that's OK since there's no MP.  :)

DoT: Damage over Time
DW: Dual Wield
WTFPWN: An approach to defeating an opponent predicated upon an all-out frenzied assault rather than considered tactical finesse. See also http://www.urbandict...php?term=wtfpwn for LOLZ (definition 1 is by far the most amusing).

Some common RPG abbreviations are listed at http://community.cod...ad.php?t=111462

Damage Per Second.

Hrm I guess I should explain further since this one has volved.

People used to calculate attacks based on DPS, what is more pwerful a swing that does 100 damage and taks 15 seconds, or a swing that does 52 damag and takes 5 seconds?   The best way to compare them is in Damage Per Second.

After 'DPS' became common terminology, people started talking about pure "DPS builds", or builds that are designed purely to pump out the most DPS without reguard to anything else such as protection or maneuverability or whatever.

Saying "I have a DPS rogue" means "I built a rogue based entirely on wanting to do the most damage"

In an MMO you may also hear people in a lagre raid call for a party to "switch to DPS or g DPS", which simply means "Stop doing whatever it is your class normally does and focus on damage."

Because typing out commonly used terms in full is just time consuming and not as snappy.

Agreed.

As for a few of them. I take CC to mean Close Combat and Crowd Control. You can usually tell which one someone means based on the context of the rest of their post or the thread. Or both.

According to the UDA*, WTFPWN is when you pwn someone in a way that he doesn't even have time to realize wtf (hence the name) is happening.
Not only all-out frenzied assaults count, but also stealthy kills.

*UDA stands for Urban Dictionary Academy

Ah, I see now. I found Damage Per Second but couldn't see how it applied exactly. Your evolution makes sense. So this is why I see the contrast between a "tank" and a "dps". Tanks pay some attention to defense as well as offense, while dps is all about offense.

Now I know! And knowing is half the battle...the other half is violence.
