Damage Per Second.

Hrm I guess I should explain further since this one has volved.

People used to calculate attacks based on DPS, what is more pwerful a swing that does 100 damage and taks 15 seconds, or a swing that does 52 damag and takes 5 seconds?   The best way to compare them is in Damage Per Second.

After 'DPS' became common terminology, people started talking about pure "DPS builds", or builds that are designed purely to pump out the most DPS without reguard to anything else such as protection or maneuverability or whatever.

Saying "I have a DPS rogue" means "I built a rogue based entirely on wanting to do the most damage"

In an MMO you may also hear people in a lagre raid call for a party to "switch to DPS or g DPS", which simply means "Stop doing whatever it is your class normally does and focus on damage."

Ah, I see now. I found Damage Per Second but couldn't see how it applied exactly. Your evolution makes sense. So this is why I see the contrast between a "tank" and a "dps". Tanks pay some attention to defense as well as offense, while dps is all about offense.

Now I know! And knowing is half the battle...the other half is violence.

But allso know there is a diffrence of a spike damageer and a DPS.

Rouges make realy good DPS's with daggers cause they do rapid damage over a short time.  While 2HD and Mages can do great SPIKES, doing massive damage all at once.

It is called burst damage, but it still goes under dps category. Dps is plain damage per second, recorded  usually during a certain fight, it doesnt matter if you did all your damage in single blast or steady chopping.

CC - Crowd Control, things like stuns, fear, freezing, immobilization of any kind.
DPS - Damage Per Second
Tank - The sword and board warrior who holds the interest of the mobs.
Mobs - Hostile NPCs.
Threat/Aggro - The mechanic by which mobs choose their attack targets. Tanks generally produce the most threat/hate/aggro.
AoE - Area of Effect, spells that effect an entire area rather than just one target.
DLC - Downloadable Content.
ME - Mass Effect, whereas ME2 is Mass Effect 2.
KotOR - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the critically acclaimed Star Wars BioWare RPG.
SWTOR/TOR - Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMORPG in development by BioWare.
NWN - Neverwinter Nights, another BioWare RPG.
BG2 - Baldur's Gate 2, the beginning of what we know and love as BioWare RPGs.
WoW - World of Warcraft, the insanely popular MMORPG developed by Blizzard Entertainment, based on the beloved WarCraft RTS franchise.
RPG - Role-Playing Game.
RTS - Real-Time Strategy game.
MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.
FF - Final Fantasy, the grand daddy of console RPGs, developed by Square Enix (aka Squaresoft in the old days). When followed by a number, it indicates the iteration of Final Fantasy series the poster is talking about. Ex: FF6 is my favourite RPG of all time. (Note: Can also refer to friendly fire, it's all about the context.)
DoT - Damage Over Time, refers to a spell that does damage to a target over a set period of time.
HoT - Heal Over Time, same idea as a DoT, but with healing instead of damage.
LotR - Lord of the Rings, the famous fantasy trilogy set in Middle Earth, written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
RtO - Return to Ostagar, the much delayed piece of DLC for Dragon Age: Origins.
IDK - I don't know.
WTF - What the fruitcake?
IMO - In my opinion. Alternatively, IMHO may be used, which is 'in my honest opinion.'
ROFL - Roll on the floor laughing, some people use ROTFL.
LMAO - Laughing my ass off, can be used in conjunction with ROFL to produce ROFLMAO, rolling on the floor laughing my ass off.
GTFO - Get the frig out.
GRRM - Refers to the popular fantasy author, George R. R. Martin.
GW - Grey Warden. (Note: Can also refer to the MMO Guild Wars.)
AC/AC2 - Assassin's Creed, and its sequel, the acclaimed action game developed by Ubisoft. People generally draw correlations between DA:O and AC2 as a result of their questionable DLC practices.
OTOH - On the other hand. Personally, I dislike this abbreviation, it just seems like plain laziness on the posters' part.
SOE - Sony Online Entertainment, you'll hear people talking in hushed tones about the insidious nature of SOE and their ability to completely castrate any promising MMO.
MW2 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the record-breaking and morally ambiguous FPS, developed by Infinity Ward.
IIRC - If I recall correctly.
AFAIK - As far as I know.

That's all I can think of that's been used in these forums.

Sometimes burst is better, though. Especially if enemy has good HoT so you can avoid it with 1shot kills.

Or you just don´t see a point in a lousy dagger if you can have a big sword. One says Sword size reflects dick size, after all.

-"And tonight, there's only one place he could be- the sci-fi convention."

-"Then let's go! And way to save precious seconds by abbreviating science fiction as sci-fi.
But next time, maybe say sci-fi con or S.F.C., because time is of the essence.
Or as we say at the agency, T.O. - No. No, wait.
Time is- is of-T.I.O. -T.I.O. - What am I spelling here?"

Sorry I've been waiting for a chance to quote this and a thread about abbreviations seems fitting.

Abbreviations can be fine but when you get different ones meaning the same thing or the same abbreviation meaning different things.
Heh it makes me think of the first time someone quoted me and just replied QFT(quoted for truth) and I replied "did you just tell me to shut up?" thinking it was "quit ****ing talking".

Evade tanking with class like rogue is possible but tricky if the class doesnt have aggro management tools like taunt. Pure damage can draw aggro pretty solidly but is not very reliable.

Unless one is a stupid mage that insists on starting every fight with AoE.  That's pretty reliable aggro... 'specially from the tank and healer.  Image IPB

Not an abbreviation, but its important to remember that rouge belongs in your purse, not in your game. Rogues belong in your game and not in your purse.

Just ignore the obvious World of Warcraft players with their lazy abbreviations and jargon.  They inflicted stupid words like tank, aggro, and buff on the world.
