I dislike quite a few of the design decision's, most of them that have already been mentioned either in thread or at least on this forum. Human only (VO I like but I play elves in fantasy games so sue me.) Limited Inventory and companion customisation etc etc...
The other impression that I have got both from my playthrough so far and reading these boards is that Bioware should have called this game:
Dragonage: Kirkwall or Dragonage: Champion
and then said that DAO 2 would be coming out next year or 2 years from now.
By marketing this game as simply set in the World of Dragonage rather then as a direct sequel to DAO, they would have changed the expectations of the fanbase and allowed themselves some leeway for their design decisions along with reassuring fans that another sequel which would be more in line with the spirit of DAO would be forthcoming.

EA just needs to realize that this is not Madden, NFS or C&C series (that they already messed up, hopefully Visceral can pull it out of slough). This is DRAGON AGE. A work of ART that you can't interfere with. IMO
Yes it is.. (although I understand necessity, I felt serious reservations when I saw EA had been added to the name..).

overall i ended up liking it tho, so i don't know if i can really say i'm disappointed or whatnot, i mean what does being disappointed without even playing the game - then playing the game and enjoying it - really mean?
what i can say is that it has a lot of missed opportunities to be a better game and that criticism of it is deserved, but i can't say i raged or anything... a good healthy dose of hype-deflation can do wonders for your perspective on things

I don't understand how some people can even call it 'solid'. Sure, the foundation of the game sounds solid--more complex battle system, different story structure...but when the game is put together, the flaws just rip apart any good found in the game.
It really is a shame that BioWare really has no sort of competition anymore, because even people who may not even enjoy the game simply shrug and think, "Eh, it's the best we're gonna get for a long time."

& I don't enjoy DA2 as much as I should, and when I play games I normally like I keep being in them once I've walked off from the computer, as I ponder and relive what happened in my head. I don't with DA2, or I played it and I often found it to be entertaining, but its not close to be what games like FO1, FO2, KOTOR2, DA:O and several others have been to me. Important.
DA2 is simply a game that I can't care about, even if I tried; well I did care for the Merrill story, but that was broken, I cared for the family of Hawk, and that was fine, but also weird and often unrewarding (you seriously don't see either sibling if they join the circle/templars, even if you have maxed out your friendship).
& there is so much else with the game - that all in all strips the game off any sort of immersion, and lastly as I ended it I felt relieved it was done; and not what I normally feel after I've completed a game I love ~ the need for more.
& I don't hate, or dislike BW, in truth I like BW for many things; and they would have to do something horrible to real people for me to actually hate them (say that we found out that they eat babies, that might do it).

There are a very small number of quality WRPG makers right now that aren't just focused on the latest MMO POS. I can't afford to cut Bioware off in protest or I won't get my gaming fix.
However, the shocking lack of loyalty to their core fanbase is something that I will remember if the situation changes and developers like CD Projekt Red start becoming more numerous. I'm loyal now both for nostalgia and a lack of available options, not due to what they've done with Witch Hunt, Awakenings and now Dragon Age 2.

I didnt mind many of the things people took as negatives. This game did innovate with its 'framed narrative' setting and the amount of superbly written quests it had. I didnt skip any dialog and had intense emotional reactions to some quests. I found myself choosing responses not because they were 'right' or 'best' but because of the character and the situation i was in.
The combat on hard difficulty was immensely enjoyable, even when i wiped a half a dozen times. I went in with no expectations and left loving it. Im playing through DA:O and awakenings now, which i never finished, just so I can replay DA2 with an imported save. Hopefully a patch is released by then.
The only feature i really liked to have had that origins had was an expanded journal and a screenshot record of the choices that I made. The story was a bit disjointed and i played in sittings of 1-2 hours. When i returned to my play sessions I would forget the quest details. i really would have liked to see a much more detailed journal to remind me what i was doing and why. It would also be awesome to be able to have the game record your dialog choices in a small replay file and be able to click on any completed quest in your journal and replay the cutscenes, and export them to a movie file similar to games like the sims. That way you could edit your playthrough as a short movie to share. It would really be fun to see the differences from other players.

i disagree that it rips apart any good from the game, it just will never be able to be a great game no matter how much patching goes into it

say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
i liked Demon's Souls, The Witcher and Oblivion more than Dragon Age: Origins... so you can imagine a year when RPG GOTY is between Dragon Age 2, The Witcher 2, Dark Souls, and Skyrim... there's plenty of games to choose from this year, i still like DA2 but it's not going to come close to these other games for me

If you enjoy the combat, odds are the enemy wave mechanics and single dungeon design philosy will eventually grate on you to the point where you just want it to stop. If you like the story, odds are the pointless sidequests will eventually eat your soul. Those are the points I was trying to make.

Demon's Souls is a PS3 exclusive, and the PS3 is system Origins sold worse on. If I recall correctly, The Witcher and Oblivion were released months or years apart from Origins.
The Witcher 2, Dark Souls, and Skyrim won't be released for months after DA2 will be. Skyrim and presumably Dark Souls aren't really competition to DA2 as they're really in their own little sub-genre. Only The Witcher 2 is really a story driven sort of threat to DA2, and because it will be released solely on the PC (so far), it will most likely lack the face-stomping sales that BioWare's successful multiplatform games get.
So, basically, for the foreseeable future, if you like story driven RPGs, you're going to have to be satisfied with a BioWare product or The Witcher 2.
Whereas if you were a fan of, say, shooters or racing games, I'm sure we can all rattle off five or six high profile games coming out by this time next year.

This game is more like Phantasy Star: Online or .Hack. It's an MMORPG style game for single players.

Much better combat and a cool new art style are ruined by a rush to market that forces enemy waves, repeated areas, lack of real choice effects and poorer quest design than normal for Bioware.

i agree. lol i do to and when i played the demo i was so upset. then i was like maybe its just the demo. but no. its not. so overall i am pretty disappointed with DA2. guess its back to playing DA1, even tho ive beaten it numerous times including all the extra dlc the story is still great.
although this is true i do have to say that the graphics where better. and flemyth looked awsome but really did anyone that make up for the downfalls of this game? nope. so yeah... still disappointed.

I just don't understand where these developers are getting the idea that we gamers want simplistic, "streamlined" crapfests. The combat is a nice, welcome change from the first one, but in comparison, Dragon Age 1 blows 2 out of the water in terms of depth.

People who claim DA2 is an excellent game with significant flaws severely boggle my sense of what is considered excellent and what should be deemed not ready for human consumption. Dragon Age 2 is, at best, a middle of the road game with the luxury of a big name stamp. If some indie company pushed out this game, it would definitely, definitely pull in the 4s and 6s it should be receiving.
i think it's just because of the reputation of the developer, a "flawed gem" like Cryostasis has a 69 Metacritic score but i liked it more than Dead Space and i'm more forgiving of its faults than if the game was made by a AAA developer, lord knows there are lots of obscure single player rpg's on the PC that have followings and defenders
