I can think of three four things off-hand.
1)the toolset and/or adding non-standard DLC
2)Excessive heat on the GPU and/or GPU failure approaching
3)a driver issue and/or the texture settings of the game
4)overclocking the GPU

I'd say that driver issue is the most probably.

1. this happened before I ever touched dlc
2. Ive been playing other games as well, this is the only game currently that gives me this problem, and it only happens sometimes to some npcs or once it happened to Dog
3. im using 195.39 drivers for my 8800gts 512mb
4. my card is not overclocked

I'd like to think it's the game since when this happens I am unable to take screenshots in game. Even running fraps i can't take screenshots. The way I took that screenshot was with SnagIt with the game in windowed mode. Furthermore, when this happens, if I go into my Profile (with the game still loaded, you know, press esc, then click profile) and then go to screenshots, all of the screenshots show up grey.

If I exit to the main menu, i can see these just fine! This is non-typical behavior from the game.
Furthermore, when this situation happens, going to the main menu, then clicking exit, crashes the game, not CTD, but a window pops up saying its (dragon age) encountered an error and needs to close.

All that means is that the game is trying to do something that the computer doesn't like, it could be calling a bad driver file, or it could be overheating.  It's probably something in the drivers that it doesn't like. But you might try disabling the GPU PhysX mode (you can do it through the PhysX icon in the control panel) and force it to run on the CPU and see if that helps at all.

the only thing I have for physx is in the control panel where it says "gpu enabled"

if i go into the actual control panel of windows and click nvidia physx (32-bit) it cant find nvcplui.exe

this is under windows 7 64

you might want to get the updated version of PhysX... there's a link in the 2nd post of the Troubleshooting FAQ to download it from NVidia... the on-disc version doesn't apparently have the necessary files for a complete Win 7 install

It was the same version that I had already installed, but I reinstalled it anyways.

However I get the same thing trying to click on "nvidia physx (32 bit)" in my windows control panel

I can get to this fine through the nvidia control panel.

I had a similar issue once, figured it had something to do with the memory leak. A simple restart of my system cleared it up.

There's no memory leak.  If there were it would affect all users regardless of system specs or settings and this is clearly not the case.

disabling it on the gpu makes no difference to this texture bug coming up every now and then

seems the nvcplui.exe is in program files, so i guess their drivers have a directory link broken somewhere
