I was a bit irritated, because I really disliked Anders. Would've been nice if Merril could've had the basic healing, at least.
That said, I played the game on Hard, and the only time I actually dumped Merril for Anders was during the High Dragon battle, where I just couldn't seem to make it without someone doing a bit of healing. Other than that, with the game being designed for not gulping down a hundred potions a minute, Healing doesn't seem to be as important as in Origins. I'm on my second playthrough, and I'm trying to do that without a mage at all. Works so far, just a bit annoying since nobody's got any good AoE talents yet.
Am i only one fusterated with lack of healer choice? *Spoiler*

Guys alot of DA2 is a metagame. You need to sit back and think how best to compliment your teammates.
Cross class combos, Crowd Control, Pure DPS builds, and Protection spells will mitigate alot of the healing BS.
Granted I would love for Merril to at least have access to the Creation tree. Because Haste is just to damn important for Melee.

I'm glad healing's been de-emphasized. If it was as easy and mindless as it was in DA:O, I never would have learned how to play DA2 the right way. If I keep threat on the warrior and exploit cross-class combos to their fullest, I don't even miss having a healer. Simple as that.
If I get lazy or careless, I get wiped. Which is how it should work.

I agree. There does appear to be a growing trend in this thread and others. If you can successfully exploit cross class combos your damage is so high it mitigates the need for a dedicated healer. I have Anders in the party, but is in more of a DPS role (specifically primal and arcane) and I only use him to heal in emergencies. In my present playthrough, I am a 2h Hawke and am not using a tank or dedicated healer and have had a great time so far. I will say I tend to use the tactical pause often enough to change the flow of battle when needs be.

I completely agree. Anders was far from a favourite of mine and I disliked having him in my party just so that I had a healer.

Yeah, someone didn't think things through.
At a minimum, they should have let Merril have the spirit healer/creation paths.
If you aren't a mage, and for story reasons don't side with Mages/Anders, you have no healer. Its lame.

Healing is really, really, really not that useful in this game. Regroup is useful, but only insofar as that you can be lazier. Having a healer REALLY only gives you one extra pot cooldown a minute.
I played on Hard, and actually found it got EASIER when I benched Anders for Merrill.
Even regroup can be replaced with grenades! I forget the name but there are revive grenades anyone can throw now. The problem is you still need someone with a heal with the cooldown on heal potions seems like an eternity to me. What I hate about Anders is to access group heal or regroup you have to disable all offensive spells. If you are using him offensively you have to change modes to use his group heal or regroup too much management. You can't have an offensive/heal balance like you can with your own mage. It is either complete support heal or complete offense if you don't want to manage sustained modes.

Basically you have no healing. Anders is usually a wasted spot if he has to run pancea sustain just for group heal and revive - he has NO DPS when that's on besides maybe staff attacks which is lol that tickles dps. Plus, he dies. Alot. Over and over. Always wants to get in face hump range and grab aggro - even when set to "ranged" or told to "hold".
Healing wouldn't be that big of a deal but I really don't think health regeneration is working right. Health does not seem to want to go up on it's own in battle - even when geared up with all + health regen gear. The only way to raise it it seems is healing or pots and pots have a big cooldown.

Build a few sets of gear with different elemental resistances and you won't miss healing as much.

This is the other big difference. There is no Juggernaut armor. Runes are more important. I have yet to find any armor that gives any resistance without runes. Mages get some magic resistance due to magic but only physical damage is resisted by armor. Elemental Aegis and its upgrade helps a lot but runes are much more important than DAO. I ran through awakenings in Juggernaut and had so much armor resistance I never needed a rune. In DA2 I had to get fire runes to fight the High Dragon. Warriors and rogues just have hardly any resistances without them.

Free tip. If you don't want to use Anders, look at Merril's Entropy tree. That's all of Debuffs to throw around that can even turn boss fights into a wet noodle fist match compared to what they are truely capable of.
Sure Bioware made some mistakes, but in reguards to Merril's entropy tree they didn't. That woman can turn you into a sniveling child with the prowess of an asthmatic school boy anchored to a wheel chair.
And 50% of her Hexs work on bosses. How rad is that?
No pun intended on my name.
