Can someone please tell me if it is possible to upgrade or return a game to get the digital version instead?

An upgrade seems unlikely but seeing how the game isn't released yet (so your order hasn't shipped) you can probably cancel your preorder and order the digital version instead. Though that's a question us forumites can hardly answer for certain, you'd better ask at he place you placed your order.

Most game stores dont allow you to returned open boxes... I dont even think gamestop will give you trade in credit for pc games even if its in an upopened box.

Actually I did get my game refunded by steam today and i then bought the digital version
