I'm really glad that Bioware allowed champions to also be mages.  Given the storyline, it doesn't always make the most sense, at least at first glance.  However, I appreciate them giving the reins to players to fill in the blanks.

At first, I just shrugged at the inconsistency of being a mage running around Kirkwall saving the day, while other mages were trying their hardest to get the hell out of town.  But this awesome storyline totally drew me in, and I found myself actively thinking of ways this whole situation could make sense.  For me, Hawke's mage status was only a rumor in Acts I & II, but with all the witnesses in the Viscount's Keep in the fight against the Qunari, it becomes an open secret in Act III.

As I see it, the Champion of Kirkwall hasn't come out publicly as a mage and the Templars are in no rush to officially confirm it, either.  Labeling the Champion as an apostate and following protocol to the letter, Gallows and all, would only serve to prove that Kirkwall's beloved hero was indeed a mage and completely undercut the Templar argument that the only "good mages" are Circle mages.

Imprisoning the Champion would cause widespread unrest against the Templars, since he or she is loved by the common people, especially the significant Ferelden minority, as well as the nobility, many of whom owe their very lives to the Champion.  Plus, three years is plenty of time for the Champion to get involved with plenty of business deals, similar to the mine partnership with Hubert.  With wealth and connections in all the right places, the Templars have good reason to make an exception for the Champion, provided he or she is discreet.  A situation like this isn't stable over the long haul, which fits into how the storyline comes to a head over the mage issue.

Anyway, that's what I've come up with ;).  Other mage players out there, what's your take?

I approve of your theories, but I'm going to stick with my thought of "Everyone knows Hawke is a mage, but the Templars are too scared of him to take him into custody". :P

Basically I think you were supposedly hiding your magic until the battle with the arishok. Then you had to unleash and in front of a lot of people. Nobles for the most part, city guards, etc. You saved Kirkwall, THEN the Templars come.

So the city as a whole supports you, you are the hero and thus Merideth allows you to remain 'free' for the time being. She even says something to this effect at the end.

There are also "Loyalist" mages who are supportive of the Chantry and Templar Order, so while the NPCs don't directly adjust to your choices, in your mind you can justify supporting either side of the conflict in DA2

My theory is similar to yours, but in practice all they need is to send out 24 Templar Hunters simultaneously at me and I'll be dead meat in a split second.
