Is it wrong to want to give Merriel a serious beating?

As Isabela would say, Merrill deserves a spanking.

Isabela is right, Merrill is like a kitten and kittens need to be watched over constantly since they certainly can't take care of themselves.

It's about as wrong as destroying each evil tome in front of her, and laughing maniacally while doing it.

Hey, its what I did. Perfect way to gain a lot of rivalry with her quickly.

WIth a mastered Primal tree for max powered stone armor + the rivalry bonus Merrill can have 60% damage resistance. With the large amount of health she should have being a blood mage, she becomes a mini tank.

I love Merrill. I can't even give her a sarcastic conversation response even if I think it would be appropriate. It is always the green olive branch.
She has me wrapped around her little twiggy finger.

Well, not a beating, but my Lady Hawke certainly would have loved to shake her a bit.

Merril is not really naive, I found her incredibly arrogant. She can see how dangerous it is to deal with demons, everybody is warning her against it, if you take her into the fade, she actually falls for the promises of the demon there, but still she is convinced that everybody is wrong and she is right.

She is convinced that she can deal with this demon and no harm will come of it, because she knows exactly what she is doing and everbody is underestimating her etc, etc. No wonder, she nearly falls prey to a Pride Demon.

Come to think of this, I changed my mind: Perhaps a sharp smack would make her be more reasonable.

I love her as she is, a wonderful character both bright and naive at the same time. Her party banter often makes me smile, and I can't help but laugh out load at times.

She's great! Her daft personality is just hilarious at time. Especially when she talks to Varric.

She along with fenris I wanted to actually smack around the head knock some sense into her and just hated fenris even taking into account his boo hoo back story. Anders hate him, he was annoying in awakening but funny at times, in DA2 hes annoying without the funny and what he does cant be avoided (not saying what) so yeh would shoot him soon as met him if Bioware gave me freedom of choice in game at all. The ginger ninja seems incompetant but the rest of the members I actually get along with fine, they good.

I certainly didn't want to beat her, just lightly smack her over the head to clue her into how foolish she's being.

It's funny, the arguments I see being made by people who dislike her character is that she's too naive and arrogant; Seems to me that's exactly what the writers intended you to feel her character. It's what makes her such a compelling character --she's sweet but at the same time putting her life (and the lives of others) at great risk.
I don't see many people saying they're indifferent to her as a character -- to me that's the true definition of disliking a character.

I would say that if people have strong feelings about a character, the charcater is a success!

Yeap I agree and would happily help you with that! For some reason I really can't stand Merriel! Unsure if it's her welsh (?) accent, or the fact she just looks a little odd - either way she grates on me and I don't use her unless I have no choice in the matter...

On the other hand Sebastian and his accent.....

I had strong feelings about Jar Jar Binks. I wanted him to die a slow and painful death.

You can be annoyed about a character in both good and bad ways.

But Merrill is one of my favorite characters in DA2. She's pretty much also the only blood mage that isn't actually evil. She doesn't really understand what she's doing. That's the fun part. You do kind of want to yell at her at the very least for being so dumb, but it's all good fun.

Like I said, I'd of sold her to tervinter, I had no feelings about her one way or another. I am sure there is a magister somewhere that will pay well for her. Maybe even take me on as an apprentice, and I am sure Merril would have fallen for it.
Hawke: Merril this man is from tervinter he knows all about your mirrior.
Merril: He does, oh that is nice, will he show me how to make it work?
Hawke: Yes but only if you go with him and I back to his home, he needs special tools to make it work. Now off you go and pack up your aluvian.
Merril: Oh thank you, this will teach me so much about elven history.
Hawke(under his breath in an evil whisper.): Yes foolish elf, yes it will. Mu hu ha ha ha !!!!

Every good character need flaw.
That's how writers make drama out of it, so if merril's sane and wise enough, it would be boring and lifeless.

Without giving spoilers I cannot say why, but she deserves Hawke's sword in the chest as much as any he has slaughtered in his travels.

But no.. I wouldn't beat her. That would be wrong.

Merrill's probably the most adorable thing this side of a nest of kitten-puppy hybrids, but oh god..that damn mirror.

No Merrill, you're not going to outsmart the demon. It's been eating souls for a very, very long time and it specializes in eating people proud enough to think they can outsmart it. Even if it helps you fix the mirror before it eats you it'll only do so because it benefits from it - by being able to use it as a portal, say. Fixing the damn thing will only result in the demon cackling 'Just as planned!'. It won't actually help your clan in any way. Now please just go back to being adorable and leave making actual plans to me, thank you very much.

May be its her stupidity and lack of competence that elven keeper let her out of the tribe.

She wasn't keeper material.

She said she was willing to die for her people. there should have been a nice way to say " yes, that is all well and good, but this will end badly because ..DEMONS POSSESS PEOPLE. You will indeed die for your people and you'll be forcing me to be the one that kills you, because you are being completely idiotic."
Luckily the equally dumb Keeper stepped in.

Ok, Jar Jar is the exception.  Jar Jar is Bad, and it is a fact, not an opinion!  :)
