Merrill's probably the most adorable thing this side of a nest of kitten-puppy hybrids, but oh god..that damn mirror.

No Merrill, you're not going to outsmart the demon. It's been eating souls for a very, very long time and it specializes in eating people proud enough to think they can outsmart it. Even if it helps you fix the mirror before it eats you it'll only do so because it benefits from it - by being able to use it as a portal, say. Fixing the damn thing will only result in the demon cackling 'Just as planned!'. It won't actually help your clan in any way. Now please just go back to being adorable and leave making actual plans to me, thank you very much.

She said she was willing to die for her people. there should have been a nice way to say " yes, that is all well and good, but this will end badly because ..DEMONS POSSESS PEOPLE. You will indeed die for your people and you'll be forcing me to be the one that kills you, because you are being completely idiotic."
Luckily the equally dumb Keeper stepped in.

Yeah, she gets the dying part..but after that her clan is minus one Merrill and plus one demon mirror. What the hell are they going to do with a demon mirror?

I don't play these games for the romance, but it's funny to see comments like Merrill romance is the best in any bioware game!

Really? You flirt with her 2-3 times without her reciprocating in the slightest, and then she randomly shows up at your house and declares her love. This is well done?

I don't think anyone is accusing Merrill of being a horrible racial stereotype created primarily for merchandising opportunities; With few exceptions the worst type of reaction you can have to a character is no reaction at all.

I think the character was based on a british sitcom thingy called the Vicar of Dibley, the vicars blonde friend is exactly like Merrill. But with no magic.

I can barely stand to look at her, much less have a romance. In fact I removed her from the party as soon as I could....just hope I won't need her.

Bit too much of a Tali expy, but she has her moments. Still, a tad too cynical nerd bait for me to fall for. We've seen this character before, Bioware. Hopefully there will be no "cute clumsy awkward girls" in DA3.

There is stupid you want to shake, and then there is stupid you want to hit.

Merill is the latter.

Merill is adorable in a naive serial killer that wants to see how body parts come together sort of way.

For me the thing that adds to her is her accent - her personality is very archetypally Welsh; easy-going, friendly but maybe a bit naive - and the quality of the acting. If she was voiced by an American VA, probably with a voice like Willow from Buffy, it would be incredibly annoying and would just make her feel like the class nerd, aimed at other nerds. Like the red-headed girl Joss Whedon puts into everything he writes. But apart from the odd comic relief part, she didn't seem that stupid or "Durrr how is babby maed?" and her lack of cynicism actually explains why she was so willing to be a blood mage.

I saw someone say they don't like this "nice blood mage" thing they're going for - but that's the point, while so far they've all been cheesy, evil wizards of the most generic sort, Merrill's character is more about the idea of something just not appreciating the dangers because, for one thing, they haven't been brought up around constant Chantry propaganda. Unlike Morrigan who was just the generic witch, feeling like a modern day 13-year-old Wiccan who's decided to talk like a Shakespearian character for some weird reason, Merrill is more ambiguous. Morrigan would just admit she's using it for power (in that annoying, one-tone-fits-all voice) and Anders would be all "Grrr, god damn blood mages!" but it feels different when the person genuinely believes they're doing the right thing.

For the record, I actually found Aveline's personality more forced in her romance parts. It focused to much on her dutiful, distant side but just cast aside the "she's been married and gone through all this before at least once" with a throwaway remark.

Agreed on Carver. Occasionally Fenris, who manages to out-emo Carver from time to time. But not Merrill. There were obviously points where my character felt that way, but it's too much fun watching that oblivious, train-wreck-waiting-to-happen in action from the sidelines.

Oh man, really? People didn't like Merrill? I am losing some serious faith in humanity.

I just adore her. On the surface she seems a little naive (in a charming way), but some of the things she says (and does...I mean, hello, blood mage) illustrate a character that is more experienced and even jaded than she appears. Look at her banter with other characters. She definitely holds her own.

And then there's just her personality. I love the nervous babbling especially. She is going to be a lot like Morrigan in that it's going to be hard for me to make a character that doesn't romance her.

I really dig her voice too, not just the accent but the delivery. Especially in her banter with Fenris where she's like "Did you step on something sharp, Fenris? Smash your fingers in a door? Smack your head on a low beam?" After almost everything she says I'm either laughing or going "aww!"

I cannot stand Merrill. I normally love Gwen Myles, but Merrill just bugs me. Carver bugs me only a tiny bit less.

Yes, that's very wrong. Something must be seriously wrong with you.:P

Though, sometimes I'd like to slap her on the back of the head for being such a naive child. Perhaps that's wrong of me..

People, if a puppy was as arrogant and dangerous as Merril, I would tear its head out without a second thought. Specially for his arrogance.
I have always fought against the templars in these games, but blood magic is wrong. Hawke should have slain Merril the moment that stupid **** started cutting herself. And she looks like a little girl, too, the hell? I think this is actually clever of Bioware: showing us that evil and stupidity are not always so clear cut, in fact, sometimes they are cute and adorable.
but **** her.

Merrill really frustrated me. I only took her along because I have a hard time turning down extra party members, but I seriously thought about it for her. I probably gave it more thought then the first time I had to choose to kill Loghain, or to kill the Architect. It... damn it, she's stupid. Dangerously stupid.

But then again I never got the Tali obsession, either. She reminded me of a little sister, and Merrill reminds me of... I don't know... if Bambi randomly ate woodland creatures.

Eh... I hated Merrill. Every aspect of her character. But beating her? lol... nah. To me that sounds worse than just killing somebody you don't like. I just left her in Kirkwall and only traveled with her if I had to for a specific quest.

Now, if she'd betrayed me, I would have killed her. That's inexcusable in rpgs (for me). I don't think I'd start throwing punches just because she's annoying though.

WHY!?

She is the most adorable LI I have yet to come across in a BW game. Normally, I romance multiple characters, to get a different side to the game, but Merrill just won my little gaming heart over, completely!

Is it the naivety that bothers you? She gets loads better in Act 2 and 3. Is it the foolish use of blood magic? She is very careful, but you can always stop her from using it by romancing her via the rivalry path...
