Just letting you guys know that we're still reading these.

Great, because here comes a big one :)

First of all, thanks to the OP for the initiative. I tried to start a thread (for PC only) and got 9 pages of comments, but died in the end. So I will chime in here with some ideas that were in my thread, plus personal things.

Before I go ahead, I'll just say that I'm not far in the game. So I won't comment on the story and general elements, I'll do that later. I've been a gamer for many years, a Bioware fanboy (you can call me that since I loved BG, BG2, NWN, ME1, ME2, DAO) but I play other games like Fable, Starcraft, CoD, bla bla bla.

And I'm gonna use Mikeunicus method to write this :)

Liked: New Art Style
The new art style taken for Dragon Age 2 is splendid. The Wounded Coast was wow, even if I play DirectX9 with MED resolution. I think the new art gives more character to the game and the colors are bright. It feels better.

Disliked: New Art Style
I really don't like the elf race in Dragon Age 2. Personal thing, but DAO was spot on in my opinion.

Disliked: Area recycling
Nothing to mention here!

Disliked: Combat (including difficulty)
This is probably the most frustrating thing for me. I really don't like the direction this was taken. First, the Nightmare difficulty, which I want to play because that's the only one with Friendly Fire. I totally dislike this level of difficulty. It looks like it was not tested or I became really poor at gaming suddenly. Pair this to the new fast and furious combat pace... too fast. For a tactical player, fast paced combat means a LOT more pausing in combat... and because there is a lot of battle, this gets boring. Pair that with the wave system of enemies and now it's totally killing the tactical aspect of the game. The cooldown on healing spells and potions is really slow related to the combat speed. So when you unleash everything you have at the first wave and are in the cooldown period of your healing, there comes the second wave... with a mage!!! Another thing that removed some tactical element is the removal of the 2nd Weapon Set and it's a concern for me. I played a rogue twice in Origins and I loved to enter the battle with a bow and switch to dual-weapons during combat. Now it is long and dull to do, so I just stick to daggers. And, the lack of free camera or tactical camera on PC is killing my experience, especially with the new pace.

To summarize, I hate the combat in DA2. I would have hoped for Origins speed of combat, or a little quicker to please more people or (DA2 slowed down). But definitely no waves. Oh and Nightmare in Origins was perfect. So what I did yesterday, after shouting at my computer, was to put the difficulty to normal and explode everything to at least enjoy the story and other elements. Because combat is extremely frustrating for me and unfortunately, it's a big part of the game.

An exemple of a battle: I fight spiders. My 3 other companions have more than enough opposition and there is a poisonous spider behind. So I send my rogue (Hawke). I receive the poison spit and I’m knocked back. For some reason, the timing between each poison spit is exactly the timing of the knockback effect. So, the spider kills my rogue because I wasn’t able to do a damn thing. Never got the chance to jump away, go stealth, etc. because of the sync between the attacks and knockbacks. In the meantime, Aveline is fightning the spiders. Her health drops quickly, so I take a potion. Then, seconds later, the cooldown of the potion is halfway, she is back the to exact same critical health and wasn’t able to deliver more than a few hits because she was knockback all the time.

My suggestions: keep the new animations, but add a little time between each attack, this will slow the pace. Balance nightmare and knockdown effects and balance potions and heal cooldowns. Oh and remove the waves! or apply waves were it means something, not every battle. It’s fun to progress in the story, not just fight.

Disliked: Origins finishing moves replaced by exploding corpses
Finishing moves where a nice nice small detail in Origins. I loved to see the finishing moves of Alistair on the Ogres, or my rogue on a darkspawn (head cut). Now what we have is exploding corpses... for no reason. It gives a feel of power yeah, but Origins moves gave a feel of competence. If you want to stick with exploding corpses, well two-handed weapon and magic is more suited than daggers to produce this.

Disliked: Free camera or tactical view missing.
As mentioned in Combat above.

Disliked: Side Quests
There are a lot of side quests I really don't care. I find things on the ground somewhere and follow a marker to deliver that something to a person I really don't care. So far, seriously, there is only one quest I read in the journal and it's the main one. For all the others, I just follow the markers and complete the quest without knowing what I was really doing. I don't even know what quest is related to the name on the marker because there are so many insignificant ones... I mean, in ME1 and ME2, I read all the planetary descriptions... In DAO, I read almost all codex entries. Now in DA2, because of the pace the game wants us to have (see combat), I haven't once read a codex entry. I just feel that there is a big disconnection between the pace of the combat and the pace of the rest of the game.

Disliked: Companions conversations
I won't judge them at the moment, but I'm just gonna agree that dialogs were simplified a lot. I loved to talk to Leliana about her bard tales, Morrigan about her past, Zevran about his missions, etc. Now it's just... the essential. But then you have a huge amount of insignificant sidequests... and a lot of codex entries.

Liked: Friend/Rivalry system
That’s a nice thing. Instead of buying their love (gifts in Origins), not companions reacts to what you do and become rival or friend. I like that idea and actually hope it’s just a start and will be built on for the future.

Disliked: Customization removal
I hate what happened to customization. I understand that to some players, having to care about the equipment of companions was boring and not interesting. But for some, it was one great element of fun. What do we do then? I think that there should have been a compromise to satisfy both side of the fence instead of just removing this feature. I don’t know... less armors in loot. Have armors not fit everybody or need a smith to adjust the armor for a companion only (to keep the original look), etc. There are tons of ideas for this on the forum. I just hate to not be able to equip a longsword+dagger to my Rogue... to have Varric restricted to crossbow, to have all armors locked for companions... Plus the 2nd weapon slot.. for Rogue, especially Hawke, that would have been nice.

Disliked: Disconnection between elements
In a city full of templars, having apostate mages in my team... being attacked by a lot of people in city streets for no apparent reasons... This all doesn’t connect. In the middle of the street, during day, I launch crazy spells and make bodies explode everywhere. People around... well don’t care because there is no reaction. Templars don’t show up or wait for you at the city gate. People know Hawke around the city because people talk (some dialogs give us an indication that Hawke is well known)... but nobody seems to know that her sister is unleashing fireballs like crazy to help Hawke. I know this is probably really hard to be consistent in this matter (Origins, at least you had the excuse of being or helping a grey warden against a Blight), but there is some major disconnection there, especially because everything is in one city and not in a region (Origins, more placed to hide). Suggestions: I don’t know to be honest, it’s just something that I noticed. Maybe restrict magic in the city? I know, probably boring.

Liked: All the rest
So far in my game... I don't feel a big connection with Hawke, I mean... no connection at all. But I'll wait to see the story pan before talking about that.
So, to me, from where I am in the game, I don’t like the decisions that were taken in development of Dragon Age 2. Decisions about priorities according to the time constraint they had. It’s just that instead of changing some features to adapt, they decided to remove them. In all the points I mentioned above, there is only one that is a total gamebreak for me: combat. All the rest I can live with it and still enjoy the game (to a certain degree), but combat....

Thanks for reading this really long reply :)

another thing I'd like to see in DA3 is in the opening portions of a game, if there are going to be locked chests, give us a rogue that can open them! I'm a loot grabber, I grab any and all possible loot, and while I always play as a Rogue first, on my warrior and mage playthroughs it sucks for me to have no rogue in the party that can open up chests. They could just be temporary characters that can open chests and then you kill them off eventually, but in Origins if you weren't a Rogue most of the Rogues you got up until Lothering couldn't even open a chest (Daveth)

I had an idea come to mind way back that I think would've been an acceptable solution. If they're going to make armor restricted to companions, they should make it so that you pick up a set of armor that can only be equipped on that person.

Example: you pick up an elven mage robe and only Merrill can equip it, but there are various kinds of these Merrill only mage robes in the game.

and how could you not love Bianca?

Yep, that's the kind of idea I like (about armors). About Bianca, well I like her... it's just that before I got Isabella, I could have used another sword carrier up front when combat gets close. But that was just an example, I don't think I'm gonna use Varric a lot in my game, from now on (I now have all companions).

Rogue-type enemies

They're so overpowered! They'll disappear and one shot my healer, or if they don't, they'll half my tank's health! And there seems to be no CD. Tsk Tsk!

There is a CD. Use Mind Blast or Telekinetic Burst at the right time, and you'll smack them out of their Stealth, stun them, and possibly knock them back. You can't use it right when they start stealth or right before they're about to attack, I guess they have "invulnerability frames" then, but anytime in-between you can counter. They DO have too much HP, IMO. Why would a rogue-type character have more HP than warrior-type characters? Also, invest a little more in healer HP and/or defense (Rock Armor) and they won't get 1-hit KOed. Also, some AoE spells reveal their positions.

Friendly Fire toggle

Some
of us want FF on levels like hard, where combat isn't as tough as NM,
or as easy as normal. Personally, I hate it, but the people want what
they want! :P

Thing is... friendly fire totally changes how useful certain abilities are. Right now, gravitic ring is one of my most useful spells. But if my tanks had to stay out of it, it'd be much less useful. Plus, there's the fact that you can't swap them out to a crossbow like you could in Origins. Puttings your entire party on hold is the only way to keep them from walking straight into firestorms, but that reduces the team's effectiveness. I did play the PC version of Origins and I appreciated friendly fire in that game, but in this game it just wouldn't work IMO.

Stop Running Into Attacks
To me, I'd like the ability to put certain party members of hold and not the entire party. Or at least make it so that AI doesn't run into AoE spells to get to enemies. It'd be nice if they intelligently went around.

You Can Aim, Right?
In the intro, I had to uncheck many of Bethany's abilities because she'd fire off a fireball at incoming enemies as they were rushing, for instance, and by the time the fireball made its way over there the enemies were already out of the blast zone. She just threw away MP. I'm not asking AI to have perfect aim, but it'd be nice if they tried to predict vectors at least a little bit.

Some Origins-type Attacks Remain
The Golem has a punch attack, and the Verterral has a spit attack that will always hit the player no matter how far away they move or how well they dodge. I really like the new system, but you should make sure not to mix the two.

shame. I'm always using Varric because put him in Speed mode and Bianca's song and he's firing crossbow bolts like crazy that knock everyone back. He's my definite ranged attacker along with Merrill.

I just want to take a moment to say that I really, really appreciate that.

Also to add one other thing I'd forgotten.

Character appearances are mostly really good.  In some cases stunningly lifelike.  I was amazed that I could see freckles on Aveline's face when the camera got close enough.

Although...

There seemed to be certain eyecolors (pale blue, I believe) that was disturbing in some people.  Like Bodhan and Sandal for example.  They seemed...zombielike.  Uncanny valley, perhaps?

For those of you asking "Why not ditch the junk items and just give coin directly". Well it's obvious to me that it forces you to...

a: Buy backpack extensions from the shops.
b: Force you to return to Kirkwall to visit the shops and dump the junk.

Why you can't just drop stuff is beyond me. Is everything covered in special glue that only shopkeepers can remove? Let us throw away items at the very least... Maybe give items away to beggers or drop them into containers that you get stuff out of... Forcing you to carry everything you pick up until you get to a shop is a pain in the bum if you come across something you want and find your inventory is full because you have forgotten to dump the stuff off at the shops.

Ser Upsettingshorts, if you mean the junk, yes you are able to destroy them too. Most of the junk you pick up is only worth a few coppers anyway, so I usually end up destroying it to make room for armor and such.

I posted something similar in another thread but feel it is more appropriate here.

The camera was at times annoying. Personally I would prefer a detachable camera which can go higher. However if that is not possible I would really love for it not to "snap to" targets when you are positioning an AOE spell. It can occasionally be very difficult or even impossible to position them correctly because of this.

Wave combat would have been ok for a bit but obviously way overused. Would love to know the reasoning behind that design decision.

I think reused maps would have been ok if they had simply adjusted the minimap to suit each one. It would obviously be better if each one was unique but there were A LOT of them. Given that they wanted so many different areas they probably needed to do something clever. It isn't as bad a feature as is being made out. Again would love design comment on that.

Edit: Just thought I should point out that overall I think it is an excellent game, but this is the criticism thread.

Could not agree more on the camera issue. Found this to be the biggest pain of all.

I liked origins version too, now in DA 2 whenever I click on something the screen automatically looks down on your character so I can't see anything in front of me.

I have to say, please, please, please, keep the amount of import recognitions/cameos the same (unless you want to do more :D) in future titles. I felt a lot more satisfied in DA2 (way more than Mass Effect 2--that was just disappointing), and there were so many little nods through dialogue, letters, and cameos; I loved it.

Also loved how decisions actually had an impact within the game, outside of an ending epilogue slide. Keep up the great reactivity, this was a huge area of improvement over Origins.

I'm going to say that the last act definitely felt rushed.

In future implementation of the Franchise I think It would be more appropriated.

Act 1: Shortest 8 hours
Act 2: Longest 16 hours
Act 3: Medium 8-16 hours

(The Time time is just an abstract method of measuring content).

Also re-using maps wouldn't be to bad if it was once act (That had 9 or 10 hours of game play when play fulled.) I felt the amount of reused maps was inappropriate. Although I though the hidden areas on the maps was a nice treat and I would enjoy seeing that in further implementations.

The ending felt unsatisfying. I understand that DAII was a jumping point in the world, and the end was more of a new beginning. However, as a player I should feel that something has completed. It created too many questions without closing enough doors.

Fix the crashes... for the love of god this game has froze, crashed, and/or failed to load a save game at least 150+ times on me. Did you even play test the PC version? Or are all the versions this atrocious? The lack of tactical camera is completly rediculous and mind blowing why it was decided to be taken out. I can not keep my mages up against a wall because when I click on them the camera goes crazy. Why was this taken out? What imporvement did that add to the game?

Next time you guys release a game I will 100% NOT be buying it until 6 months to years later when it is worth the price of dealing with this crap. It is sad to see one of my favorite developers fall from so high to make a game filled with poor gameplay decisions, ignoring of the PC gamers that have supported you since the beginning, and cheap shortcuts added to reduce areas/items to lower development time.

I hope you guys learned a lesson from releasing this terrible game and that you will make sure the next game that you release, ME3 more then likely, is done right. I can only hope your office over the past week has not been filled with relief and celebration that you released a great product, because you did not. Do not hide behind the vial of 9+ reviews that you so obviously added to your box art and website, because those early reviews are all paid for by EA garbage. Everybody on your team, especially the person who decided this was ready to ship, should be absolutely ashamed of how this game turned out. If I were I high up member of your development team I would seriously sit down with my team and figure out how this turned out so poor.

You made a bad game from a story point of view, from a technical point of view, from an RPG point of view, and from a gameplay point of view. You completely forgot that DA:O was the spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series. I leave you with this picture.

My 2 cents:

Likes:

Act 2. Technically I didn't like it, I really loved it.
Friendship / Rivalry option. I am not sure if it's an improvement, but it was an interesting innovation and provided a new challenge. I also like the way that the best way to win approval is not always to take the nice guy option (e.g. your reaction to Merrill early on and other players reactions to it). It forces the player to think about what those around him think.

Dislikes:

Act 3. I felt railroaded and some of the mages' reactions didn't ring true to me. I also had trouble finding a couple of quests, which may have been related to my completing the "Murder of Crows" quest too early. That's really all I can say without spoilers.
Character interactions. I loved the banter, possibly even more than in DAO, but catching up to the individuals was awkward. By the time I got to them I often had two or three things to talk with them about, and it would often be a case of finishing the conversation, and then clicking on them again straight away to get the next conversation option. I also didn't like the fact that there was usually an awkward break between gameplay mode and the cutscene. You can walk into Aveline's office with Aveline, then click on her and all of a sudden you're supposed to be walking in on a conversation she's having with somebody else.
Cone of cold. The fact that on normal difficulty this does not involve friendly fire is disappointing, but I'm willing to believe that I'm in a minority on this point.
Retaliate. Aveline got this ability and then used it at inappropriate times. I know that you can change that using the tactics settings, which I did the second time I noticed her standing her doing nothing in the middle of a fight, but it would be better if I didn't have to.

It worked OK for me. I had one or two problems with conversations randomly restarting, and I seem to recall having a little trouble at the start. Did you try adjusting your settings to DirectX9? I had trouble with another game trying to use a later version, but reverting back to DirectX9 seemed to help for both of these games.

Not many bugs for me, just one funny one where after combat a particular companion will be selected and no other options besides right click to talk are available. PC version.

Snap to mouse when using AOE spells/abilities is pretty annoying. I don't want to plant that fireball on that dude, I want to blast him and his cronies to the Makers doorstep. This and the sticky camera make for very awkward combat at times. Especially in confined spaces. Having a detachable camera and a non snap to cursor would go some way to redeeming the combat.

The story is... rather biased by almost forcing the player to hate mages. You can't possibly deny this, it's a bloody party out there, and Hawke didn't get the memo. The complete bull-headedness of the major players is a little sad since there isn't supposed to be a "big-bad" in the story. Just the rise to power. And a headdesk at the ending. Where's my power?!?!

Fortitude. Probably deserves a topic of its own. This stat would be fine if waves didn't drop enemies behind your lines, far away from the warriors and right behind your squishies. And then to add insult to injury your squishie gets thrown against a wall and beaten senseless. Very uncool. Tactical positioning lasts only as long as the first encounter, after that waves ensures tactics go out the window. On normal this is no great issue, but on Hard things become noticeably trickier as a fight goes on. I don't even want to imagine Nightmare.

The hands, specifically those fingers. Ye gads I'd never want to have fingers like those. These folks are supposed to be young! What in the name of all that is holy have they been dipping their fingers in to make them as shriveled as they are? This will never be the most important issue but whenever someone shows their hands I cringe.

It can never be said enough, the new darkspawn look atrocious. Where'd the Hurlocks get their standard issue coif and skeletor face?

I have been playing Bioware games since the late 90s. Have you even heard of Baldur's Gate? Let alone played it?

Yet you take time to reply? Aww, you do care! Anyway, continue on.

This isn't a thread about sharing thoughts, it's for constructive criticism. Saying "I hate this game, it sucks." isn't constructive. There's quite a few threads to share your thoughts in.
