First I'll say I loved Origins and I like DAII so I feel it's a step back and not forward like a sequel should be, I'm still enjoying it though.

- Re-use of dungeons, need to see many different areas not the 2 or 3 that are used everywhere.
- Waves of enemies
- Not being able to put armor on companions, would like the option to upgrade their normal armor like it is also but also have the option to outfit them as we like. Also more armor, not that much. Character specific armor drops would be good...different armors that would be fitting to each companion.
- Being in Kirkwall most of the time, I want to go to many different places. We also hear about places like Orlias, Antiva, Tentiver and others but we've still never been there...for the next game we need to hit all those places as well as back to Ferelden ;)
- Have junk mean something, make certain items useless and others worth something or use to build special weapons or armor.
- The companion quests aren't bad but I'd still like to talk to my companions whenever I want much like in Origins.
- The Darkspawn designs in origins were awesome, please go back to those.
- I like the combat but I think it would be great if it was a combination origins gameplay and DAII instead of feeling just hack and slash...I do like how the attacks and such felt like it had impact.
- I don't mind dialogue wheel but with the line of text sometimes it feels like Hawke will say something different than the option I picked.
- I wish DAII also had the skills to pick from when you level up like coercion
- Importing saves didn't do enough although I guess it's expected since it is different stories and characters...still think much more could of been done.

- Overall I think Origins had the better cast of companions, I usually have never cared for dwarfs but I love Varric! He must return. Varric to me is like my running mate. Others I liked a lot were Meryl and Isabella.
- I really like main characters with a voice, not a fan of mutes.
- skill trees were great as well as the rivalry system
- graphics could be better, on consoles anyway.
- some of the male hairstyles in create a character were bad, it was like they were missing patches of hair. It made me go to default hawke.

- For DAIII I'd love to see my warden come back and join up with hawk and be involved in a much bigger story that involves the world instead of one city, travel to all the places we hear about but never see. Much better importing saves where things matter. Bring back Morrigan, Alistair, Zevran, Leliana, Varric, Isabela and Meryl along with your warden and Hawke...would be an epic cast.

I mostly noted negatives which means the rest is positive or I can't remember anything else lol, also a lot of the things others have mentioned I agree with but like I said in the beginning still a good game but it could of been great.

I will say I liked the dialogue options for the player character - how they identified if you were trying to be nice, mean, or funny. Sometimes in DAO you couldn't really tell the difference.

The combat is way better in DA2 than DAO, much more action, which I like. I also like how passive, sustained and activated abilities have different shapes to help identify them.

One thing I didn't like was the looting. I would say most people have a tendency to "Take all" items when given the chance, and a lot of times you get a few junk items. The junk items have been covered before, but I wonder why there is no option to go directly to your inventory FROM the thing you're looting - like in DAO. That was incredibly handy when you ran out of inventory space, and now you have to hit Start>Inventory>inventoryType. While it may not take very long, it is tedious for those who love to loot anything and everything.

In addition to that, and elaborating on the junk items - why not have a "SELL FOR [X]" (where X is the amount of Gold/Silver/Copper that you can sell that junk item for) somewhere in the item description. That way I can tell if I'm throwing away something that's cheap or something that may be worth a semi-substantial amount.

this game is sexist ( if thts how u spell it) if you dont make your main charachter a Sword and board tank, who else can you make a sword and board tank? o wait ONLY AVELINE! also wtf is with companion armor. ****tiest idea ever. i could have made this game better than you guys did, get some ideas from fans before you go and selflishly add and remove ideas. you had it right the first time Dragon age 1 is the best game ever made, no wonder your designer quit. you got a bunch of noobs making the game now. wtf is your problem bioware, you guys working with funcom these days?- i have 5 words for you bioware. My thought after playing for a hour....

How the hell did I get 4 companions so fast? I love meeting people along the journey..also, these companions are really boring and have no original skills or talents. I remember the excitement of meeting someone new in the Final Fantasy and Baldur's gate series. They would have unique weapons and attacks that were really fun.

I don't believe Bioware would purposely sabotage their own game. I understand this is a troll post, but you would have to understand they wouldn't of made the game the way it is, if they thought people would dislike it.  They must of gotten the impression from group of fans that the idea's would work or was worth the effort to complete. With some constructive .. in some manner criticism would help actually improve it for  future fans.

What should have been done was the continued story from the first game and your warden.
I believe Awakening was just a cheap cash in and shouldn't have been made in the first place.
What happened was the company as a whole wanted to target a boarder market in order to make more money, so for Dragon Age II the game should have been it's own series of games, while Dragon Age should be the story of your warden (as the warden is the player and the player's story expands in the game).

I made a post a couple of weeks back on another thread about how the sexist card is thrown around so much it no longer has any meaning. Anything and everything is now sexist to people. Good to know now I have an example of a meaningless sexist card use, even if this is a very bad attempt at trolling.

I agree with every point you posted. The biggest blow for me was without a doubt the lack of character dialog with your NPC companions though. I pushed myself through this game, even though I didn't really enjoy the repetitive wave based combat and environments, simply for the characters and story. However, as I kept going I started realizing how much less character interaction there was in this game compared to other Bioware games and found myself very disappointed. The story was still enjoyable even though I really didn't feel like my decisions ever mattered outside of a few minor choices which didn't impact the end game all that much.

As a side note though I am grateful to see Bioware employees reading and responding to this thread. Dragon Age 2 was overall a let down and I am glad that the fan criticism isn't being written off anymore as being posted by cry-babies who haven't really played the game or were just too in love with Origins. I would have loved this game despite the changes to the RPG elements if it still felt like a complete Bioware game. As it is it just feels like a rushed and failed experiment to me that should have been marketed as an expansion or several pieces of DLC rather than a sequel.

O.K., so here I go on my overall thoughts after my first complete playthrough. Please note also, I am a console gamer. Look through my profile for registered games if you don't believe me.

1). Maps: Every cave being the same every time was rather annoying. Not as annoying as every house in Hightown being the same, but annoying nonetheless. I can understand some reuse sometimes maybe, but it was a lot overboard. My true dislike however came from the dead ends. Instead of a finished wall, either a door was there but wouldn't do anything (not even say it was locked) or a stone slab was put in your way for the cave areas. It didn't look anything close to polished.

2). Graphics: My main issue here is again the enviroment not looking polished. The main characters looked well done, and everyone in a conversation looked fine to me. Only one, visitor of elven decent, from another game looked a bit different then my memory of him. I thought he had just become anorexic.

3). Setting/Enviroment: As this story was about the Champion of Kirkwall, the story happening in and around said city seems reasonable. My complaint here is the non-reaction of NPCs. I could get into bloody combat not five feet from them and instead of running or reacting in any way, they stayed there doing the exact same thing both before and after the combat. They wouldn't even comment on it afterward.

4). Companions: All of my companions save one felt well flushed out and designed. Even if I didn't like my returning funny man from Awakening becoming the party pooper, he still seemed like a firmly established and developed character. The only exception to this was our DLC companion. And it could be I just didn't like or use him enough to get a feel for him.

5). Conversations/Interaction: I truly enjoyed the return of party sniping and interchange as I ran around. Was every exchange a golden gem of greatness, no. Then again every talk I have with my real friends isn't pure gold, so it was good. My problem here was similar to Awakenings. I could only talk to my companions at specific times or for certain interactions. I missed being able to talk to someone as I ran through areas, or simply having a party camp type area to talk to people. Even if I had been able to go to their designated hangout/home in the game and talked to them at any time would have been fine.

6). Combat: Button mashing is bad. Auto attack is good. People exploding because it looks cool is bad. Physics is good. My companions walking off in the middle of combat for no apparent reason is bad. Me occasionally not being able to target an enemy, any enemy, is bad. This simplification of combat brought to you by Dragon Age 2.

7). Customization: Where oh where did my companions armors go? They wear the exact same thing all game and hopefully I get their upgrades. Meanwhile I am in a regualr stae of change and design in my armor. I want my companions using armor I can't. Where are my companions specializations? I liked every companion having one tech tree specifically for them, and maybe if that tree auto counted for their first specialization I would have understood. They need the second specialization still. Where is my dual weilding warrior? Where is my two handed weapon rogue? Why can't my companions change from the preset they were given? He started out using a two handed blade and can't figure out sword and shield. Sure she can use two daggers but archery is beyond her. At least there was the potion (in DLC) that I could reset their points and tech trees, but I still couldn't make an entire party of archers or dual weilders. I like being able to make a diverse party if I want or make a party of everyone using sword and shield if that is my desire. I could not make my party anything I wanted to, this bothers me.

8). Storyline: I liked the overall storyline. I kind of wish the overall plot had played a part throught the game, but I can understand it not doing so. When you first arrive in Kirkwall, you are a regular person, nothing significant to your name. No reason for people in high ranking positions to trust you with their problems yet. Also some problems do take years to fully realize themselves. Maybe if each act hinted at the overall problems still developing or to come, but overall it was good.

9). Menus: I liked my companions reacting when chosen or removed from the party. I liked going though my inventory to use the books I got when I wanted to and not auto use. The junk part of my inventory, I kind of like being told that something is worthless and I never have to worry it might be a quest item. However, I dislike fighting people in Act 3 and still getting a moth eaten scarf. Maybe if I ran into more real items, it would be better.

10). Crafting: Another one I like both ways. I enjoyed collecting mounds of craftable resources to make potions and poisons. I also like the fact that I can make multiple versions of high end items without worrying about running out of supplies. My problem here would be there is only one health potion. No lesser, greater, potent, and the like. I guess I can live with that.

Overall it was a decent RPG in my opinion. The problem lies in it being the sequel to a truly fantastic and epic RPG. I honestly believe, as mentioned by a friend, if this game had come out as another expansion vs. a sequel people would have fewer complaints. Still the game feels rushed. Like someone had to get it out now and couldn't wait. Quality games take time and quality RPGs even more so. Maybe someone should remind EA that not every game is Madden which needs a yearly sequel to keep people playing it.

Just want to say I agree heartily with all of the points in the OP post.  I would add one thing, which kind of follows allong the lines of the 2-stat requirement on gear.  Skill allocations are too restrictive.

Apparantly, it's not enough to have a level requirement on skills, or even level requirement and specific skill prerequisites.  You have level requirements, specific skill prerequisites, and you require that a certain number of points have been spent in the tree.  The upshot of all that is that you are shoehorned into certain character builds.  Each skill "tree" could easily be replaced with a linear selection of abilities that you pick one at a time.  All of those requirements restrict you in such a way that you have almost no decisions to make when you pick your skills.  I'd like to see more freedom to choose the skills I want in the future.

im not here to cover bases already marked.

Im not sure how to make this constructive, but in conerns the Voice Acting. This for me, was dull, I dont know how you guys go about recording, but If i had a guess, I would say the 'director' failed to get the Voice Actors fully understanding the emotions behind some of their lines.
Male Hawkes voiced reaction to hearing news concerning his mother was emotionless. Yet you can almost tell when the VA has been told leter in the dialog to feel upset, and suddenly the VA very late in that dialog does sound great.

But overall, I felt the choice to voice most characters with what sounded like classicly trained, middleclass shakespearian society members was off. That accent has to be one of the most boring accents England has. And why have people 'pretend' to be Northen English or poor impressions of cockneys when there must surely be some REAL voiceactors in America/Canada actully from those parts of the UK and they can voice them.

Im not anti English btw, as I am English

my opinion...probably not much original but still genuine.

well its the first time i am bored with a BW game :|
For me its identical to Mass Effect 1 (game i loved so much) without the best thing from that game.

What i dislike:
-first i don't think that bioware should release too many similar games...ME is ME and there is no pont in cloning the game just changing the setting i prefer 2 different games so i can buy both ._.
-second there is no match between ME setting and plot and DA2 that seems absolutely inferior.
-third ME was voiced in italian DA2 is not...i know english but ME1 dubbing was so great ._.
-fourth the hybrid battle system is awful and boring to me, at least ME was full arcade.
-then as i said i'd like more freedom don't care about graphic but give more freedom ._. not small corridors and few ppls to speak with >_<
-but worst thing of all >_> really it seems unfinished and dlc oriented....i am quite happy to pay for a dlc that ADD something new, but i will never buy any dlc that seems to me a cut part of the game >.> that seems the habit of recent games....well sometimes it looks too much and ppl may be displeased with that .....

Well there were things i liked a lot also:
-soundtrack was very very good
-character personality was very interesting expecially varric, and Justice/anders...isabela had a great design but quite boring in the dialogues, fenris ewww well i don't like final fantasy and don t want emo visual J characters in bw games.
-liked character editor
-liked hawke house

In few words
For DA3 i'd like a game that doesn t remind me another series, expecially because it would be probably inferior to the original in many aspects as it happened with DA2 ._.

I know this post will mostly be echoing the complaints that so many others have already voiced but here is where I believe the game fell short.

- Introduction to characters. Not only do most of the companions join Hawke for the most trivial reasons, but we don't get a real chance to get to know Hawke before the action starts. I would have liked some dialog between Hawke and his family before the blight reached lothering and then have the pace of the game pick up as they try to escape for their lives. I would have liked to have seen the companions join due to some compelling reason, not just oh it is Tuesday and I have nothing better to do (exaggerated but really there reasons aren't developed very well.).

-Companion Equipment. Perhaps this is the smallest criticism I have but it is still a point which I was disappointed with. I enjoyed the ability to equip whichever armor I liked on my companions in DA:O and was hoping for more of the same with DA:2. For any future installments of the game series I would enjoy this feature returned, it would even be an okay compromise to keep the same in game animation, or limit the type of armor for a companion dependent upon what act or part of the game you are on. Say for Carver in act 1 he can only wear chain types of armor but allow the player to equip him with several different chain armors found in the first act.

-The endless amounts of junk. I don't mind the junk, it seems like a fun idea but if it could be limited to stuff that people would still spend money on. In real life you can recycle aluminum cans for money in some places, others consider them junk. Perhaps there should be certain areas that could buy certain types of junk but other shop keepers wont buy it because to them it is just junk. Maybe someone in dust town would like some torn pants because they don't have any clothes/fabric or much money to purchase it with so they will buy/trade for the torn pants but no other merchants will purchase it.

-Generic item names. I thought there were too many generic item names such as boots or rings or amulets. It made me feel like someone was supposed to come up with more unique item names and descriptions but just ran out of time and let it as is.

-Reused maps/areas. Okay I am in a dungeon, there is a room on the mini map straight ahead, I see a doorway ahead, it is blocked by a gray mass, Seriously, there couldn't be a way to use the same area but change the map to not show the areas which weren't used at that particular time? It just gets frustrating and adds to the feeling that the game was somehow rushed and left incomplete.

-The waves of bandits. I understand the need for non boss type enemies in the game I just wish it was done a little differently. I don't think you need to fight wave after wave of the same type of mob, perhaps as the levels increase you fight different types of mobs who are stronger and harder to fight without the need of twenty of them.

-The story/setting. I am enjoying the story of the game and I love Kirkwall, I just wish there were more areas to visit. I know the story centers around the city but I loved traveling to all of the different places in Origins.

-The combat. I am playing on the PS3 and enjoy the combat, I can see where some people who are playing on PC may not like it but it works for me, more entertaining combat then Origins.

-The dialog. Although there have been times when what Hawke says is not what I thought he was going to say based on the summary on the wheel; I am overall enjoying the new dialog system. I like that the hero is voiced and the writing seems well done.

-Art redesign. I love the way the Qunari look in DA:2, it seems like the different races were redesigned so that they are very noticeably different from each other which I like. I do not like the redesign of the darkspawn, they don't look very threatening.

I don't want it to sound like I hate the game, I don't, I enjoy playing it. I would rate the game a 7/10 and I am sure I will be completing several playthroughs. However, I would like to see some changes if this franchise is going to continue, perhaps a blending of DA:O inventory, companion stories, and scope of travel; with the dialog and combat of DA:2.

I think I pinpointed something that was bugging me about it that I couldn't put my finger on but knew was 'off'.............
One of things I think most of us enjoy in BioWare games is the sense of non linear progression from being able to play a game (visit different towns, worlds) the way we want. DA:O being used as a perfect example again - We know we have to go to Denerim, to Orzammar, the circle, to the Brecilian Forest... but we can do it how we want.

I always do the circle first to pick up Wynne for healing (unless I am a mage) but if I want to do the Dalish plot first I can (I love that) Same goes for ME - you could go to Therum first but equally you could leave it til much later and find Liara a bit stir crazy.

The whole 3 ring circus........... sorry, 3 act show leaves me depressed as a gamer tbh, it is constantly there poking me with the *percentage of completion* stick :crying: and I get mild 'end of game', sadness when I know it will all be over soon. I loved the open ended way you could play ME2 and leave some things to do after the suicide mission, there was no reason that this couldn't have been implemented in DA II in fact it would have been perfect for this game.....

For the most part DAII is a great RPG, but their were some fundamental design decisions that I think could be improved upon. Some are actually changes to stuff that worked in Origins:

Spawning enemies: Way overused. For someone trying to play tactically it becomes ridiculous and breaks immersion. I don't mind it if it's used sparingly to keep the player on their toes or if the context is correct (e.g. corpses on the floor or smaller enemies comming out of holes in walls), but every battle could feel like an endless wave of spawning enemies more suitable for God of War. More battles should have had a pre-determined number of enemies or alternative methods to challenge the player.

Combat/Battle view: Generally, the battle animations and pace was an improvement over Origins. However, why was the tactical overhead view removed? It became far more annoying to place spells and coupled with the endless waves of enemies was just generally a pain as you couldn't see where they were spawning without constantly refering to the mini-map. The overhead view should be used in all versions, even if you can only use it when the game is paused.

Companions: For the most part, they were well-written and fleshed out. However, I like the chance to speak to them about the events taking place at anytime rather than when the game deems it fit. For instance, in my first Origins playthrough I'd always talk to Leilani when entering a new area to get her take on it. Keep the companion quests appearing in the journal, but adding more frequent dialogue options would be great. Also, Merrill didn't seem to react much after the end of her companion quest; seemed a bit odd.

Reused maps: I understand the need to reuse art assets, but in DAII it felt like entire dungeons and levels were copy & pasted. I don't want to enter an identical cave with an added door block in set areas. Even the mini-maps were identical and showed areas that weren't traversable for that particular dungeon.

classes: I liked that the classes were fairly distinct, but I'd also like the ability to create multi-class style characters. The Arcane Warrior specialisation in Origins was great (although I understand why it was removed, a suitable replacement would have been nice). In games like Neverwinter Nights, I used to play as a Paladin/Sorceror, but in DAII there is nothing like that. Even the Ranger specialisation was removed which could have been a nice Warrior/Rogue type character.

Customising companions armor: The change to an armor upgrade system was odd and made especially annoying by the fact enemies and chests kept giving me armor I couldn't use. I'm not sure why it was simplified in this way when we still have to decide accessories anyway.

Play area: I understand that the whole game is set in Kirkwall and the surrounding area, but it never feels that huge. The city should be a huge thriving hub. More areas (with additional quests), even if they're still in Kirkwall, would have been great.

As I said before, the game's great, and I enjoyed the story. I really want to see what happens with Flemeth and Morrigan though and what happened to the Grey Warden/Hero of Fereldan. I think part of the problem with DAII is that after the epic (albeit generic) story of Origins, the smaller, more personalised story of DAII feels a bit like a stop gap to the wider and ongoing legend of Flemeth and Morrigan. Maybe that was the plan from the start :P

1. As a female gameplayer I'd really really like to have the possibility to choose the body language of my female character. Warriors stand differently than rogues, that kind of thing.

I played a female warrior and I *do not* understand why oh why she prounced around like a ballerina when I let her just stand idle for a while. That is SO not warrior-like. And she's doing all that covered in heavy armor, really?? I understand that that is appropriate and even looks cute for female rogues and maybe even mages, but a female tank doing that weird thing with her toes ... it irritated me so much.

It wasn't like that in DAO, warriors stand like warriors regardless of gender there, so I originally thought this was a bug. I couldn't find any reference to such a bug, however, so I'm gonna assume it wasn't a bug. But hell, Aveline didn't bounce around like that!!! Why did I have to??

So, yeah. That's my biggest irritation. In DAO sometimes I would just let my warrior stand around so that I can admire her. Here I couldn't do that in real time because she'd start behaving like a silly little girl in no time.

2. another thing is my companions' armor looked very pretty and detailed, but my own armor looked like it was painted on my skin especially on the chest, all decorations were totally flat, not even a hint of volume in any of the ornaments. That looked very very dated. In stark contrast to the city. So, I kind of assumed that too was a bug. But again, haven't found anything about such a bug, so I guess it's not.

3. i loved how enemies would appear from all sides, not just the direction you're going towards, but had this been a real rpg involving tactics, finding yourself literally surrounded by enemies would make the usual tactics very...unsuccessful. It's not like you can hide your mage in the back, because soon enemies will apear right next to your mage and cut him/her down before you have time to run accross the map to save them. I'm not saying that enemies coming from different directions in waves should change, but then we should have the tactics to deal with that. In a future game that emplyes tactics, that is. Oh and I guess I'm saying that my mages here were too buff, spells are too strong. Having 2 mages in the party essentially means that nobody save for the High Dragon stands a chance against us.

4. It's not humanly possible to get attached to a character who only shows up for 5 seconds and then dies. So, when my mother and Bethany kept going on and on about Carver, not only didn't I care, but it was irritating. Shut up about that 5 second guest already, he's been dead since the beginning of the story, who cares about him!!! By the end of Act 1 I don't even remember what he looks like. And yet people keep bringing him up like I'm supposed to care, and yet I don't, which breaks immersion for me.

5. In general, fantasy with purpose is superior to fantasy with no defined purpose. Rise to power, ok. But rise to power to do what? Just sit there and go eh heh heh I'm powerful? What's my original motivation here, money?? That's not very epic. Protect my family? I just met them, I don't care about them yet. Maybe at some point I felt compeled to replay something so that Bethany doesn't die, but that was that one moment which doesn't justify me staying in Kirkwall for 10 years.

I'll end on a positive:

It is SO awesome that you made all 4 love interests available to female and male characters. I don't get the criticism some people have made, that "not everyone is bi". Yes, of course, not everyone is, but how does that affect your gameplay? If you're a straight woman and you want to romance the men, go ahead. If you're a straight guy and you want to romance the women, go head. It can't seriously bother anyone that the *option* exists for male characters to romance the male companions, etc. ? That'd be like saying "not everyone is evil", so then there should be no evil dialog options, or what??? Choice, there has to be a choice, and I like that you have the guts to put choice in there.

this game is sexist ( if thts how u spell it) if you dont make your main charachter a Sword and board tank, who else can you make a sword and board tank? o wait ONLY AVELINE!

oh, please. Do you know how many games I've played where the only tanks are always guys and there isn't a single female tank? Oh, wait, it's ALL OF THEM. Unless you vocally and loudly complained about the lack of female tanks in ALL previous games then I can't take your complaint seriously here.

(disclaimer: English is not my main language so please be gentle)
I really enjoy the game so far.  I think the new fighting system is pretty solid and fun. I like the way the story unfolds, it's fresh and remembers me a bit of the Mignola version of "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" with those big ellipses. I LOVE Hawke as a character and would definitively want to play him again.
What I don't like:
re-used maps: I know the story revolves around the city but there is too little locations and they all looked the same. I like the new art direction but I though dongeons and areas were more detailed and believable in DA:O.

The deep roads looked huge and interessting and had an epic vibe. Now they look like small corridors...
The forest looked luxuriant and rich. Now it's a small walk in a park...
The Andraste ashes temple was amazing, now you kill petty thieves in the same small alley.

The city seems empty and lifeless: Come on ! At night I am attacked by 15 assassins every 3 minutes but during the day I walk in those empty street where people are just standing there doing nothing. the city in BG2 looked more alive and it was 10 years ago. You should take example on games like "the witcher" and "Assassin's creed" for that matter.
Combat difficulty: I like the way the combat works. I started on hard as a mage and  I found it sufficiently challenging, except some bosses were you have to start doing silly stuff such as kiting... For a casual game I would have loved to have the equivalent of hard difficulty for mobs and normal for bosses. (which is what I do by changing the difficulty level often, which is a bit annoying).I would like an incentive to play in nightmare mode too. I did my insane run on ME2  just to complete every achievement. Some special rewards along the way would be welcomed.

In a way I hope that DA3 will be a good mix of the combat system and more personal story of DA2 with the epic scope of DA:0.

Thanks for reading.

Companions

Wasn't too bothered about limited outfits, but maybe instead of just one outfit with a couple of upgrades (that still looks exactly the same after a decade) , you could find several different outfits for each companion on your travels. Would make them look a bit more interesting and give a greater sense of customisation

this is the exact same idea I had a few pages back! nice to know there's someone out there who thought the same thing as me lol. Great minds do think alike

Yep. I have to say I am totally in line with you guys. I was not troubled by the lack of customization. In fact in ME2 I liked the upgrade system. I may be a woman but jeez I hate shopping and trying out outfits. I liked in ME 2 that the outfit unlocked based on the loyalty. Maybe in this case it could change based on rival/friend IF you absolutely have to get another look... like story bound upgrades - not that goddamn clothes shopping in inventory window-
but then again. I have learned to live with the fact that I am a failure as a woman.

 Me too. And I like your idea of a different outfit unlocking when Hawke maximises Friend/Rival status.

On the Friend/Rival issue, though - I have found that I'm struggling to get out of the 'middle' with a couple of characters (namely Isabela and Merrill) - I seem to constantly get +5 friendship, then a while later +5 rivalry and so on. I'm doing my best (finding their gifts etc) but it's quite difficult. And with Merrill especially, I keep getting some really unexpected rivalry points, when I'm actually trying quite hard for the friendship path. For example, I'm really nice and supportive to her during her Act 2 quest, and yet somehow ended up with a net gain of +10 rivalry. Sigh.

So yes, while I think that this is the best companion 'influence' system that Bio has come up with, it might still need a little work.

While I'm here, can I just say again how much I'm enjoying this game? I love how having a particular companion present can change the outcome of a conversation/quest. Glorious <3

Another addition:
Exploration is a core element in an RPG. While ME2 works without it, the DA universe is screaming for being explored. Finding little mysteries along the path to be solved. That kind of stuff.
If you have time for those next time, it would be greatly appreciated.
I mention ME2 because a lot of features and guidlines were incorporated. But that was an action game with RPG elements where this one is supposed to be an RPG.

To extend my old post!

1) Side quests and Secondary Quest: Both seemed like filler, you ran here killed 10 guys gave them a banana, quest was done, collected your moss-eaten scarf and were off. Side quest should be just as epic as the main storyline, playing an impact on the future of the game or at least your own character developement.  Should find some very unique and exciting (non-generated) gear off enemies, just shouldn't push the narrative forward like the main quest.  Maybe fewer of them just more depth to the ones you're doing, few short ones are expected, there just seemed to be so many.

2) Companion quests were good, maybe much more character devolopement, but they were more then one set up ninja mobs, they had 2-3!  I can't really go into detail without spoiler issues.

3) Main Story This is probably more of a personal observation just felt short, even when I did all of the other content I could find before leading to the main one, still vastly quicker then the other RPG's namely Baldur's Gate 1&2 (yet to see a game even hold a candle to that game so thumbs up Bio!) Dragon Age: Origins.
