I'd love to see a paragon/renegade system like in Mass Effect so that decisions carried some weight. For whatever reason Dragon Age has never embraced this. I'd also love interrupts.

Noooooooo, ME2 handled it very badly, game breakingly badly if you weren't black or white in your choices. DA:O works far better because sometimes good people do bad things and bad people can have moments of purity and DA:O was way more fun because I wasn't always thinking ''Oh noes, I have to be nice to this a**hole if I eventually want to talk Tali and Legion down'' < exaggeration, but you get the idea. I loved not having a moral compass in DA:O.

I`d like to say something about the enemies in DA2.

I can see why some people see the game as more of an action game than a RPG considering the endless waves of mindless minions swarming in. Sending in more waves or simply giving them more HP/damage on higher difficulties is just plain annoying (same for those stretched out boss fights).
Solutions:

- Give enemies face by adding skill-sets for them. They should be able to do the same things your characters do. I don`t think it`s difficult to produce different tactic sets for the few different minions that appear (let them start exploiting class combos and use auras on Hard or Nightmare for extra fun) .
- Give them a level as well as stats and skills according to it and it should be fine.
Fights would be more challenging and less annoying that way.

Someone pointed out that enemies still use the old DA:O attack animations while PCs use the new set. I don`t know the exact difference since I have not played DA:O yet, but if it`s more than just the new looks (e.g. increased attack speed) I think it is a mistake as stated above.

- Focus more on the main story than on the side quests, in DAII it seemed to be the other way around (there was hardly any main plot till the second half of Act2).

- Bring back companion conversations, getting to know them only in a handful of quests with no possibility of speaking to them otherwise is not a great choice IMO. In DAO you could talk to them anytime which helped to build a connection to a character ( But I really liked that there are more companion quests this time! )

- Remove the junk loot, I never understood the point of so many useless items that you can do nothing with but sell for next to nothing. I try to just not take any of the junk, but unfortunately some of it starts quests.

I find the battles to be overwhelming. Maybe i am getting old but stuff is just happening too fast. The Pause is nice and all but i mean the execution of orders is simply happening too fast. I have problems following what is going on all at once and it looks like total chaos. I prefered slower-paced battles more like DA:O was.

Also i wished there were less numerous enemies to fight at once and more battles with maybe 7-8 targets that would take mroe time to take down and would be using mostly the same skills than our chars and having different selection of weapons and armors.

I also miss the ability to outfit my whole crew.

I miss the ability to zoom out and have a top-down view over the situation. Especially since it is looking so chaotic with that many enemies to fight at a time.

I actually find the dialogues not that bad but i have a big problem with the battle system that i had not before when playing DA:O. I always were bad at FPS and fast action games so i guess DA2 is not for me.

I made a mistake buying this. Im gonna complete the game playing Casual just to unfold the storyline but i am pretty much done with the fighting. Simply put, it is WAY too fast for me.

Just my opinion of course.

dialogue:

The wheel is an interesting tool but badly use. Choosing your dialogue base on the icon break the immersion it's oversimplified. Worst, the tree basic choice (good, joke, bad) have zero impact on the game/quest, They are choice who are not choice, Whatever you choose the quest will be the same, 99% of the time, it has no impact on how you will finish the quest there is no good or bad end . The 1% left are mostly esthetic.

I agree with you 90%, these are the exact reasons for why I was disappointed with DA2.
Except for two points:
I slowly grew to like the new elven design.

And I liked the voiced protagonist. Just wish BW would pull out the old "adopted" background so you could play other races with a voiced protagonist (strange accent for an elf/dwarf but still belivable).

In Sweden we have a saying (don't know if it's international, and I'm paraphrasing):
Many small streams, eventually turns into a river.
Things added up and eventually I realized I was disappointed with DA2.

It's a good game, just not what I wanted DA2 to be.

I agree with the original poster to 100%. This is exaclty how I feel about the game, it's not some minor issues but extremely major ones that really affect the gameplay and experience. If BioWare would've spent more time on DA2 creating additional dungeons and various areas in combination with additional races this game would've been so much better in many peoples eyes.

Even though I feel that the story isn't really good it's still acceptable, the fact that you've recycled areas is definately NOT!

I just bought Mass Effect 2, hopefully this is something I won't encounter there but from the looks of the ME2-forums it looks even worse with audio-issues and other malfunctions. I sincerely think that Bioware need to reconsider their entire department because right now there is only one way, and it's the one down.

Thanks Tony, I think that saying is a perfect description of my feelings during the game, I didn't dislike it immediately, but by the third Act I was rushing to finish it because I couldn't stand it by then, and I completed it feeling very empty.

I guess the elven design is subjective.  I certainly appreciate the move to make them look unique and kudous to Bioware for the effort, I think most can agree we don't want them to be generic.  But here they just look odd in my opinion.    But hey, that's just an opinion, and everyone is entitled to theirs.

I'm sure most of what I had issues with have been addressed already, so I'll just say this:

Music. Maybe I'm injured from constantly having music in my ears, but a lot of the time I itched to play a track in the background because it was so quiet. The menu screen in particular was dreadfully boring because of this, which was a shame because I spent a lot of time arguing with myself over which abilbities to choose and what gear to wear and so on. My ears were not happy, I say!
And I'm still sad that the nekkid romance scenes were a lie... :crying:

That said: LOVE the antiepic story and the mentally unsteady companions. Nothing like a daily dose of depressingness.

I don't know why people take being forced to play as a human as something personal.

"Oh I'm forced to play as a human? Gee thanks Bioware I guess none of my decisions mattered in Origins. Everyone loves to play as a human." (someone said this a few pages back, maybe not verbatim but give or take a few words that was what was said)

Would it really make sense for an elf to become a noble in a place where slavers are rampant and people still hate elves? No. In a world where there are many different races, there are bound to be people who had an impact on the world who were from one set race. Just because you can't choose a race doesn't mean anything bad has happened to the gaming series. Especially if it's the first game in the series to do this.

Bah I knew what I was going to say about this last night, but I forgot.

I think it is interesting that Bioware thinks the changes can entice CoD fans. I think their research was faulty. I don't know anyone (besides myself) who plays CoD for the single player experience. So I think they are barking up the wrong tree.

I'm not sure if this has been side already, but one thing that has been echoed by my fiancee and myself is that it really felt like one big side-quest.

It is what I didn't like, but also what I loved about the game. I loved doing all the extra things, but sometimes it did get a little dragged down by re-used maps. Though because it felt like this it was hard for me to... Care about certain characters. Or really events playing out. Beyond the companion quests, which I think were amazing and the companions themselves were terrific, the quests just didn't give me a lot of immersion or really felt like it tied into the story at all.

For example I will use Mass Effect 2. Obviously it was a different way to tell a story, but a majority of the side-quests you did actually played into the main story of the game. In Dragon Age II it seemed a few kinda had something to do with being a Champion, or in ACT III the rising tensions but not many.

And the rising tensions is another thing. I don't think we even see Mereidith until the end of the second act, or for that matter Osario. Myself personally I knew I wasn't going to be on Merreidith's side and we heard rumors about her, but it really just didn't have... Tension. Like she wasn't really a solid antagonist. In origins we saw Loghain from the beginning, we'd have cut scenes were we saw him doing stuff, we new he was effecting a lot. We felt his betrayal right in the beginning.

Because Dragon Age II was told in a different way, I assume that could be part of why those things couldn't be done. Varric wasn't around Mereidith. But it lost something from it, once I was Champion I was like... Eh okay. I will fight you guys. Unlike in Origins were I was like "**** the blight! DAMN you Loghain! I wanna save these people!"

Then the only other thing is the idol, it played an important part in Dragon Age II, but you barely hear about it. Similar to my complaint above. It is important but it isn't there much, it isn't talked about much, and you don't know much about it. So when it actually does some things you are kinda like. "Oh, I see, huh." Not "Wow this thing is interesting, and gonna cause problems."

Then, for me, it was the look of the elves. How they look kinda just irked me a little bit. I like the bodies, I like the ears. Just how the brow was done, it really throws me off. Personally I was sadden to see how Zeveran looks now...Now this is just my opinion, but I think it doesn't look good at all. Wouldn't think twice about that threesome now, just gonna say no ;).

Everything else has mostly been said on the first post, on what I'd say. So I'd like to end it on something I really enjoyed. The Companions. I can't stress this enough, they were wonderful and amazingly written. The fact that they were unique models, I enjoyed. I thought it gave them more of a sense of 'hey that -IS- them". While I still loved the origins characters, I really love the Dragon Age II characters. They just felt so alive, the friendship and rivalry system worked very well in my opinion, and they had true personalities that they stuck to for the most part.

Overall:
I love the dialog wheel and the story. The new graphics are good.

Music: I kept heard music while traveling on the Wounded Coast that sounded like recycled discordant techno-crap from Mass Effect. why in the world did you not use the same great composer from DA: Origins?

Glitches. Good Lord. This is probably the buggiest game I've seen from Bioware. (Is EA Rot setting in?) It was clear that this was a rush job. I presume that it was so EA could hit some bottom line and so that what I'm sure will be extensive DLC will not step on the release of Mass Effect 3. I get the business thing, but EA/Bioware should respect it's fans more. I will buy pretty much anything that Bioware puts out.. but the more this happens, the likely that is to occur.

Achievements: Can you please stop screwing these up? Between Microsoft and EA, you've had near 6 years to figure this system out. I play a game once for the story. I continue the play the game to get achievements. And frankly, if you mess them up, I move on to another game and when I focus on such, I don't buy the DLC on yours...

Reuse of the same dungeons: I would have thought the long and vocal complaints about Mass Effect and the same bases on every planet in the Galaxy and your solution to that issue in Mass Effect 2 would have prevented something so obvious in Dragon Age 2. (except, of course, you were rushed) There is nothing I find more annoying than seeing something on the minimap I can't get to. It makes me think that I'm missing a switch or lever or something. If you're going to endlessly recycle maps, please at least do us the courtesy of not showing stuff that doesn't really exist.

So... from a console standpoint... DA2 is a good improvement on several items. The story and the uniquely crazy characters are what makes me like the game. It, this time, outweighs my complaints.

I also like the stories in the more recent ones (Modern Warfare, MW2, and Black Ops). though MW2 had the worst multiplayer thanks to the damn campers and n00b tubers Posted Image

But this is off topic. back to Dragon Age.

after 2 playthroughd I realized i was disappointed with the game ( for me ME/ME2 are some of THE best games), lot of good things - but not eneough. Maybe because I have come to expect a great deal from bioware. but maps reused ad nauseam and enemies spawning out of nowhere is tiresome. And how come fenris never cleans up his house (maybe having a corpse as a handy swordstand just inside the front door for years seems practical to him) it seems lazy of bioware - not Fenris mind you - its not his fault hes been programmed to live like a crackhead.

in the end the game felt like a precursor to the real game. And the whole schism/reformation thing going on might lead to conflict on a massive scale. So now im done with the tutorial could i have the real game please?

One minor issue: Tactics.

In NWN I could click the "Turn off AI button".

In DA1 I had to click each member and turn of their AI.

In DA2 I have to click each member, switch their attitude, switch their preset and then clear any leftover tactics. You have to be careful since certain settings turn off auto attack.

Why has it gotten harder and harder to turn off AI settings? Why can't I have the AI toggle from NWN/DA1?

Then maybe you should go back to Zelda and leave the real RPGs alone. All of this dumbing down for the masses will be the death of video games with any substance, mark my words. I remember when RPGs were almost an art form. Now a lot of them follow the flavor of the month.

And don't get me wrong, Zelda is a fun game, but all games do not need to be Zelda. The same goes for Mass Effect. Bioware is alienating a lot of their older fans by making everything the same. Dragon Age Origins was a breath of fresh air, and now it's like that air has been befouled by Mass Effect: The Dark Ages.

Might even be a point to make Dragon Age what it was in Origin and more, improve the RPG aspect of origins and then create a new genre of game(s).  Would make more sense to me personally to keep the genre's seperated, making an RPG and an Action RPG.  Giving the RPG fans and Action oriented fans to enjoy.  I would hope this would settle any contest with both sides complaining about opposite things leaving Bio probably like this -><_< <-- This may come at a cost and maybe Bioware can't afford it? Doubtful. This would hopefully draw in the crowd they seek as well since they can finally tune it to that specific wish without worrying about RPG(ers) thus keeping the fans of their original RPG's (which could very well grow vastly in size) and might bring more hardcore RPG seekers.

Sorry this isn't ment  to be a political/personal view.  Just makes more sense to me then experimenting on a game series that has already proven itself.

Now that I've finished the game, I feel I should add to the collected opinion:

:o-Things that were unequivocally good and should be in every RPG:
                -"Loot All" button.
-Compellingly flawed characters, especially your companions.
-Genuinely difficult decisions, often relating to said companions.
-Lots of reactivity to decisions in later quests.

B)-Things that I personally liked, but can see why some people didn't:
-Story that takes place over an extended period of time, with periodic jumps.
-classes with no overlapping talent trees.
                 -Ally armor system.

<_<-Things that I didn't like, but can see why they were done:
-Faster combat.  I'd prefer a focus on slower tactics to the "cool" factor of crowds of bad guys exploding.
-Enemy waves.  Not knowing the full extent of the battle really screws up any sort of strategic planning.
-Generic names for almost all equipment.   If there were fewer accessories and they all had unique                             names (DA:O style), I wouldn't have stopped caring about *Adjective* Belts halfway through the game.
-New art style, especially as regards the Darkspawn.  I felt the more realistic look of DA:O was much                          more relatable.

:(-Things that are universally bad:
-Endlessly repeated areas.  Seriously, I know there are a lot of side quests, but this went way too far.
-Quest bugs.  I expect a certain number of graphical or operational bugs in any new PC release.  But                            when there are quests that can't be finished or proceed in the wrong order, that's just unacceptable.

Re-used maps

...Really nothing to say here.
I don't mind them too much honestly.
Enemy encounters

Why do they randomly appear? In Origins, you guys had it perfectly. Behind a door they would come streaming, or when you turn the corner, bam! Darkspawn! Now, they just...apear. Literally. I've defeated many a wave quickly, just to see a warrior phase through like Star Trek! Very immersion breaking.
Actually I like this.  Having reinforcements appear jumping from a second floor .. though I did scream "I'm being attacked by ninjas!" and how they appear behind me when I thought I got them all.
Rogue-type enemies

They're so overpowered! They'll disappear and one shot my healer, or if they don't, they'll half my tank's health! And there seems to be no CD. Tsk Tsk!
Sadly if they change enemies they will change PCs ... just lock them down and get rid of them.  You can tell them easily with bows or two swords. . and Assassing next to their name heh.
Linearernessed...uh...Linearreerrr...It feels too one-track minded

Don't get me wrong, the style of story telling was very good, and the story itself was superior to Origins in my opinion, but it just felt...pushed along. In Origins, it felt like you could do anything at anytime. In this one, I just felt like I had to everything in this order.
My first playthrough was 50+ hours from looking for everything I could and reading everything.  Now that I have the guide, and seeing certain quests can only be unlocked after doing quest A etc, it is feeling that way too a bit.
The feel

It didn't feel as big as Origins, which is sort of a give-in. It's only based in Kirikwall, which is a setting that looks simply stunning, but it just has to have more places to go to. It loses it's epic feeling when you stay in one place. Expand upon it!
I definately vote for more places outside Kirkwall!
Enemy deaths

Some of these are just ludicrous. I stab a guy in the back and he explodes? What? This does feel a bit childish, and only leads to more immersion breaking.
YES  They are really rediculous looking like mannequins close up when they die.  I dunno if it's Varric or Sebby's crits but enemies always blow up for me.  Maybe tone it down some?
Junk

It's...junk? Yay? I just killed a dragon and I get...junk? This has potential, such as possible lore, backstories and stuff. You can even make it a sidequest. Rebuild an ancient Elven weapon or dwarven armor. The way it is now, it's just taking up disc space and has to go.
Of the 3 dragons I killed I always got quest items from them.  If you mean dragonlings they have junk yes ...
Auto-Attack

Nothing much to say, just need a toggle for some of us. I like both ways, though.
Which system do you play on?  I use PC and it seems fine to me.
Companions

What's that, Alistair? You're a bastard?! Oh noes! Leliana, that lady will KILL YOU! Add in some LI dialogue, BioWare! I really would've fallen in love with Isabella if she would've told me about life at sea, or Fenris if he would've explained about his Lyrium skin, or life in Tevinter. I think you guys did wonderful with the romance dialouge itself, but I would like to personally know them.
Then you missed something because Fenris DOES tell the story about his markings, Aveline's story is wonderful and so is Merrill's.  You must have skipped some companion quests or something ....
Armor

We need more of it! Give us armor sets. Origins had a ton. In this game, it's 3. Although this does add to the legendary feel of it, we just want more choices. Also, ditch the colorful basic plate armor. It doesn't feel warrior like at all. The kind from Origins was perfect, it had a great color. It's not the armor style, it's the color.
I mainly play mages so far, so I'm annoyed at all this armor I could be giving my companions but can't.  They still have dumb hoods though.
Friendly Fire toggle

Some of us want FF on levels like hard, where combat isn't as tough as NM, or as easy as normal. Personally, I hate it, but the people want what they want! :P
I always play on Casual so can't comment.
Darkspawn

I'm sort of sleepy while putting this, but these designs are horrible. The original were much better, and a lot scarier. What happened to Genlock and Shurlock? Did Hurlocks get jealous and slaughter them all? Just bring back the old designs and put back in Genlocks and Shurlocks.
Heh what's a Shurlock?  I kind of like the new art direction for them honestly, though they die quickly so I dont' rellay look to hard at them.
Interface

A lot of people don't like the new interface. It just doesn't scream RPG. It seems a bit too modern. The look of Origins was fantastic. Let's go back to it.
I just wish I could move things around.  I dunno, it seems hard for me to keep an eye on their health like it's in the wrong places or something.  I don't mind the interface much other than that.

From me ...:

The ability to remove the runes NOT DESTROY THEM!!!!

Sorry but this just ticked me off.  In Origins I could swap out my runes and use them again.  In DA2, they are DESTROYED if you put one over the other to replace.  This is just stupid.

Most of my other things were addressed already.

Also QUIT WITH THE OVERDONE ROMANCES! Its an action RPG for chirst's sake. We want more mature themed philosophical dialogues (like in Deus Ex, Planescape) than twilight rehashes.

I will comment a bit on this.

I watched the romances mainly on You Tube and decided to do Anders' first.  I am a bit .. disappointed.  Here's why.

1.  Some of the dialogue doens't match with what my character says.  It's too .. wooden.  If someone flirts with you act like you're affected!  Even Sebby did that!  Anders just said his line like he wasn't phased at all.

2.  Though I understand Anders is emotional .. the actual scenes were too tame companred to the others.  Yes the kiss he did was nice, but really ... Fenris and Isabella's were better from what I saw.  Though I wouldn't give up Anders for anything.

*sighs happily hugging Anders*

And well, doing Sebby's romance .. if one could call it that .. now.

It`s not like DA:O invented customization. DA2 just cut customization in so many ways (e.g. character creation, class variation, companions)

I dunno, everytime I think about awesome RPG experiences I end up with Baldur`s Gate in my mind. That`s why DA2 is such a disappointment to me.
But I take it as what it is - a failed experiment targeting a wideeeeeeeer audience by sacrificing the foundation.

Someone just wrote sidequests should have more connections with the main plot.
I think that`s not necessarily true or helpful.
Sidequest need to branch out and tell side stories in order to avoid linearity. They pretty much offer "recreational" time and opportunities to get a better understanding of the world. Of course this requires real sidequests(or rather sidestories) not the delivery-boy or fire-and-forget kind of quests we get nowadays.

For me an overall problem with DA2 is that named characters actually play no role in the game (e.g. those crafting dudes and vendors). They talk like one time in a cutscene and that`s it...
Quest givers (right term?) need personalty. Why would I work for a "Suspicious Woman" or "A Friend"?

The game does feel a bit rushed, it needs polish imo. I agree with the OP, just want to second what he said.
