Why do I have to kill everyone I encounter?

Like the topic says. In every encounter I kill people. Even people I don't want to kill, like the dalish clan in Merrils quest.. I reloaded that and managed to avoid the insane slaughter.

But now... I'm at Best served cold in Act 3. Hawke has spoken against Meredith publicly and said that he wants to kill her. I'm on a quest to help the first enchanter presumably against Meredith... and I encounter some normal (not blood magic...) mages from the Circle, and some templars conspiring against Meredith. I would like to join them, but no, I have to kill them. Every single one of them. I loot their bodies and go to a warehouse where I have to slaughter even more of them.

My Hawke does not deserve to live, and has absolutely no morality or decency left.

Ok they have my sister, but I didn't know that...

AFTER slaughtering all those people I got the chance to tell them I'm on their side... seriously?

The Dalish Clan can be spared. It just depends on what you say.

Take the blame; you won't have to fight the Dalish. The better question is why does every one want to kill you?

I really strongly disliked the way the Dalish issue was handled. Felt really cheap, and downright inhumane.

Yes, I said I reloaded and did not kill the dalish.

So Makeshift, you are telling me that if I replay the game I can play completely peacefully?

Still feel like Sir Lancelot in The Holy Grail.

A man like Hawke has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it. Because he needs revenge for Bein' Born.

Cookie for who gets the referance.

I never wanted to kill the Elves. Hell, I admire their culture and helped them at every turn. But they want to kill me and my friends. There can only be one outcome.

I wanted ME2's interrupts. *Hawke gets threatened* *Hawke uses Paragon Interrupt* "WAIT, I'M ON YOUR SIDE!!"

Sort of like when you walk out of that Fereldan Imports place while looking for Anders, and you can get those guys not to kill you by saying "But I'm Fereldan, just like you!"

Seriously. I don't *want* to kill everyone. I don't want everyone to kill me! And I seriously did not like receiving rivalry points with Merrill because I didn't slaughter her entire clan. I had this sudden panic that my Dalish Warden would come back from wherever she's gone and attack my Hawke for murdering her clan. Yikes.

Well, you can avoid killing the Arishok. That's something, right?

Also:
Blood Mage Interrupt (Hawke slits his wrist and waves it around)  "See guys!  I'm a Blood Mage too!!!"

Yeah, that got annoying as hell having to kill hordes of people that I really should have been working with.  But on the other hand, pretty much everyone was possessed in one way or another, so there's the excuse for not being able to befriend them.

Because Hawke says so. You just encounter them because they are all polygon cattle free to slaughter for your enjoyment. And besides, nobody likes diplomatic solutions anyway, just ask around in the third act.

Plenty of people you can avoid killing but a lot of the people in kirkwall are deranged bloodmages.

I think it's unrealistic to not want to kill "anyone" - this is an adventure, and even in more innocent fair like "Pirates of the Carribean" people die by the bucketloads.

But yes - I would love it if many of the minor and ALL of the major quests had multiple, relevant (important part here), solutions.

Some of you might be surprised by the number of people who went out of their way to avoid killing anyone during entire runs of Fallout New Vegas. People were thrilled by the idea that you could pull it off and avoid or talk your way out of almost every single battle. I'd never want to do that, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

There are several battles you or your companion can talk instead of fight.

In the beginning you, Bethany or Carver can say you're Ferelden and the fight with the thugs on the way to see Anders won't happen.

Danzig, the slaver guy, can be delt with without incident I presume by asking Fenris to make him talk; I always kill them.

The guy who is holding th Mage boy can be talked to by Varick and so can the templar that comes to kill the mages in Act of Mercy.

I'm sure there are more depending on who is in your party or if you give them what they want. There are also certian actions that you may take that will provoke retribution later on.

I did a playthrough where I on purpose killed the dalish clan and I was a bit dissapointed. Except for a line in the dalish camp right after I killed the whole lot of them Merrill dont mention it again :P Is it suppose to be like this or is it a bug? Or am I just missing something?

You would think Merrill would mention having to kill the whole clan she took up blood magic for to save.

Making 95% of the fights solveable by diplomatic means is one of the two mayor overhauls that combat in Dragon Age needs :<

Great clip! Perfect comparison for how I felt in that situation.

me: "Hey guys, I'm pretty sure Meridith is crazy and shouldn't be running the templars"

circle mages: "He's with Meridith, get him!!!"

Every time I'm asked to spy on or attend a secret meeting, I know i have to pretty much kill everyone.

Zevran sums it up "I don't understand why everyone thinks they can take on people like you and the warden."

There should be an option to stun/stagger all of them , tie them up and get Aveline's guards to arrest them or something.

The fact that you can't avoid conflict in "best served cold" is a bug in the program. This should have been an opportunity to build an alliance. Maybe they just wanted to get the game on the market and didn't take time to do it right.
