Why do I have to kill everyone I encounter?

It would be nice to have multiple solutions to progressing through gameplay segments (choice), such as in games like Deus Ex, Fallout, and even Bioware's games pre-ME/DAO. I like having the option to play as characters who're terrible at combat, and use their mind to solve problems instead of slaughtering everything in their path.

Like the topic says. In every encounter I kill people. Even people I don't want to kill, like the dalish clan in Merrils quest.. I reloaded that and managed to avoid the insane slaughter.
I was frustrated that I had to kill certain people for no reason, and couldn't kill other people for no reason. I mean, we have to fight Grace in Best Served Cold, but we can't kill Petrice after Shepherding Wolves. It's just weird.

Those two are some of the best examples of what Bioware shouldn't do to progress a quest to its end, especially in light of what a Hawke's beliefs can be and what Hawke may have said/done in the past.
