I know he claims to be telling the whole truth but we already seen him exaggerate the tale for a while when he first entered his brothers house. Normally the Seeker would stop Varric if he was lying/exaggerating but maybe by this point in the tale he had her completely engrossed in the champions story and she was eating whatever he said up. Heck by that point he could of said Andrastai swooped down from the heavens sword in hand and she may have gone along with it. It was commented on my playthrough that she had a glimmer of Hero worship over the champion and that was at the end of Act 2. Or, maybe more likely, she had already heard what she wanted to know and how the final battle went wasn't what she needed, or cared to correct Varric on.
I just feel it may be important to remember no matter what, we aren't playing the game as it happened, but how Varric is telling it.
