First off, I like to say that I believe this is the right forum to post this in. If not I apologize.

What I am posting is I would like to get involved in making mods for games but I have no Idea where to start. I would like to find someone that could "mentor" me in the way of making mods. I am in College going for computer programming specialist (havn't taken any programing class yet, unfortanly), and am currently reading a book about game design process called "Game Design: Second Edition" by Bob Bates.

At the very least I like some suggestions for books that help you learn about mod making and game development.
Thanks very much in advance.:D

The best way to start is probably to mess around with NWN 1 or 2 in the Toolset. Just play around, make a huge and craggy mountain, or a deep and pointlessly winding river. Once you've gotten an idea of how area building, effect making, and placeable... placing work, go download some of the top modules for your respective game. I advise using NWN Vault for either game.

Once you've got a couple games, play through them and figure out how each and every thing and area you run across was made, and how it looks in game.

Of course, that's all area building. Scripting is a bit more complicated, you'll probably need to work through tutorials though you can generally get some ideas by opening up other people's modules and taking a look through their scripts. Try not to outright copy things though, it's better to make them yourself.

No problem, and the name is Driggan. You can call him Deerfish if it helps you remember the D's, I don't mind.:innocent:

Oh and have a skim through the toolset wiki page accessed by one of the links at the top of the page.

Don't worry about the large amount of information, just look at what interests you and feel free to ask questions on this forum. There will people more than willing to help.

Place that I learned my programming and mod making was on http://www.3dbuzz.com they have some free video tutorials. The guy who does it is an actual professor who teaches people how to program and  use 3D applications like 3D Studio Max, Maya, Houdini, zbrush, and many others.

Yep.  The more you read, the more you will be informed.  Nearly every1 who mod's started off with minimal skills/knowledge (not counting raw talent), and they all learned as they went.  Good luck, and have fun.

How vital is C++? There's a school here in town offering degrees in game design, and one of the classes I'm going to take is C++ since I keep hearing how prevalent it is in the industry. Does anyone know how long it takes, on average, to learn it?
