I wasn't sure if this quest actually affected the outcome of my game.  Is it perhaps only important if you're getting the Vicountcy?  Ser Marlein promised help against the templars, but I didn't notice any (unless their numbers were diminished without my knowing.)

I just got this quest for the first time (on my 3rd playthrough and sided with Orsino during the argument at Act 3 start--both other times I tried to stay neutralish), and I went back numerous pages in this forum section looking for info on it, but found none. There's not much mention of it outside of this forum either, so I'm thinking a) not many people have gotten this quest or B) it doesn't have much of an outcome. The wikia page on it is pretty bare-bones as well, listing no outcome or linked quests either. [I found this post of yours via google.]

I really want it to be important! Regardless, when I went to go protect the nobles in their secret meeting about how awesome my Hawke was (kidding!--about how terrible Meredith is), not only were the templars there, because of Ser So-n-So, but the Followers of She AND another group of miscreants, maybe the coterie (they were all dwarves). I had to fight all of them at the same time! It was madness! It was kind of worth it for that absurdity alone. I mean Ser Marlein and I stopped to chat after the templars were dead, but while the Coterie and Followers of She were still kicking my team's butt off-camera (not really of course, but it felt like it).

I had the Followers of She overlap, so I went back and removed that gang (you can fight them repeatedly until you get a gang-removing quest) and then finished.

There was a bit of discussion about this on the QuartertoThree boards and the consensus seemed to be that it was either glitched or an orphan, since it seemed to have no effect.

I've always gotten this quest, probably because I always bash Meredith, lol.  I was hoping it would lead to... something!  So, how DO you go after the vicountcy???  I've done a search, but could not find anything.

Yeah, you have to side with Orsino in order to get the quest.

You get to be the Viscount at the end by siding with the templars in the final battle. That simple. :)

Yep yep!

Won't spoil it for you Quasar but the cutscene at battle's end made me go "Oh, nice!" --- and made me hope that Knight-Captain Cullen will show up again in DA III   :)

Oh that is hard!  I guess I will have to side with the templars once just to see that ending!  Might reload my male Hawke rogue save and flip sides at the last minute -- hey, everyone else is doing it!

Thank you!  Clearly I would never have found out otherwise!

I think the point of the quest was to show just how awful Meredith is becoming - sending out death squads to kill mage sympathisers. I don't think it's broken, just a very minor sidequest meant to showcase Meredith's insanity.

I think it was more a case of it was originally meant to lead somewhere but then the game was rushed out and that particular thread never completed. It is not just a case of showcasing Meredith's brutality as you also get to cut off her supplies and since the nobles do say that you'll have their support in the future, it is odd that there is absolutely no sign of them from then on. At the very least they could have written in that one of them turns up and tells you that in view of the bombing of the Chantry, their support has now been withdrawn. May be it is one of those things that will be transferred over into DA3.

DA 2 was a pretty rushed game (not trying to insult or be snide to BW) so it was probably just a quest line or quest flag that would change the end of the game a bit.

Even that part of the game where you had to choose whether to do a frontal assault of the VIscounts Keep or a diversion I think might have had more to it...either option you do nothing changes...why not have some nobles killed if you do the frontal assault or something? It wouldn't have been too hard to put in and would at least take away the illusion of choice. oh well

after some experimenting I found out that after you side with orsino and after I left the area and came back (during the day) that marlein appeared then and it worked out fine when I looked into the quest in other forums it just said to side with orsino but not to leave the area and come back.
