Is there any way to get some kind of happy ending with Merrill? If you stick with her to the end you end up with dead keeper and possibly dead dalish clan, yet she's happy as can be.

If you try to reason against her using the eluvian, she just hates you more and more. (Though I haven't completed my playthrough going against Merrill it already doesn't look like it will end well.)

Usually in these games there is a kind of Paragon-ish ending with either a decisively good or bad ending that brings some sense of closure. Yet with Merrill it seems like it ends up being a sh**storm either way you go.

What do?:?

It is possible to get a very happy ending. Or as happy as you can be with the circumstances.

It's happy.

I haven't actually tried it, but I suspect that going full Rivalry will eventually lead to an argument where you can change her mind about the mirror.

I just never finished her final quest, and then she ran off with me. So I'd call that a happy ending.

We annihilated her entire clan, yet she constantly referred to me as "ma vhenan" (my heart) and we are currently wandering around till DA3 lol.

Will have to try a few different playthroughs, maybe try maxing out on friendship before telling her to leave the mirror alone. Hopefully it won't affect the relationship lol.

If Hawke does carry over to DA3 I really hope they keep Merrill around.

I saved the clan, and she was the only one who stuck by me in the end.

I'd say that was a happy ending.

If you max out friendship and then doesn't give her the tool, the dialogue suggests that you gave it to her anyway. So like I said: what you do with the quests doesn't really seem to matter, what matters is what relationship you have. I don't know if this is a bug or if Bioware didn't anticipate this.

Oh, I'm sure Merril had her first 'happy ending' with Hawke.

If you romance her and side with the mages you two run off together. You can also spare her clan in taking responsability for her actions.

I wonder if you could clarify a bit more? I have Merrill at max friendship, and I've just got to the end of "Mirror Image". I need to decide whether to give her the tool or not, but I don't want to completely stall her personal quests, and I don't want to cut off my ability to romance her.

If you don't give her the tool, do you still get personal quests later on, and are they different to the quests you get if you do give her the tool? How does either decision affect the romance?

I haven't got that far in my playthrough after that. All I know is that the dialogue afterwards suggested that I gave her the tool, and the romance part later was exactly the same.

It's either kill the dalish(in my case it was MY warden's clan) or have her hate you.
Hard decision.

No only the keeper has to die. When you exit the cavern select the line I take responsibility and she is banned but they keep their lives.

I'm having problems even getting to that point. After completing the 'Find Nat Howe' mission, I got a quest to talk to Merrill at her house. I go there, and she's all weepy about the keeper being dead and the clan hates her, etc. It seems like the end scene for the quest. Then if I talk to her again (she still has the quest pointything) then it's a scene where Varric is telling her that she needs to get out of the house. After some chitchat she says she wants to go into the sunshine, but then there's no follow on quest at all.

We've already had a sleepover, she's sometimes at my house (but sometimes not) and when she left at the beginning of the act to go play with her mirror, I just told her to be careful. She's at 100% friendship.
What the heck is going on. Seems like some busted variable checks or sets.

How did you save the clan?  I always only had the option of taking the blame and getting her banished or kill everyone.

Take the responsibility reply. I think it was the bottom one.

Oh that is what he/she meant. I was confused about the saving the whole clan part. Because the Clan wasn't in danger. Only Merriel was.

Hmmm. Well, even if that's the case, I think I might just give her the tool anyway, as it makes no sense for her to still like Hawke 100% after he refuses. It just feels like abusing the friendship mechanic.

Well the happiest it can get really is if you take responsibility for her actions when confronted by the clan at the top of Sundermount.

Overall though I'd say it was a good ending for her. Rather than some happy sunshine and roses ending you get an ending where she grows a little character-wise and learns that she needs to think of herself and her needs sometimes too.

@ Zambling: I've heard of that glitch but never experianced it myself. It can be easily countered though by returning to the Hawke estate I hear.

Very common glitch. I have that too. You've indeed seen the end of her questline. It annoyed me greatly.

Yeah Cundu its a known bug. I've had that one and the reverse of that one when I tried to fix it. Not sure if anything is supposed to come after "A Talking Too". Someone mentioned in another thread you are supposedly able to convince her to abandon it in Act 3, but I have yet to see that happen.

Does anyone not getting this the bug know how the Rival romance is supposed to play out in Act 3, if you didn't let her fix the mirror? It seems very odd that the Friend romance path has a whole quest chain and the Rival path has nothing after "A Talking Too" at least for me.

I think "A Talking To" is supposed to come first, then "A New Path," THEN "Mourning" (the scene with the mirror)

"A New Path" is the one with the demon possessed keeper is it not? Because if you go rival and don't let her fix the mirror in Act 2, what is supposed to happen? You can still romance her, but something is screwed up at the Act 3 transition -or- there is nothing after "A Talking Too" if you go the rival romance route, which would really suck...
