When I try to create a new character the model disappears when I choose background, or in the case of human characters when i choose class.

When I continue i can't modify the character appearence because there is no character. I can spend attribute points but they do not get allocated. I can't choose any talents because all of my attributes are to low. And then I can't continue.

I have the game installed and patched to 1.4. I don't have the toolset installed.

I re-installed the game and didn't patch it this time. And now it works! I guess the patch caused the issue. Any ideas would be helpful because I still want to patch the game.

There's really no way to deal with your problem based on the current lack of information.  First, go into your forum profile, and register the game there, then we can look at this in more depth (assuming we get the missing information as well).

For some owners of Windows Vista and / or Windows 7, if you are using either one, it is best to find and use patch 1.02A and to avoid 1.03 / 1.04.  We do not know why this is true for such a large percentage, and we should request that people go ahead and fill out the standard problem report, whether rolling back (it requires uninstalling, and not patching all of the way) from the 1.03 / 1.04 pair works, or not.

1.03 is, and that's where trouble for the two Vista twins starts.

For whatever reason, John's incomplete question (as stated by first author) was handled as if the OP included more information than what is / was there, and without him having registered as a game owner.

No one else is going to get that kind of WAG approach now:

same exact problem. Gorath if what you're saying is that you want to see system specs of the machines that are having this problem here are mine. I am at my wits end, because I love creating the look of the character but it wont allow me to edit the char at all. I can start the game without editing but the he just looks like a bald creature from the matrix. Anyway here are my specs. I do appriciate everyone's help that is looking into a solution for this.

Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Name Centrino dual core
Processor Speed: 1.8 Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 32 bit
System RAM: 2 GB
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: Nvidia
Video Card Model: Geforce 8400M GT
Video Card Driver Version: Forceware Version 167.43
Video Card onboard RAM: 128 MB Dedicated Mem, 895 MB total graphics mem, 767 MB shared system, 0MB system video mem
Sound Card Manufacturer: SigmalTel High Definition Audio
Sound Card Model: not sure

Also, I do have the tool set and am activly downloading the character creator, just in case one of them in necessary.  I have 1.4 updated andawakening installed.

It's entirely possible that your hardware is just not up to the task. AFAIK, the Centrino was a P3 chip predating the Core developments, and probably less powerful that a PC from the last several years (after the Core Duo's replacement of just about everytning else Intel was selling) typically is.

Laptops tend to be weak and slow when not specifically designed for very hard use, and even a desktop 8400 is barely equal to the official minimum graphics (which I don't think is good enough. NOTE: There is no official support from EA for laptop hardware. )

I do see that your graphics driver is an antique, and probably CAN'T work with the game, but as old and weak as an 8400M is, do not get a brand new current replacement driver, which won't work, either, so look for the 197.45, frequently suggested as what to use with the old Geforce 8n00 generation.

You will also need to register your game within your forum profile, which is how the three small icons under my "picture" got there.

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (this is clearly wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce "6600 GT" 128MB or greater (and this one is more wrong)

(Note: IMO, the practical choices for the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least, for small textures - it will take a Radeon X1650 XT (or X1800 GTO, same thing, almost) for medium or better textures)

So you don't think its possible to tweak the settings of the Nvidia settings to make it work? Also, if the update may be a problem, would it work if I uninstalled everything, installed DAO without any updates, created a char and then updated/installed the rest of the works, would that possibly work? Or are you basically trying to say nicely that it's time to upgrade the 'ol Vaio?

Register the game, and find a driver closer to a year and a half old than to five years, and see what happens.

The character creator program works perfectly. Any thoughts of why or how this is possible, yet I still cannot make one in the game?

You haven't registered, at least your profile isn't showing anything.
