Is there a spell in the actual game that does this or something similar, or is this only part of Varric's fanciful tale ...

Anyway thanks, I have only tried the base level crushing prison and haven't seen that yet, but then the target wasn't close to death either.

I think what he/she meant is that it's just a cinematic move not usable outside the.. well.. cinematics.

It happened when I used Crushing Prison on an Orge in the Deep Roads. The hands weren't blue though, they were white. It looked awesome, none-the-less.
I think you need a 'perfect' set up for it (staggered target, CP upgrade, enemy near death). Otherwise, I'm going to assume there's a low chance of it happening against any enemy, as long as CP is the killing blow.

Wat.
Tell me more. Do you have a screen perhaps?
If so then my hopes for mage deathblows weren't really shattered..

I assume there wasn't a cutscene but just in game visuals?

But yeah, I just used an upgraded Crushing Prison on the ogre when Aveline staggered him with Pommel Strike. He was at about 1/3 to 1/4 health, I think.
If I recall correctly, the spell lifted him, like he was a normal enemy and did the regular damage anim against him (holding him in place). Then, all of a sudden, small grayish portals opened on the left and right sides of him, white hands clutched and then crushed him. My jaw dropped.
And yes, this was all in-game -- no cinematic or anything.

I don't have a screenshot unfortunately (I'm playing on console) and I wasn't drunk -- hopefully not crazy either.

Going to test this with my mage to see.
Maybe a cross-class combo thing only.

Your post makes me think a lot of people angry at the "tactics being bad" have not experimented with a lot of potential combos.
I being one of them (I'm not angry at the game though).
Thanks for that info, will definately test it out
