I think this is how it happened:

My initial mage Hawke was fully invested in the Elemental tree.  I respec'd (via Maker's Sigh) into mostly Primal and saved the game.  I loaded that game again after dying in Deep Roads and not only did I have my full Primal, I had 4 points invested in the Fire portion of the Elemental tree.  

I'm level 14 now and when I use another Maker's Sigh I have 18 skill points to allocate -- all of my other chars have 14.  I know I shouldn't be ****ing because it's almost like a bonus but it is kind of trivializing the gameplay a bit.  I know -- I guess I could just not use those 4 points but... it's too hard to resist! I'm playing on HARD btw.

I know others are having similair issues but mine seems more related to both re'specing and loading...
