I've made about half a dozen characters, one of which made it to Act II. Now, I'll be honest. I'm downright terrible at customizing characters. Without a step-by-step build, I just hit the Auto Level button and I was done. I didn't do that in DA:O because there were tons of proper build guides out there. Of course, I could use Maker's Sigh, but it's pretty bugged so I don't bother with it at all and I just restart the game if I want a different build.

This current playthrough on Hard, I've been trying to make custom builds while taking full advantage of Custom Tactics. I've been starting off building my characters to fully exploit CCCs but still hitting Auto Level just for Stat distribution. My party consists of 2H Warrior Hawke (opens Stagger, closes Brittle), Varric (open Disorient, can't close yet), Merrill (opens Brittle, closes Disorient/Stagger), and Anders (Heals/Buffs).

I just got to and finished Hayder fight and... wow. I'm speechless. I don't even know what happened. I had a big WTF moment when I saw everyone was still alive and Hayder was already dead while I was intercepting trash pops. I hadn't noticed he was dead until the trash I intercepted died as well and I got the finishing dialogue. I'm not 2H tanking either. It's pretty much Stagger DPS, Disorient DPS, Brittle DPS, Healer/Buffer. My first 2H Warrior playthrough, I went in with purely Auto Leveled Hawke, Aveline, Varric, and Anders. Varric was the last one alive and I had to kite and plink away his health... after a few reloads.

I'm sure players have already beat the game on Hard/Nightmare so I have a few questions:

1. Should I turn up the difficulty to Nightmare or keep playing on Hard? This is my first real playthrough, since I all I've experienced was the opening scene of Act II without wanting to restart to rebuild my Hawke (please fix Maker's Sigh, Bioware. I don't want to keep restarting to rebuild my characters)

2. Should I replace Varric with Isabella so I have 2 melee/2 ranged instead of 1 melee/3 ranged?

3. Is this group composition viable past Act I?

Edit: Just did the Night Lies quest, which also gave me an Ancient Rock Wraith worthy amount of trouble my previous playthrough. Using my CCC group, only Anders died this time from Archers just before wave 3.

Compared to the combos that were available in DA:O the X-class are rather tame and they're not easily utilized against higher difficulty opponents. If you're building a dps focuses party (and it sounds as though you are) you'll really need to exploit those combinations at higher difficulty settings just to survive long enough to lick your wounds.

I'm playing a combination of Hard and Nightmare, and X-class combos do make some fights seem too easy. The Arishok, for instance, goes down like a sack of sod if you use the right combination of abilities. For some fights, though, they're a requirement just to survive (Demon Hunter and Exorcist achievements.)

Well I think if the cross class combo's worked a bit a better, they might be OP but since I have yet to find the secret tatic tweak to make Fenris auto Scythe/Might Blow on something my mage makes brittle, so I'm gonna say they aren't OP, lol. No matter how I set it up, I still have still have to grab ahold of the ass and do it myself before the brittle wears off. :(

Unlike Origins where I could tell Morrigan to Sleep on X amount of clustered foes, then if sleeping then horror, if sleeping then mass nightmare which would gaurentee she'd use the spells correctly 100% of the time. Sleep, Horror, Mass Nightmare. Boom. Boom. Boom. Done. Next. Petrify + Stonefist was another fav combo I had that worked great on tatics in DAO/A. :(

Nightmare is a completely different beast from Hard. Fights that I struggled to scrape a victory against after a dozen reloads on Nightmare I've finished without a single person dying on the first try on Hard. Of course, I also wasn't very good at doing CCCs until later, and I actually knew the fights this time around, so that is definitely a factor.

Anyways, as to your group comp question, I actually had a lot of success using myself (dagger rogue, sometimes switched to a bow but not respecced), Merril or Sebastian, Varric, and Anders on heals. It was a really fun group as we could mow things down really quickly, and was especially useful against the Sharps groups that are 100% archers. Downside is that you almost NEED a tank for the big fights. You might be able to get away with using the animation juking, but I had little luck with that. And Fenris wasn't a good tank in my experience, though I'm not sure if a 2h Hawke would fare differently.

Edit: Oh and on Varric vs Isabela, I actually liked both of them.  Varric is almost always better, but Isabela's All Hands On Deck was absoltely amazing against clustered groups.

2h Hawke does just fine on Hard, decent on Nightmare. Vanguard/Berserker/2h, with enough points in Warmonger to get Taunt and Bravery fully upgraded. Champion armor set with all +armor runes except one Valiance on the chestpiece.

I play with archer hawke on hard... I absolutely cannot beat the act III High Dragon no matter what I do lol, but for cross class combos... you're going to need those for the huge darkspawn battle when you rescue nathaniel. I think a total of 5 ogres come out at the same time with a LOT of hurlocks and hurlock bolters. I use a combo of winter's grasp+mark of death+archer's lance to kill 1 ogre instantly, and somehow struggle through the rest of the battle. XD

I felt some CCCs were a bit to good (Assassinate and Explosive Strike namely), but others were fine.
