If you're not familiar with the bug I'm talking about I'll outline it here.

Essentially, if you've romanced merrill at the start of Act III she will appear in your mansion and tell you that she's going to the alienage, if you go there the quest that is SUPPOSED to trigger will be in your questlog but you will actually see the aftermath of her final quest (in which the friend or foe dialogue is triggerred). This essentially either ruins the end result of merrills final quest or confuses the hell out of you if you don't know what happens in her final quest.

Using the console I was able to run part 3 of her quest and proceed to finish it and then see the dialogue, unfortunately this meant eschewing 3 other dialogues just to get that one done.

I know bioware will eventually patch this up, but it would be nice to see what the modding community could do with this (my hunch is that theres a boolean flipped to true when it should be false).

What is the easiest way to avoid this from happening?

There is no way to avoid it.

I don't remember anything weird happening to me on the playthrough where I romanced Merril, so that's why I am asking.

I must have done things in a different order to avoid the bug. Thus, it would be good to know what that is, so people can self-avoid this problem.

You probably got the bug and didn't realize it, check your savegames and if possible go to merrill's house after the talk with orsino and meredith in act II (the one in the crowd), you might have to talk to meredith in the hightown mansion about her going there. Once you're there the bug will happen.

If it was a rivalry romance, it *might* be different.

No, it happens with the Rival path too. I want back and tested it. Romanced her at the end of act 2. In Act 3 she's in the estate, says she's going home for a bit. You get the "A Talking Too" quest, but when you go to her house the shattered mirror thing happens. Then you are able to complete "A Talking Too". At that point I'm not sure what is supposed to happen afterward, because another quest doesn't pop up..

This isn't a fix, but a temporary solution. Take a look at this thread:

And to repost what I suggested:

  • There is a preexisting bug in all versions, that when you get
to the 3rd chapter you're unable to perform Merrill's quest as she seems
to think that her teacher killed herself from the impending companion
    quest.
  • The resolution is below.
  • runscript zz_mrl_debug
  • Select Main Quest
  • Select Act 3
  • Select 1 - Start Merrill Notify.
  • Quest has officially began, and you can now contact Merrill
in her home and perform the proper companion quest as normal. It is
recommended that you perform 'A Talking To' and 'On The Loose' prior to
using the console commands to stay with the chronology. It might also
    end those quests prematurely[/quote]

I've posted in that thread a couple of times and yes I've used the console several times (its actually better to select option 3 and then continue from there as selecting option one can bug), however I'm looking for someone to create a more permanent solution.

My short cut points to steam because I have the steam version, am I screwed or am I just not finding the game where it "should" be?

Maybe this didn't affect me because I didn't romance Merril until act III when she shows up at my house.

The only solution I can think of is finding the Journal entry for "Mourning" in the savegame, which triggers as complete after Act II. This *might* be the trigger for the early cutscene, but I'm not sure.

All I know is the cutscene misfire damn near ruined the whole game for me. That says quite a bit because I was loving every bit of it before Act III started.

Yeah if I can't fix this I'm thinking about starting over, I sort of chose Merrill at random.

Here is a question? Even if it messed up does the romance still work out, or is it borked and screw up the ending?

Aside from the errant cutscene, everything works fine. After I did the actual quest, party members started talking about it. The ending has a separate bug: if you slept with Isabela, it seems to override your Merrill romance.

After playing around with it some more this appears to be the root of the problem.  If you romance her as Friend and let her fix the mirror in  Act 2, it appears the shattered mirror cut-scene triggers immidiately upon entering Act 3 and you will never get the cut-scene where she shatters the Mirror, even after you kill the Keeper and spare the clan.

Wish I had figured this out earlier as it would have saved me about 5 hours on an alternate playthrough trying to test it...

EDIT: "Mourning" is actually a seperate bug.  It is the quest for Merrill if you took your sibling into the Deep Roads and they died.  It appears to auto-complete regardless of the outcome of Act 1.

Damn!  That stupid easy pirate, seduced me wearing a shirt, boots, and underwear, and then messes up my epilogue!

I thought it might have been an issue with mourning as well however that doesn't seem to be the case as I did fix mourning, mourning is supposed to take place in act I actually BEFORE you tell your mother the news about bethany/carver which is not the case for the other quest where merrill comforts you if carver jointed the templars/bethany was taken to the circle. (at least thats what the console says and what the dialogue implies).

I was able to run that via the console, unfortunately it didn't work.

And yes I was able to get the full romance, however, its still irritating that the "finale" of the quest is completely out of order with the actual questline.

The romance with merrill will still work IF you didn't sleep with isabela (you can unflag the romance via the console command however and ti will work).

That being said its a very annoying issue that needs to be looked at >>.

Hmm correct me if im wrong, but i think i didnt encountered that bug.

SPOILERS !

I edned up in act 3 with her quest about the Eluvian Mirror, i went out to the dalish camp, talked with the Dalish keeper, went out into mountain cave with the demon, then keeper showed up and explained she slaved the demon inside her, as a result i had to kill her, and later had to talk with rest of dalish elves from the camp. Quest ended normally.

My question is - was this the last quest from her companion quests line ? Or i miss something ?

Actually, the Carver/Templars and Bethany/Circle should trigger 'Consoling Words' instead.

The Mourning should happen after either off 'em join the Wardens(I think), but there's just no way to trigger it since it always auto-completes. And you will even miss Merrill's "After Deep Roads codex entry.

hm, gotta try that in my 3rd playthrough... modifying the last savegame before the great fight didn't work... ending cinematic still mentioned Isabela, not Merrill.
Also, won't sleep with her in my next playthrough...

I can confirm that this happens even if you don't romance her (note: I started her romance slightly, she did come to my house in act II confessed her feelings but I turned her down for this current playthrough). I actually didn't know that this is the bugged portion of her quest. I went to visit her at the start of act 3 and got the whole "She's dead..." dialogue and had absolutely no idea what was going on. :\\ I brought her to Sundermount to see if it was supposed to trigger something but the Keeper was there, quite alive.

Untill you do the quest 'A New Path' when the keeper is taken over by the pride demon if which Merrill made the deal with she will die cuz she went their to sort him out before he could reach merrill through the elvein sorry if this was a spoiler for all merrill romancers but that trigger of the "she's dead" might of been a glitch time error as it happened before not after.

Damn, I need to get this fixed badly. I've been playing through with a friend, he romanced Merril and just got to act III. After the discussion he has with her in Hawke estate, she'll be crying at her "home".

Good thing I heard about this before he got onto that part, sure would have ruined immersion to find out a pretty important part of his game is broken...
(As I tested it out on his save before he had the chance to play)

And for the console? That seems useless. When I set that whole "Merril in her house" thing, I don't get teleported anywhere. And when I go to her house, she's either crying at the mirror or I can't simply talk to her, even though I have the quest.

I also tried not doing the small part at Hawke Estate before enabling the plot flag. It's still either one of those two results. Sure, I can start the quest after the whole crying part, but what's the point? A big spoiler before the actual quest, and that part doesn't trigger anymore after the quest is completed.

Agh, has anyone using the console command actually gotten the convos to work in the right order? You know from Hawke estate > her house, where she gives the quest for the demon > the whole quest > crying at the mirror.

On my own save I didn't romance her and there were no problems. I'd be fine if this had happened to me, but I rather not ruin the immersion of his playthrough... I swear, Bioware always screws something of the plotflags up. How can it be so hard.
