Damn, I need to get this fixed badly. I've been playing through with a friend, he romanced Merril and just got to act III. After the discussion he has with her in Hawke estate, she'll be crying at her "home".

Good thing I heard about this before he got onto that part, sure would have ruined immersion to find out a pretty important part of his game is broken...
(As I tested it out on his save before he had the chance to play)

And for the console? That seems useless. When I set that whole "Merril in her house" thing, I don't get teleported anywhere. And when I go to her house, she's either crying at the mirror or I can't simply talk to her, even though I have the quest.

I also tried not doing the small part at Hawke Estate before enabling the plot flag. It's still either one of those two results. Sure, I can start the quest after the whole crying part, but what's the point? A big spoiler before the actual quest, and that part doesn't trigger anymore after the quest is completed.

Agh, has anyone using the console command actually gotten the convos to work in the right order? You know from Hawke estate > her house, where she gives the quest for the demon > the whole quest > crying at the mirror.

On my own save I didn't romance her and there were no problems. I'd be fine if this had happened to me, but I rather not ruin the immersion of his playthrough... I swear, Bioware always screws something of the plotflags up. How can it be so hard.

You know what ? On my first playthrough the order was intact, no glitching of any kind, and I realized that I did not have her in my party all the time (which I pretty much did on my 2nd playthrough).
Maybe it really does have something to do with befriending her too fast... On my 3rd playthrough i'll leave her at home a little bit more, particularly on quests involving blood mages...

On my first playthrough I had her pretty much on my party, the quest worked fine.

I don't remember if she ever got to the friend path too quick though. But really, all is possible. From what I've seen from some of the DA2 bugs, they only happen to certain people on certain playthroughs. Quite random.

Yeah. Without a toolset, the only fix looks like it'll have to come from a Bioware patch.

I wouldn't count on one coming. It's pretty much up to the modders right now.

It's too critical not to be fixed in a patch. As the above fellow noted, "when" is the operative question.

Same thing could have been said about the silverite mine in Awakening...the question is still whether they can get this particular fix through the patching proccess on console or not.

The "when" of getting a patch for this, and other issues, is the problem. Even if they're working overtime there is probably a formal process the devs need to go through for bug identification, testing, correcting, testing of the correction, beta, and then live release of the patch. Add in multiple platforms and I can see this taking a little while. If it happens rapidly I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Of course, that's all speculation from a random forum member who would rather be playing the game than posting here, but can't stand to feel content is missing or bugged while doing a playthrough. Take it for the little that it's worth.

Quite odd. I continued on in my game last night, fully ready to use the console to trigger the quest as need be but as soon as I finished "On the Loose", "A New Path" popped up and on visiting her she states she wants me to bring her to Sundermont. That tells me the quest still triggers fine sometimes, but the end result cutscene firing when it shouldn't takes away some of the enjoyment of this quest.

The new patch seems to just be to get through helping people that can't actually get the game to work, save, connect to the EA servers. I'm hoping in the background they're working on a much bigger patch to fix cameo bugs and this one (as much as I like my cameos, this one is much more important since it basically ruins Merrill's storyline).

Don't remember whether I had that bug, probably did. Keeper was killed and then all of the Dalish there went berserk and attacked us. I don't even recall getting any special option to avoid that. So I had to splat a whole bunch of elves and that with my "good guy". Talk about bummer, heh...

As for ending, then funnily enough I had both Isabela and Merril mentioned in ending. It was actually funny as they were mentioned pretty much at the same time, Isabela mentioned only a fraction later. I didn't even plan to romance Merril, Isabela was sort of more fun person and I had the max friend points with her, also had her "thumbs up" listed under abilities (although she wore the same armor and nowhere in dialogue options saw I something which would have mentioned that we were an "item" from now on). I was simply friendly to Merril, no flirt or such and next thing I know, they wake up in same bed.. What the... I assumed then that somehow I had overwritten Isabela's romance, who knows where, so figured that what the heck, will go on with Merril. She did get different armor, although nothing related to her was mentioned under abilities like it was with Isabela.

And then, when I sided with mages and before we started to chop templars down into into small temps, my char kisses with Merril, they say how they love each other, all that mushy stuff. And then when I speak with Isabela next she does the same thing, they kiss right under Merril's nose like there's no tomorrow and make vows to survive for each other and such. It was a brow-raising moment, like "Oohh kay, what was that.. And Merril didn't even mind it?" And then, at the epilogue, Varric told "... and he remained with Merril" and then immediately added "... remained with Isabela".

Guess I had that bug and several more...

I would like to ask a related question to this bug.

I'm having Merrill forseeing the future as well, and have considered doing the console fix that has been suggested some places.

If I do that, will that impact the end of the quest? I mean, will the story unfold properly and will it give me the same end dialogue again?

What will happen if I do nothing, just click through the bugged part. Will it trigger the quest as per normal or is the console fix needed?

Same thing could have been said about the silverite mine in Awakening...the question is still whether they can get this particular fix through the patching proccess on console or not.

Ms. Kirby has said that as far as she knows, the next patch will address the Merrill bug.

Thank goodness!

Instead of doin what the wiki said, I used the merill debug with chosing, act 3, new path, then choosing merills home. I got the bad dialogue, but then the good. I noticed beforehand whenever I visited her, Verric would be standing at the front door, and any follow up conversations with Merrill involved Verric. With console he's still at door and i get option to talk to her again, but at least I have quest to go get the keeper infested. If I remember I'll post an update on whether on ot this work. O and one final nifty bug, I apparently completed Consoling Words AND Mourning.

Ok, so I ran through most of act 2 again, just to confirm...the Merrill Act 3 bug is connected to earning her full friendship (not sure about rivalry) before the start of act 3. Every time I've loaded a save, romance active or not, in which Merrill's friendship is maxed out before the Qunari crisis, the moment I go to Merrill's home for "A Talking to" her Act 3 starting conversation quest, I get the "A New Path" end dialogue first instead.

However, if Merrill has never reached full friendship, everything in act 3 triggers normally. From a roleplay perspective this is somewhat frustrating, since my character was also a blood mage and wanted to support Merrill in her desire to use the arulin'holm...the only way to not max her out by the end of her "Mirror Image" Quest in Act 2 is to not romance her, not take her on any quests where mages are helped, and/or not give her the tool to fix the mirror.

Hope this helps people plan out their playthroughs until there is a patch.

Has anyone tried unfriending her using the console after arriving in Act3 but before going to her house the first time?

Sadly, that won't work because once friendship or rivalry is maxed, the bar is locked and won't move; it's why you no longer see approval or disapproval when you do things companions do or don't like.  Even selecting the "Rival" option in the app_debug menu won't move the meter once you're all the way in one direction.

I had to go all the way back to the start of act 2, as by the end of "Mirror Image" most mage-friendly characters will have Merrill maxed and therefore will experienced her bugged quest in act 3.

Oh, well if the console script can't do it, its pretty easy to use pyGFF to edit a save and remove friendship/rivalry.

The approval values are in their own section..
SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST
SAVEGAME_PARTY_APPROVAL_LIST

Merrill's ID is 5090, so set her app level to 0.

Then goto: SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
and find Merrill's entry in that list..

Expand:
SAVEGAME_CREATURE_STATS
SAVEGAME_ABILITYLIST

And delete the entry for abilities: 312002 (friendship) or 312003 (rivalry).

Give that a try if you're motivated.
