Its possible in a way. rogues do not have the damage resistance options available to warriors. however they have better defense options due to a high cunning and certain talents (dueling) add in a few defense runes to your armor and you should be able to avoid much damage.

in short.

pump cunning (you should anyway for lockpicking, traps) look at the dueling tree down the defense line evasive manuevers, parry, etc.

you should also retain some of the sabotage trees... faitguing fog and imrpoved miasmic flask  would improve survivability if surrouned/overwhelmed

I really haven't had much problem with damage on normal on my dw no stealth rogue.

Honestly on harder difficulties even with Mages giving you defense buffs, best armor, And Cunning maxed as much as you can. The rouge still can only take so many hits. My level 24 rouge with Defense 80% 3,492, and Armor 36% 642, I still can maybe take two hard hits at the most from an elite or higher, normals is fine, but you won't feel like a tank with Hawke this way at all if thats what your looking for.

Edit: forgot to note that my defense could have been higher with a respec if I keep in mind that I only need to go to 31 Dex to equip champion armor with +7 atts, this will allow you to equip the best daggers from there and put more points into cunning but I've been to lazy to go to the emporium for that.

Note though if you are getting hit as a rouge your playing it wrong.
