Isabela also surprised me in a good way.

Varric was about the only decent companion. If i had the option i'd single handely slaughter the rest by the end of the game. Nothing but constant moaning and b****ing.

I've really grown fond of Aveline, the more I play with her; the more I like her.

Anders is also great.

Merrill, easily. Possibly my favorite BioWare character, period. Certainly up there with Liara, Tali, Mordin, Alistair, Leliana, and Mission.

I developed a strong emotional connection to Aveline pretty quickly, and although she has her differences with my Hawke, they get along well. Varric is snarky awesome. Isabela can be funny at times. Carver and Anders are kinda meh, and I strongly dislike Fenris, to the point that I almost never bring him along on missions.

playable wise- i like Varric and merrill seem more down to earth and funny.
Non playable characters: i like Sandal just think he is amazing, first time in dao when i saw him covered in blood enchantment? he is bound to be something majorly powerful.
Also the Arishok i also found interesting.

Its awfully hard to pick just one, maybe Bethany. I really liked seeing Flemeth again, that was mighty cool. Isabella and Merrill are both really great. Aveline on the other hand, I started out liking her OK but steadily grew to dislike her, now I never have her in the party if I can help it. I really liked Varric more than I expected to, he was a good member of the team, for all those times when you can't have Bethany-Isabella-Merrill (which is WAY too often, given the whole horrible end of act 1 thing and all), I'd say those three would have to be the single greatest team in gaming history . Their conversations and comments are hilariously awesome, of course they're awesomely powerful, they're just super awesome to have around. I also liked Cassandra, hopefully we'll get to see a lot more of her at some point down the line.

Didn't really care for Anders, Fenris was OK, Sebastian was a bit better, didn't mind taking him along on his quests, he had some entertaining conversations with Isabella. But the bottom line I suppose, for the teammates, is Bethany first, then Merrill/Isabella (I cant choose between them, they're too awesome!), then Varric.
