In lieu of the recent flamewar between those who adore and despise Dragon Age 2, I think it's time we recognize an unsung hero of the ordeal. While Stanley Woo's laconic "line-ending" has become the object of 4chan scorn and David Gaider's attempt to respond to the game's critisism has done little more than fuel the fires, there has been one rouguishly charming moderator who has brought us together in these divisive times.

I'm referring to the 6'3 paragon of Edmonton, Mr. John Epler. His beauty is matched only by his virtue.

A few years ago, I attended my first science fiction convention. I went with my wife, Karen. When we visited BioWare's booth, Mr. Epler stood in proximity. The layout in the room behind him seemed to form a halo around his head. It seemed as though, radiating from him, was a light so intense one felt as though they would be blinded. Yet, one could not look away.

He said something to me. To this day, I have been unable to decipher it. It seemed to have a quality more gorgeous than any piece of music ever composed. It bypassed the ears and given an audience with the soul itself.

I can scarcely remember what it sounded like, or if it could even be called a sound at all. I simply remember the sensations that went along with it. Fear, suffering, and all other emotion became irrelevent. You were no longer a human, but a vast collective of quarks, atoms, and molecules vibrating to the Song. Death meant nothing, as this state was above life. Time meant nothing, because all future and past became visible for what it was. In that moment, I understood. I was and was not all at once.

I slowly became aware of my surroundings when the tones died down. It took me a full ten minutes to remember who I was, or even what I was. Gradually, I realized I was crying in the middle of the convention center. I looked to my wife, and so was she. Weakly, she held up her hands and signed that she had heard.

She has been deaf all her life.

Now, my wife and I had been looking to adopt, as medical problems had prevented her from bearing children. But a day later, the test came up positive. My wife is now five months pregnant. It's a boy.

We're naming him John.

What have your encounters with Mr. Epler been like?

Why do I get the feeling you have a John Epler shrine in your house? Are these scented candles?
I certainly appreciate the moderators and developers who respond to the feedback and keep the social network alive... but this is a little creepy, man :P

You obviously have not met the man. If he can be called a man, at this point. He is at least a man, but probably far more...

Only in my dreams do I dare picture myself as one day becoming a fractured simulacrum of the wonder he encompasses.

I know how you feel. I once met George Lucas in the super market a couple years ago and what he had to say was like a holy grail of wisdom and yet it was said in just a few words.

So let me get this straight: are you saying that John Epler got your wife pregnant? That any woman within a certain radius of the man runs the risk of being sexed up just by being in his presence? Because, you know, that is a rather cool power to have...

never met him, nor any other in game development, specifically in relation to some of my favorite games. I'm just living tooo far away from any game development center(s) or game convention happenings. However I do like his style here on the forums. :wizard:

The OP was... interesting. XD I will simply add that John Epler is indeed awesome. He is one of the most down-to-earth BioWare employees here. I would say he is even more sociable than Stanley Woo. (Mind, I think Stanley gets a bad rap due to his role as moderator. He is much more pleasant than most people often get to see, sadly. But I digress...)

I often reply to John's status updates, and on occasion, one of his forum posts. We share similar tastes in games, and he is the only other fan of Angel here I can share references with. ;) He is also helpful, and interested in what we think about his work. Curiously iffy OP aside, I felt a need to share my appreciation... in a hopefully less bizarre manner. :P

All joking and OP devotion aside -- nothing wrong with that! -- John Epler really seems like an awesome dev and a very nice person. At least as much as I can tell from his SU. :)

The OP kinda scares me a little bit but Mr.Epler deserves some credit for not losing his rag under heavy pressure from some posters who just want to push and push their luck.

Yeah, he probably does. I made a few jokes about Mr. Woo in other forums, but he seems like a pretty nice guy in this one. I feel kinda guilty. Maybe a "Stanley Woo Apology Thread" should be next.

Eplre rocks.
Woo and Darth Gaider can also rock when you aren't spitting vitriol at them. I mean there's criticism and then there's insults. Whether true or not, constant insults are of course going to get you nothing but the worst of the other person in response.

Anything to spread the Epler gospel.

Wait... you've read this more than you've been piledriven into the ground? If you are piledriven that often, I suggest you seek a less hazardous line of work.
Or maybe this has damaged your brain more than being piledriven into the ground? Either way, it seems like some brain damage was required to create so confusing a statement.
I think I've damaged my brain attempting to figure out the meaning of this statement. :(

Lulz used to be a hand to hand instructor with the art of Ninpo, I'm no Bruce Lee though, so not one of those I'LL BEAT UP ALL YOUR DADS! Internet tough guy trolls(though if your dad is a cripple that will make it all the more easy << >>), hell I'ld say I'm average for the most, good in some area's, bad in others still. But didn't pay well at all >.>, before that I did a bit of backyard wrestling, when you live in a rural area, not much else to do, for fun at least, well minus fire. So yeah I've been droped on my ass or my head a few times.

The point I was making that I found all of this to be so stupid, it rubbed off on me, more so than any acts of physical trauma. Hero worship is never healthy. And while we talk about various brain damages, I'ld say you might need to get yourself looked at, as no matter how many times I've been thumped, or thumped someone else, I never once blacked out and heard voices.

That or if you really think what you say, than I have an equally insane counter, John Epler is obviously a wizard and he's attempting to steal your soul, and thus you should deal with him as one should with any wizard.

Arby n' the Chief reference? If so, you win everything.

Also...OP, you seem to like Mr. Elper, quite a bit.

But hey, everyone has an idol.

Mine is Charlie Sheen.
