Missin' the old Anders.  A couple banters from Awakening are more interesting now.

Kinda this one:

Anders: Why do spirits seek out mages?  I've always wondered.
Justice: You speak of demons.  I am not a demon.
Anders: Aren't demons simply spirits with unique and sparkling personalities?
Justice: They have been perverted by their desires.
Anders: But what do they want from mages?
Justice: Perhaps they wish the same as I: silence!

And definitely this one:

Justice: I understand that you... struggle against your oppression, mage.
Anders: I avoid my oppression.  That's not quite the same thing, is it?
Justice: Why do you not strike a blow against your oppressors?  Ensure they can do this to no one else?
Anders: Because it sounds difficult?
Justice: Apathy is a weakness.
Anders: So is death.  I'm just sayin'...

I know. I'd replayed Awakening right before playing DA2, so those conversations were fresh in my mind. They were amusing at the time, mostly because of Anders' humor. Now they're largely depressing. We can see the seeds of his future madness in them. Poor Anders.

It's also worth looking at DA2's banters. Anders and Bela have a good one too (paraphrased from memory):

Isabela: So if you had to kill hundreds of innocent people to win freedom for the mages, would they deserve justice too?
Anders: ...yes.

Bela walked out on me during my first playthrough. This dialogue crops up in Act 3. I heard it recently, and knowing the ending, it definitely chilled and saddened me. Man I love the tragedy of this game!

Another bit of dialogue from Awakening that's bit of a funny aneurysm moment now comes from one of Anders and Velanna's banters. At the end of the conversation, Anders says, "You know that chip on your shoulder? I think it has replaced your head."

After the end of DAII? Ya don't say, Anders....

Even when you first meet him in Kirkwall, I feel like he's not Anders. He's just completely serious the entire game through. Not one hint of trying to lighten the mood. Major disappointment. Far as I'm concerned, that's not Anders. That's Vengeance.

I think that was the point. He's supposed to show the players how possession can destroy who that mage was as a person before

That's really depressing - they both should have known better. I miss the old Anders too. When I first read the rumors that he would be in this game, I was excited. Not so much anymore.

I missed that.  I kept 'Bela in the stable for the first play.  But since I'm a snarky rogue this time, I'll bring her out for some sunshine.

I like the new actor's voice, but I thought it would have been sweet fun if Anders were exorcised in the late game and, right there, got his old voice and wit back.

There were a few glimmers of Anders here and there.  "It sounds like the Ferelden Circle of Mages was more fun.  Everyone was kissing everyone... at least until the abominations came along."

In the romance, Anders says that Justice doesn't like Anders's obsession with Hawke, saying it's too distracting, and Anders is happy to disagree.  But he's still pretty serious, unless you ask if he wants a sandwich. Posted Image

Am I the only one who saw what DA2 Anders became and -then- went back to play Awakening for the first time just to see Anders there?

It's the most heartbreaking thing in the world, knowing how he'll end up.

There's also some dialogue between Nate and Justice in which Nate suggestes him to posses some living body. I can't remember the exact words, I was playing Awakening while waiting the release day of DA2 and when I heard that I thought "Thank you Nate, it's all your fault!" :D

That would be sad. I actually had a hankering to hear the old voice real quick, and that's how I bumped into the two banters above on YouTube. It was probably more poignant to hear them because they were just funny at the time.

Same here: excitement >> sadness. Thank goodness for Sebastion.

Edit: And, yes, I ALSO went back to Awakening to remind myself of why I was excited to see Anders, not the Justice puppet he turned into.

Can we have an Anders DLC? All the boys got Morrigan and Leliana last go 'round...just sayin'

I really liked how if you bring Anders with you to the Fade he ceases to be Anders completely and is only Justice/Vengeance.

Dragon Age 2: Fugitive!

Diplomatically network Kirkwall's surviving mages together: resolving disputes between apostates and Circle mages, handling templars who want to join because they had joined mages to overthrow Meredith, and fending off oodles of improbably-sized spiders.

Maybe you search for Flemeth to try to enlist her aide... or at least to hear eight or ten new cryptic lines.

justice is more or less the same as in awakoning when you go in to the fade, i think vengeance is not as it seem's. a 3rd personality made from the worst elements of both of them.

I disagree that Anders was completely humor free in DA2. His banter with Sebastian about Andraste's face on the archer's crotch was priceless. He gets a few others if you bring him to the right conversations, too. Especially earlier in the game. But he is changed. He even admits as much to Merrill, where he compares being possessed to watching behind his eyes as someone else controls him. He's not always behind the wheel for all his dialogue and it definitely takes its toll. But a spark of his old personality remains. Which just makes it all the more tragic when he finally loses the fight to Justice in the third act.

I found another, along the same lines :

Justice: I believe you have a responsibility to your fellow mages.
Anders: That bit of self righteousness is directed at me?
Justice: You have seen oppression, and are now free. You must act to free those that remain oppressed.
Anders: Or I could mind my business in case the chantry comes knocking.
Justice: But this is not right. You have an obligation.
Anders: Yes, well, welcome to the world, Spirit.

And sort of this one - in a way. It's the way Justice says that last line that gets me:

Anders: I apologize Justice. I didn't mean to suggest you will become a demon.
Justice: I should certainly hope not.
Anders: I just wondered what realtionship there was between spirits and demons. Demons are a worry to any mage.
Justice: I do not know what makes demons as they are. Such evil angers me, but I do not understand it.
Anders: Well I hope you never come to understand.
Justice: I as well mage. More than you could possibly know.

That's what I'm doing now.  When I ran into him the first time and he said something about BIff going down with a gurgle, I got very sad.  Better a bang than a gurgle, I suppose.

tbh I don't know if I can play awakening again now. DA2 was a great game and I loved  it, the Anders thing was a great jaw dropping plot moment, but was depressing beyond belief and has kinda ruined Anders and makes Awakening just too upsetting to play, knowing what was going to happen.
Justice should have known better... Yes Anders anger is what corrupted him, but he knows about emotion from what he felt in Kristoff's corpse. He knows Anders is angry, he knows how demons are ruled by strong emotions and desires.... what the heck did he expect? He was already enjoying the mortal world and wanted to stay, I think he saw Anders as his meal ticket, while convincing himself it was in the name of Justice.

and if I ever got the chance to hunt him down and kill is glowy blue spirit ass I would....

So is like, half of Varric and Anders diologue.

"I'm writing a story about a brave apostate fighting against something he can't hope to beat"
"he can't hope to beat?"
"it's not a good story if the hero doesn't die"

and there was another one

"You need a new job blondie"
"why?"
"seems like rebel mage doesn't have much of a future...or a retirement plan"

Anders wasn't bad at first but then I really wanted to drop him at the end. I couldn't since he was the best healer but he made me so mad in this game. Then he goes on about how great a friend I was for allowing him to stay. I really wanted Hawke to throttle him/Justive/Vengance!

Kudos to the writers; this game definitely made me feel. A lot of "Oh my God, that did not just happen." moments.
