In my first playthrough, I was flirting with Fenris and Anders, but not either of the ladies.  At some point in Act 2, I think, Merril wound up at my estate where the entire conversation was defining our relationship.

Is she the only one who will do this or would one of guys do it as well if I hadn't flirted with them before-hand?

They aren't supposed to do it at all if they aren't in a romance. I haven't had any issues of ninjamancing yet in my playthroughs (Triggered Sebastian in Act 3 my first game, Fenris in my second game).

I've yet to encounter ninjamancing as well. I flirted once with Isabela and soon found her at my house, but that's about it. In other words, I brought it on myself.

I gained 15 rivalry with Anders when I told him to keep it professional. Yet Sebastian showed up at my house the second I flirted with him. XD Used and excuse to compliment Hawke's mabari :D

I didn't even bother flirting with any one else, because when my man!Hawke flirted with Aveline, it flew right over her head.

Lol, that's not a romance scene. All the companions will interact with your mabari,

Merill didn't come over in ninja-mode... she just showed up to talk but the entire talk was full of her telling me how much she liked my Hawke, with Hawke's replies being either hearts or broken hearts.

I was just kinda hoping the others would do that if you didn't flirt with them first since I'm starting another run to try the Fenris romance this time.

Fenris is tricky to romance. Be sure to get his rivalry or friendship up really high from the beginning and give him his gift (the book you get from the sack at the Elven Alienage at night in Act 2) before doing "A Bitter Pill." And during "A Bitter Pill" be sure to give the slave girl coins and let him decide how to finish the mission.

Believe it triggers off of whoever reaches 50% rivalry/friendship followed by their individual questioning beliefs quest first so in my case Isabella. Though it didn't stop me from romancing Merrill since I ended the relationship after.

Does anyone know if you can still do the Fenris romance if you flirted with Anders in Act 1, or does it not work out if you flirt with anyone else?

I started flirting with Anders in Act 1, but broke it off, when Anders told me, that he would only end up hurting me. He sounded really distressed and somehow I thought I did not want to add to his troubles.

I had not picked up Fenris at this point, though.

This did not stop me from having the romance with Fenris later.

Yes you can still romance Fenris, but if you flirted with other people the scene plays out slightly differently.

Fenris is REALLY picky.  Does anyone know what the point values are on the friendship/rivalry scale?  For instance, is it a 100-point scale, and your new companions begin at 50 (neutral)?

Thanks!  I'll keep an eye out for this during my next playthrough.  I really liked that Merill approached me, though I'd wished it had been someone else, so I'll see if I can finesse another companion to come talk to me like that next time around.  :)

You don't need to give him his gifts or give the girl coins (I made her a servant).  It really is approval based.  You can flirt with anyone in act 1, but in act 2 is when you can make a commitment to anyone, so be careful about that; once you have, I don't think you get another chance with Fenris.

I got +15 for sending the girl to my home, and then telling Fenris I gave her a job when he asked something like "I didn't know you wanted a slave."  To me, that seemed better than just giving her coin and sending her on her way.  Does anyone remember the points for just giving her gold?  I wonder if it was less, the same, or more.

Perhaps neutral.  But see, approval is based on where your approval is.  When I took her as a servant, I got nothing at all, but he was nearly full rival (I would have been annoyed if I had gotten any approval).

I tried the rivalmance with him, but it's tough.  I wasn't getting anywhere.  It seems he's perpetually my "neutral" friend.  I get +10 and -10 with him too frequently to make a difference.  Normally I wouldn't try to overthink it, and try to let a romance happen "naturally," but I think he requires a bit more calculated wooing.  He's driving me bonkers, really.

He and my mage disagreed on everything. It was a lot of fun, ticking him off all the time.  I think he's quite easy to figure out, though.  He hates mages,  thinks they should all be locked up, so if you disagree with him, you'll get many points quickly.  Even initially flirting with him, *if you're a mage*, will grant you rivalry points.  However, he also hates slavers, so while it's possible to not condone slavery and not get on his good side (bad guys normally attack you anyway even if you're not all "die slaver") but it does make it a bit more tricky if you're outspoken about that as well.

Thanks for the tip.  I don't particulary enjoy provoking my NPCs, but at this point I think he's earned it.  Posted Image
I shouldn't have gone with Anders the first playthrough.  For all his whining and "oh love, I'll break your heart" he really did throw himself at my Hawke.

Anders gets what Anders wants, to quote Ctrl-Alt-Del. Have to beat the guy off with a stick much like Leliana in DAO :3

During my Fenris rival romance playthrough (which I flirted with Anders and Isabela in as well) when he visits you in your estate at night you get into an argument and then he says, "This isn't why I came here," and starts to leave, then the romance dialogue is, "You don't have to leave Fenris," to which he replies, "I think it would be best for both of us if I did," and leaves. Then later when you come back to your estate he returns and says he's been thinking about you, and has been thinking about little else. Then he says, "Command me to go and I shall," to which you can reply "Did I say anything?" and that starts the sex scene. In videos I've seen on Youtube of the rival romance though (when they haven't flirted with anyone else and done everything perfectly) when he says "This isn't why I came here" and you pick the romance option Hawke says "So you're just going to leave?" and grabs Fenris's arm, and then he spins around and pins Hawke to the wall and then the sex scene starts.

I think you get a bigger increse if you tell her to go to your house and then tell Fenris you gave her a job and intend to pay her. As Jobs are tough to come by in KirkWall and even tougher if you are an elf. It was a +15 or a +20 I forget.
