Is this even possible? Can you start/finish any romance with a high rivalry score? And if so, is it any different from the more normal friendly romance?

For all 4 LIs, you can either friend or rival romance them. Each side has its differences(some small).

I ended with a 100% rivalry with Fenris as well as a romance so it does work. Not sure of the differences other than it must be awesome hate sex.

Isabela doesn't have a rivalmance path. You can still sleep with her, but it won't go anywhere.

Rivalmanced Merril, it worked pretty well. She understood I was all YOU CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS because I wubbed her. So we made out.
