Im at a quest to kill some ship captains, where two of them are assassins.
The problem is that if any of my teammembers are below 90% hp the assassins will instantly kill them. They also stealth to assassinate, not once in a while, but extremely frequent. In addition they also drink potions like crazy. Meaning if they are lucky theyll kill half my team in 10 seconds. Ive tried "Fishing" the group, as there are lots of normal adds aswell. Pulling them away, but in this encounter they are very clustered at the start. (Bottom of a stairwell by a ship in the docks)
Setup im using now (Cant change anymore, out of gold so this is final):
Hawke. Healer/slower/Brittler.
Winters grasp and cone of cold with both upgrades.
Creation: Heal+upgrade. Haste. Damage aura+upgrade.
Spirit healer: Groupheal.
Rock armor.
Varric. Ranged damage/Brittle crusher.
Archery tree
Bianca tree
Fenris. 2HTank/damage, Brittle crusher, staggerer.
Taunt.
Rush + mighty
Vanguard damage sustain (Dont have cleave yet)
His special tree +20% defense/crit.
Merril. CC/Disabler/Stagger crusher
Enthrophy tree
Rock armor
Chain lightning
Any help welcome.

Ive spent a fortune on respecs by using black emporium. Ive tried different partymembers and combos/builds for the last 2 hours, but i cant find ANYTHING that works. My gear and runes are decently upgraded.(Level 9, act 1. Doing the last few sidequests now)

Mage's ability Barrier lasts for 6 sec
Warrior's ability Stonewall lasts for 5 sec
The best thing you can do is to focus fire on single assassins and knock them down before they can enter stealth. However if one has already entered stealth you need to move your party away to a place where you can keep running for a few seconds without being trapped and leave your tank or a bait a bit behind and shield them with one of the mentioned abilities after 3-4 seconds. It works best if you can do this in a choke-point where your tank can block the path.
If you don't want to move your entire party a mage can bubble himself and a rogue can enter stealth himself.

I haven't tried this tactic yet, but could you create a Ring of Paralysis/Repulsion and stand inside?

Then you just have to deal with the last one, and one isn't even a problem.

You need more damage and less healing/situational buffs. Assassins are also a hell of a lot easier if you're using Aveline with Improved Shield bash and have two Mages with Chain Reaction. My Mage just goes Force first to get Gravitic (if you have not used this ability yet, you need to check it out). You can actually target an elite or "boss" with it and what happens is, they are already in the center so they can't move at all. If you cast it on an Assassin before they stealth, they are stuck for 20 seconds.
Aveline can also Shield Bash them, even though she probably won't be able to attack either. I pretty much own solo Assassins all day, but when they are mixed in with a huge swarm, it's time to drop double Tempests + Gravitic, Shield Bash > Chain Lightning and then run when you see stealth. You can also interrupt their stealth with the Fist of the Maker as well as Telekinetic Blast. You also only ever need the 80% heal, so Spirit Healer is mostly unnecessary.
Also, for stagger madness, Claymore + one-handed weapon = everything in range is staggered within 1-3 quick swings.

pretty much what he said, gravatic ring is the best disabling spell in the game it renders assassins useless for 20 seconds and if you want u can use pull of the abyss to pull them back in the center if they ever get far enough . then proceed to use firestorm and/or tempest and storm of arrows to make sure they never leave that area and die a painful death.

I hit a double confuse on the captains, they stabbed each other while I cleared trash, then I just focus fired 1 down while Aveline would stonewall soak or heal carver.

Pummel Strike upgraded has a highc hance of it, Aveline's upgraded Shield blast is a 100% chance all the time, doesn't even pay attention to rank so thats a good one. Once there staggered Chain Lightning upgraded as has been stated is 600% dmg. it goes from doing a lot of dmg to nearly 1-shotting assassins. On nightmare, depending on lvl, it'll drop em to 20-30% hp from full.
Another good one is using Storm in the area, any damage has a chance to knock them out of stealth though the game sometimes ignores that, or likes to lag it a bit. That is I've hit em with damage and they pop out 2 seconds later, not immediately. Either case Storm (especially upgraded) will zap them constantly helping with knocking em out of stealth.
And finally, upgraded Paralyze Glyph is great. Keep your party back with just your warrior dealing with them (while your ranged units firing away). Once they stealth give it a count to 3 and place a Paralyzing Glyph behind your Tank. I'd keep the party on hold and if you have any other melees (like say, Isabela) keep her by the ranged units till the things stunned. If it goes into stealth and shes there, high chance she'll be 1 shotted.
Assassins are, ultimately something that even if you have the perfect strategy for things can go horribly wrong. I often kill them off very quickly and then, at other times, the ****ers just don't seem to die. They stealth to often and chug potions constantly, so, sometimes it can just be luck of the draw. Definitely save often.
-edit-
Oh and one more fun thing about Aveline, can't really do it as early as 9 but, she has a passive for 15% damage resist. Now, combine that with the 5% in Defender tree, 25% from her WnS sustained. I have her tactics setup to use the sustained at 25% hp, basically puts her to 45% Damage Resist.
Reason im pointing this out is, Stonewall has an ugprade to make said person immune, with how shes setup like this you can forego that upgrade all together. Any source of damage resist (found often enough on misc items) and a normal stonewall with all that is 95% + items. Or the sustained Battle Synergy, 3% per combanion. Or her own specialization, 2% per hit on her. Add that into the mix and she can easily max out using stonewall with out the upgrade.
Hell with out using stonewall she can be around 60% which is a pretty big help overall. generally I'd ignore cunning on her aes a tank and just focus on str/con. 30-40 str is enough, rest into constitution for as high of an HP pool as you can muster. Let armor and damage resist carry her the rest of the way to tank-goddesshood.
