<spoiler>

...when you duel the arishock, how the hell can this be won without turning down the difficulty?  I'm playing on nightmare and I've kited him (very #%@^& boring btw) for a half hour and after his 3rd potion drink, I'm about to put it on casual.

This is my first time playing so I'd appreciate it if NO SPOILERS made it into this thread.  I can't be the only one in this position.  I do have the potion that can rearrange my specs if a certain spell is essential.  My Hawke is a bloodmage who has the following offensive spells:

Winter's Grasp
Cone of Cold
Spirit bolt (upgraded)
Stonefist
Hemmorage
Blood Slave
Virulent walking bomb (uprgraded)
Lightning Bolt (upgraded)

I do have a good cold staff and I can kite him forever but the game seems programmed to have him drink a potion when he gets down to 40% health or so.  I do no if it's nightmare or just mage mechanics, but if any of his attacks hit = game over because mage Hawke goes flying.

You don't *have* to duel the Arishok 1 on 1. If you're a mage you'll probably want to just duke it out group vs group, because then you can bring a tank to keep him busy, clean up his buddies, and then give him a good 4 v 1 kick to the teeth. Or horns.

casual wont make your spells cast faster.
stats:
willpower for gear requirement
magic the rest
if you get hit you die anyway, so dont get hit.
spells:
horror upgraded
hex upgraded
crushing prison upgraded
wintersgrasp upgraded
Cone upgraded
Stone armor
stonefist
petrify upgraded
spirit strike upgraded
walking bomb
take spirit healer for 25 mana

kite him till 50% or so you have all your cool downs ready.
next time he charges;
horror, hex, winters, coc, prison, if resisted petrify, if not walking bomb, spirit strike, then petrify, move away and auto attack 3 x not 4, he will be on you or charging and the 4th attack takes too long. He only drank twice when I did this.
after that its first come first served on horror, winters, let loose at every chance.

I drank the life ward potions, made sure I had heals, and used crushing prison, cone of cold, winter's grasp, walking bomb, and... I think spammed the a button on my controller for the rest of the time. Oh, and I mindblasted him at every opportunity and ran around the rest of the time. And I had no spells upgraded. I did switch out some gear to give me health bonuses- if you're playing a mage, I recommend keeping a few amulets and rings with health bonuses to switch out as necessary.

Took a really long time, but it was actually better than the free for all I had my first play through. I died over ten times because my group kept spreading out and I hadn't paid enough attention to Aveline's aggro abilities.

it took a long time because you cared about health.

It took a long time because I'm a glass cannon. I would have died more than once if not for the life ward potion. I wasn't at that high of a level when I fought him.

Rather you got hit in the first place. Simply run around, he doesn't hit you while chasing you. Dodge out of the way of his charge, then nuke him  when he goes past. When he returns to chasing you, run again.

So no need for life ward potions etc, just boring kite-fest.

I did run around. Sometimes I didn't move fast enough, sometimes... well, I didn't move the way I pressed the controller. I've had some odd things happen in game with character movement- might be just an xbox 360 thing, though.

I have no idea about the movement on Xbox or PS3 for that matter as I play the game on PC, so can not comment on that really.

But atleast you managed to take him down ^.^

Personally I am just dropping the difficulty for him whenever I do him again, or just clear the room itself. The kiting is not difficult, it's just long and boring.

This might have worked.  I really wanted to duel him bc/ that's something my Hawke would have done but I just didn't feel like respecing my character and kiting him forever for that combo.  So, I just fought them all with my group.

How have you managed to use walking bomb?  On anything but nightmare, I'd say it's the best spell in the game considering how enemies bunch up and have > 1000 hit points.  The only way I've been able to make it work without more micromanagement than it is worth is to have Isabella stun a clump w/ her *all hands on board* talent which keeps them stunned long enough.

I do agree as a mage if you get hit and there's no way to stop getting flung around like a rag doll, you're dead.  I do think it's not a bad idea to put a point every 3 levels or so in con so if an assassin stabs you from behind, you don't die.

I found that upgraded horror stops him long enough to put some hurting in with other spells, and tossing winter grasp just as it about to wear off and fiering another before kiting him did the trick. Not the epic duel but eh... whatever works works.

Without Horror I found that it's pretty hard to find the time to get a spell off at him, due to the buggy animations in this game (sometimes you can break off right after the projectile fires from your staff, other times it makes the entire animation play before you regain movement). I played a dangerous game, kiting close enough to initiate an attack on his part, then dodging out of it's range and firing off a prison or spirit blast (waiting for the charge took too long for my liking). If you get the timing right, you can easily dodge his attacks while keeping some consistent fire on him. The only issue is that incredibly annoying instant-hit stab he randomly throws out (where he impales you into the air for three seconds), which isn't a problem in itself (it does do heavy damage) but the knockdown afterwards gives him time to throw another attack at you, which is more often your death sentence if you had been already damaged before the impale.

Other than that it's mainly a grinding game while you try to drain him of all his potions, and eventually his health.

I just used the columns in the room and my Hawke's primary specialization is Force Mage. Throwing down the spell that slows time for enemies means easy nukes from fire attacks and cone of cold goes through the column. Use the level geometry...it is your friend.

put one point into horror, run around the pillar until it recharges. profit.

After the first playthrough on hardcore, i realised there is actually no differences in stratage/tatics in different difficulties. Only things that change with the difficulties are the enemy hp and dmg, which is really boring and stupid features by desgin.

Higher difficultis only force ppl to concentrate more so they dont get hit, usually 1 hit = death, and every boss fight is basically doing the exactly the same thing as you do in lower difficutlies except you have to execute the stratagy w/o any making slightest mistake for a whole  30 min.

This set up is dual oriented.

Walking bomb early and just use it as a high powered spirit DoT.  In general use, I use Pull of the Abyss and Gravatonic to lock down, upgraded sleep works as well I guess.  Walking bomb a minor grunt, focus fire.

I dueled the Arishok, alone, as a mage. It took some time, but my strategy was this:
- Petrify him in place and blast him with attacks/spells until he was free.
- Used Gravitic Ring as a Force Mage to make him immobile (targets in the very center of the spell don't seem to move) and blasted him with attacks/spells.

If both Gravitic Ring and Petrify were waiting to finish their cooldowns, I ran in a large circle around the two pillars in the room. Also, when he tried the mad dash run against me, I always put a pillar between us so he ran into that. It gave me a few seconds for spells.

Edit: I only had spells available from the Force Mage and Primal trees, so "blasting him with spells" meant chain lightning, lightning storm, stonefist, and that attack from the Force Mage tree (the other two being more of pull-push spells that didn't work out as well).
