I'm new here and trying to find a good way to use merrill as a blood mage. I just re-spec-ed her with all primal abilities and death syphon/vortex, spirit bolt/strike (just so i could unlock the death syphon spells), and blood of the first, (deep) wounds of the past, wrath of the elven (with both upgrades). I plan to tank her using Wrath of the elven/blood of the first/death vortex/rock armor all active at same time (adds up to 100% of my mana exactly). Im trying to find a good attribute spred for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Death syphon/vortex is wasted on Merrill, won't heal her while blood of the first is activated. Since ur going to tank her, sustain wise go with rock armor (10%), arcane shield (20%), wrath of the elvhen (20%), and blood of the first (50%).

For offense the primal tree is a good choice, and her specialized trees is a must. Elemental works well too, cone of cold is always nice and fire storm is quite effective. Also witer graphs freeze upgrade is pretty handy. Id advise to just avoid the spirit tree altogether for a companion. Spirit bolt is a great cheap spell, but ur companions can't really use walking bomb properly. Plus Death syphon/vortex is just a wast of 30% of mana.

Stat wise just focused on Magic and Con, and try to pick up blood/mana point ratio accessories and staffs to equip her with.

death syphon only uses 20%. but arcane shield is a much better choice. with the upgrade that spreads it to your party members. thanks. and i have a ring, necklace, and staff that add more mana per each point of health. do you know where i can get more?

Well then its a waste of 20% ;). Not even sure why they put it in now that sustainables take up % now, and death vortex don't do crap for a Blood Mages

And more blood/mana ratio accessories will pop up at vendors as u go on. The shops in low town i think mostly. Im pretty sure i got 2 rings, a necklace, and a staff over the course of act 1-2 at those vendors. Also her friendship bonus will add an extra mana per health.

I found another ring in lowtown. so i think im up to a 5:1 ratio. I think my biggest problem is the tactics though. i have her set to Self any for the sustained spells but i don't know how to set up her attacks. :(

Tactics is something u'll get better at as u go. I think i used some thing like,

Self any, activate rock armor
Self any, activate arcane shield
Self any, activate wrath of the elvhen
Self any, activate blood of the first
Self health < 10 %, deactivate blood of the first (so i could heal her)
Self surrounded by at least 2 enemies, use mind blast
Self surrounded by at least 3 enemies, use ensnare
2 enemies clustered, use Chain Lightning.
3 enemies clustered, use Wounds of the Past.
4 enemies clustered, use Tempest.
Enemy health < 50%, use Stonefist.
Enemy staggered, use Chain Lightning.
Enemy disoriented, use Stonefist.
Enemy rank elite or higher, use crushing prison
Party member health < 25%, use barrier.

Work off the damager or AOE preset tactic, and go from there.

Above that bolded tactic, you should put a tactic that is "enemy: staggered, then use next tactic"  That way crushing prison gets its full damage off. :)  That is of course if you have a good source of staggering in your group.
