No one appears to have mentioned what I assumed was her reasoning: she considers Merrill to be a part of the clan, whether Merrill or anyone else does or not.

Irrelevant. She placed her affection for one woman above her responsibility to dozens of others.
Marethari was a bad Keeper.

Caridin built his Golems for the first Blight. The Shaper's Memories extended to the first thaig and the codex for the thaig at the end of act 1 said that some dwarfs have found thaigs older than the Memories and brought back items as proof. The person who wrote the codex said that it was troubling.
So that thaig shouldn't have had Golems in it.
I had wondered if our take-home message was that Caridin had acquired the tech archaeologically, rather than single-handedly starting it from scratch. It had always bothered me that he came up with the Anvil single-handedly, even though no one else could. OTOH, it would raise the question why he doesn't tell the Warden when he kills himself (although maybe he's just trying to hide the source of his knowledge to prevent its duplication), so another possible explanation would be the knowledge was lost with the old thaig and Caridin simply made the same innovation independently, later on.

I think whether the Keeper did the right thing depends on whether she had cultivated a new First yet or not. The Dalish have many mages, and she had six years, which might be enough to impart the lore (or at least the knowledge on how to re-acquire the lore) to a Dale who already knew magic. If she decided basically kill herself knowing both that, excepting Merill, the lore would die with her and that her Clan would not accept Merill even if Merill had all the lore of the Keeper, it was a really misguided move imo.
