I just took Varric along, though of swapping him but just kept him for my mage,

Why can Isabella do well as a party member?

Isabella is simply a nuke/mini-tank character. She is there for high damage, and built properly can be an off tank who takes the pressure off the main tank. Her abilities in the swashbuckler tree attest to this.

I'm curious about this too. I have yet to find a really cohesive playstyle that works with Isabela where she doesn't require constant babysitting (if I wanted to do that I would have picked a rogue). Finding a sweet spot of stats, talents, and tactics where she's useful but not getting herself killed constantly... has been a challange.

Isabella works really well as single enemy dps/mini-tank character for me, with some added crowd control benefits. Ripping up enemies from behind and such.

If Isabella is getting killed so much, then your tank and healers are not doing their jobs. Give isabella some of the aggo reducing abilities in the rogue tree. Armistice is one example to use on your tank.

Only use her if u go Rival - as of the moment, there is a bug with her when she's Friendly - see http://social.biowar...5/index/6575152.

I find this is a PC exclusive problem though so don't worry if your playing on a console about this.

Make sure for her to have in her tatics to attack whoever your tanks target is as she will kill them fast and your tank should still be keeping the aggro. If she is surronded by enemys a tatic for going stealth or evade.

The aforementioned bug also does not seem to affect everyone, for I played the game through with Isabela constantly in my party and did not get the bug (playing on PC, not console).

About building her, it will depend largely on the rest of your party to be honest. If you play the traditional setup and thus have a healer, she can be very good at peeling things off your healer, or other mages for that matter with tactics set so she uses Across the Bow on anyone attacking your squishy.

Her personal talent tree turns her into a rather effective secondary tank, if you need it.

She also has access to Scoundrel tree which has all sorts of neat things to make sure everyone of the monsters stays on the tank (Armistice and Goad, note that I am hearing these abilities do not work on console).

Dual Weapon is the obvious damage increase tree while Subterfuge provides some more means for her to survive (I personally used Stealth and Evasion quite a bit). Sabotage tree on the other hand provides some crowd control means, namely the Overpowering Fog upgrade for Fatiguing Fog so you can basically slaughter everything with upgraded Walking Bomb from your mages (careful with this on Nightmare).

I personally don't play Nightmare mode, as I prefer funky party setups instead of being forced to bring certain companions simply to overcome situations, the heal-bot a good example. So keep that in mind from my advice, as Isabela will likely not be able to tank very well on Nightmare.

I used Isabela primarily for All Hands on Deck (upgraded for AOE stun) and Fatiguing Fog (AOE disorient to class combo with Scatter from my DPS SnS), she's also good for consistent DPS behind elites provided you can hold aggro or drop it off of her.

Well, it seems that we might as well discuss what sort of party make-up would best suit Isabella. I'm assuming that Fenris or a PC 2h dps tank would suit her specialization the best ... and why use her if not to make some use of her specialization?

In the endgame, I controlled Isabela the whole time. She was outdamaging my upgraded Fenris, Aveline, and even my warrior (sword and shield) Hawke. Get her two high-damage daggers with runes, adn she can drop enemies like flies.

And she's hot, too. Posted Image

Party situation that is good for her?  You need at least one tank with the taunt skill, and Anders with his specialized healing tree worked out.  She is high maintenance, healing wise, but if you use her stealth right and raise her cunning, she won't need as much healing as you think.  Have Aveline or warrior Hawke taunt as many mobs as possible and get completely surrounded, then clear them off from behind with Isabela.

Give her 27 cunning and Thrice-Bound dagger so she can unlock any chests for you if you dont have any other rogues with you. Give Isabela Dex/Con.

My Isabela was far from useless I didn't even give her any DW skills except Unforgiving Chain until middle of Act III. Until then I went for mainly passive abilities such as sea legs, experienced hand, blindside, follow through, twist the knife and subtlety. By endgame she has immunity to crits, stuns, flanking and knockback. She had a defense of 73% vs flunkies (attack of 75% vs boss) even without Savvy activated. Critical chance was 67% and damage was 118% (which is more than twice normal damage)

Weapon 1: 25% chance to reduce attack speed, 25% chance to reduce movement speed
Weapon 2: +25% speed (lyrium rune from Varric quest)

She also has +15% speed from thumbs up and speed sustained ability. She was the main reason I beat Meredith on Hard. Everyone else including Hawke only serve as distractions :)

I tend to normally go with Varric when i want a rogue for lockpicking, assuming i am not a rogue myself, but i tend to bring the one i want to romance around with me, regardless of their class.

But i would judge Isabela as nuke/tank type rogue with alot of sex appeal.

By end game, in my party, Isabella had 106% crit chance, did something something similar in crit damage... Norms and 'Tenants had 80% chance to hit her and Bosses had 75%. Sometimes, I'd blink and she'd kill a 'Tenant... It was crazy. Not as Crazy Fenris though...

i respecced her and spent alot on her unique talents and it was an improvement , though i feel she still need babysitting and is far more likely to die than anyone else.

Get the upgrades in her unique talent tree and she becomes a dodge thank with Savvy. I've seen her constantly dodge assassin's backstabs.

As for mirco, if your on hard you should be mircoing your whole party all the time and have well set up tactics. Its what hard is designed to require.
