I've been playing on normal, experimenting and tweaking for my nightmare play through. On normal I don't really need a stereotypical tank. My party makeup is usually Merril, Varric, Anders, and 2h warrior Hawke. Has anyone tried 2h tanking in Hard or Nightmare?
2h warrior tank viable in higher difficulty modes?

Yep. 2h warrior tanks are much better than sword and board tanks, especially on Nightmare. They can take damage very well, dish out a ton with multiple AoE stuns/knockbacks, free AoE cleave, and just the raw damage from their skills. Not to mention the health and armor/defense bonuses that frequently appear on str/con gear. You can build them so many different ways.
My personal preference is 2 pt in str 1 pt in con every level until I get about 25 con, then go all in str until I need some in con for better gear.
Run 2h warrior tank and 3 ranged on Nightmare, cant lose.

Nerfs? Not very likely as this is a single player game. If it were an MMO or had online play then I'd agree. Mages from Origins and spirit warriors from Awakening are still overpowered and have been for ages. If they didn't nerf them, why would they start nerfing in DA2?bayes1881 wrote...

Sorta sucks though, I'd like some proper on-the-ball balancing of Bioware games post-release

Try a near pure Reaver build with heavy investments in Vanguard and 2H trees; this is the most overpowered build in the game, even on nightmare and it is argueably the best tank because the lower your health, the greater the damage output; at very low health in conjunction with sacrificial frenzy you are looking at a potential 400% damage increase; then there is fervor 30% attack speed increase. Kind of boring though, just spam claymore and sacrifical frenzy over and over, when you hit 10% have Anders tactics heal you....not only a great tank but mobs and even minor elites go down in seconds.
