Yes, you have to choose the third option, to assume responsibility.
I also did this, after murdering them in my first playthrough....

I actually did not know that. I wish I had known.
I was going to say that the whole thing felt way too dark it became ridiculous (didn't know we could avoid it). And I don't know if it's a bug, but after I slaughtered the entire clan, Merrill said nothing. And because I flirted a bit, the romance activated and she came by and said that she wants to snuggle but is afraid what her clan might think....
Yea, I am sure the clan would feel pretty bad about you sleeping wih the person who killed them all.

No way bro, really? I'm pretty sure Avatar spawned every fantasy setting there is.

A better option might be to refuse to give Merrill the tool to work on the mirrior. I don't know if she finds a way to get around that, but I know I wouldn't let her keep going with her blood magic again. I'd rather have the keeper alive and Merrill pissed off. Of course, that would leave me as the only mage in the final battle....
Merrill will stick by you if you have her at 100% rivalry.

I tried that on my last play through, she was on the rivalry path from the get go. Still got the quest later about going back to Sundermount, still ended up murdering her whole clan. I'm going to try the "assume responsibility" option next time.

I'm petty sure the third option reads "It was my fault". Not exactly letting you know how that's going to play out.

In reality its not clear how things will play out as well.

Well, exactly.
But IIFC, the three options are:
"Merrill killed her"
"Marathuri attacked us"
"It was my fault"
(Yes, those are based on memory and likely not exact. I think they're reasonably accurate in concept, though).
Now, 1 and 2 lead to the Elves attacking you, yet are essentially accurate descriptions of what happened. Number 3 does not at all explain what happened - IMO, it was not at ALL Hawke's fault - and leads to the elves letting you go.
While you don't know the elves will attack the first time you choose 1 or 2, I really don't see how choosing 3 makes much sense in response to a question about what happened to Marathuri.

The third option is misleading though. The paraphrase is actually more like "I'll take responsibility," which most would probably interpret as "I'll take responsibility for what happened," but what it actually meant to convey was "I'll take responsibility for Merrill and make sure she never does any stupid **** like this again."

True on all counts. And is why I think the dialogue wheel is seriously lacking in games.
