Is it necessary to keep someone you're interested in romancing in the party all the time? Or can you do it without them being in the party at all?

Its tough to romance someone without ever including them because you can gain a LOT of friendship/rivalry points through quest conversations... but no, you don't have to keep them around all the time. In fact, once you've maxed their friend/rival bar you really don't need to include them ever again
