Probably Anders.

I still accept Loghain's betrayal however, there was no hope, too many darkspawn and no more hope.

Anders just went all terrorism. <=WHAT

Loghain and Anders both 'betrayed' the protagonist (among others) because they thought it would be the right thing to do. So basically they are both traitors with good intentions. Or argueably traitors with less than good intentiones. Whatever. The discussion has already begun though Anders threads shoot everywhere out of the ground and grow quickly.

Yes, but in a way, what Lohgain did had reasoning behind it because there was too much Darkspawn.

That's why this will be discussed for years to come.

Arguably Anders did the only thing that could ever spark the mage uprise. And arguably the battle at Ostagar could have been won if Loghain didn't pull out. We will probably never know 'what happened if'. So there is no end of this argument.

Merril didnt blow up a chantry sparking the first world war of Thedas.

Indeed.

Merrill became obsessed with a mirror. It probably would have been better if she'd never thought about it, never talked to the demon, and never learned blood magic.

Maybe.

I don't think the Dalish will survive on the path they're taking. Humans and qunari will continue to expand and take up more land. Their armies and nations will get bigger and stronger while the Dalish dwindle and there are fewer places for them to hide.

If they stand and fight, they die. If they continue to wander, they die.

I don't blame Merrill for delving into the elven past. The future sucks and she's probably wise enough to realize it. I think she's looking for a miracle. Something that can help the Dalish survive and prosper instead of plodding onto oblivion.

It's easy to see how horribly things turn out and say she was stupid for even trying.

However, we haven't seen the end.

It reminds me of the Anvil of the Void. Branka was a horrible person, but the result of her actions might be the salvation of the dwarves.

What Anders did was wrong. It was pretty horrible. But what if the war between the mages, templars, and chantry actually turns out to be a good thing?

What Merrill did was wrong. But it meant she met the Champion of Kirkwall. It gave her the type of power and experience most Firsts never get. What if in the coming chaos, she's able to find that miracle/opportunity and help her people?

In the long run, it's possible these horrible events lead to good things.

We haven't finished the story.

This. There's already an example in Origins (Harrowmont v Bhelen) that has the more peace loving and 'good' choice actually making things worse in the long run. It will be interesting to see what DA3 makes of these events.

Regardless, Anders I think, in answer to the OP. Just because the Terrorist v Freedom Fighter debate will never go away.

Orwell said something to the effect of who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past. Whether Anders is the Freedom Fighter or the Terrorist will depend on who wins the war and who's telling the story.....

Had Crazy Horse won the war on the Plains, the battle would have been know as the Battle of the Greasy Grass, not the Little Big Horn. The winner gets to tell the tale and define the terms. The winner controls the present who defines the past, and sets the society on the path for the future.

In response to the question; however, Merril's story affects few (her clan, her friends, herself) at this point. Anders' story affects the entire world. Anders has my vote.

dose anders always blow up the chantry though could you play through it with out doing that

Always happens.

He's such a naughty little brooding Angel*

*referance to the Dev comment about Anders adding a Buffy x Angel style romance to Bioware games

 really? Buffy x Angel Style? Hm actually I see the likeness there... He's selfish and self-serving like Angel (although loves Hawke ok ), loses himself to Vengeance (Angel losing soul) and you can kill him in the end haha. (and that possibly could mean he'll be back from the dead too if you kill him)

But then... is there a chance next game I can get Spike lol?

Anders probably, from what I've seen on these forums.

Never liked Loghain. He's just a man suffering from paranoia.
