I figured it was because the relay was unstable

just stumbled on this thread. if bw deigned the relay to be red simply as a warning, i think that was a horrible design choice. to me, if its different than the others, its because the reapers designed it that way for some reason. but i dont think its because of the collectors since theyre nowhere near as old as the relays.

Actual thoughts:

From a story side, I think it's likely a function of the place it connects to. Most mass relays connect to relatively cold areas of space, but the Omega 4 connects to somewhere near the galactic center, where general space is much larger. Either the giant glowy ball reflects the heat of the destinations, or needs to be heated itself for some reason to allow that kind of penetration. (Mass relays create mass-free corridors of space, but there's much less to move in typical space than the galactic center. Maybe the core has to work harder to create that, and it works better at a higher temp, and at high temps glows red.)
