I am a fan of scheming demons, characters like Philip Traum from The Mysterious Stranger or Kil'Jaeden from Warcraft lore.  The mage in the fade, Niall I think his name was, describes demons as (sorry if I misquote this as I am going from memory) "playing their own games, in which people are pawns, maybe even bargaining chips." Yet in DA2 it seems that demons have a three step process, make a pact with a mage, become an abomination, kill innocents until a hero or templar downs you.  What are they achieving possessing someone in the first place? I was hoping Merrill's story would get into the grander roles of demons, their bargins, and their politics, but it didn't go that route. Overall I was let down by the demon theme in DA2 compared with DA:O, anyone else?

You shouldn't be.

They had the First Enchanter corrupted and it seems every damn mage in the Kirkwall Circle was a blood mage.

If a single demon convinced the First Enchanter or Quentin to do the actions that they did then that single demon helped destroy the rule of the Chantry and incite a global war.

That's if that was ever a demon's plan. They don't seem to have big over-arching plans. They like little things like making a Templar believe he's got a wife and children that love him all so they can 'experience' the mortal realm.

In which case that first demon's act may have set in motion things it could not have anticipated.

If there was such a demon....story really doesn't care for the Knight-Commander or First Enchanter and we know next to nothing about them or why they do the actions they do.

Demons are insane (in human terms) and most of them are stupid.

The desire demon in Sebastion's quest is thinking a bit more. She manages to get an entire household under her control as she feeds off one woman's ambition. The pride demon, Hybris, is more concerned with his 'shard of power' than possessing people.

Spirits, in general, are conceptual parasites who don't understand the mortal realm. Within the Fade, they do their own thing, but in the regular world, they're at a loss.

Uldred would like a word with you, Maria Caliban.

Sure his general plan was "CORRUPT EVERYONE! MUH-HAHAHAHA!" But it was more of a plan than say Kitty had.

Well, they say that demons all want to possess people and see the world through their eyes. I guess they didn't really think of what to do after that...

The people above make good points, it should also be noted that demons differ in terms of power. The more powerful the demon is, the smarter and more ambitious its goals.

I think it's safe to say most possessed mages/Abominations in DA2 were low level, able to manipulate and take over the mages because they were already of weak mind and because the veil was so thin. However alot of demons just wish to take over the human relm by any means possible, for example the demon that took over Connor, they don't really plan and think beyond that, to them destruction and murder is the best way to take over the human world.

Kitty was a moron.

A century and she couldn't figure out that puzzle? I solved it in about 10 minutes just randomly clicking on those things.

Desire spirits are supposed to be intelligent and powerful. What did she spend her time doing?

She played with a ball of yarn, of course.

It took you 10 mins?*cough* So, as I recall, it's not that Kitty couldn't figure out the puzzle, it's that she simply can't touch it. Only mortals can manipulate the device.
